Ryan Holiday and his wife Samantha opened a bookstore with their entire life savings in a 140-year-old building in a small town outside Austin. They envisioned hosting events, welcoming customers from the community, and drawing people to this beautiful street on the bluffs of the Colorado River.
But by the first week of March 2020 the world was entrenched in a pandemic. What began with such excitement found them both, for obvious reasons, standing between the empty brick walls thinking of that Arrested Development line: I’ve made a huge mistake. This video documents their journey to fulfill their lifelong dream of opening a bookstore.

Opening a bookstore in my opinion is never a mistake. Wish there were more. I much prefer going to a physical store and getting lost in the shelves for a few hours.

I agree, book stores especially small, boutique ones are special! However owning a book store as a business, where people browse shelves and maybe buy 1-2 books is a very tough business to be unless you have insanely high foot traffic. The operating costs are in the thousands of dollars each month, just think about that. They have to sell A LOT of books to cover their costs and I'm sure it will be his actual business as writer/speaker, etc. that will keep it going. I do wish them the best of luck of course, love Ryan and what he's doing!

I know you have a small selection of books, but one thing I would take into account is the schools and universities around. What are their reading lists? If you can supply your community with that it could be nice as well. Maybe when they come searching for a book they surely need, they might find one they didn't know they needed. All the best, I hope you have a lot of success through your business.

My wife and I have owned an independent bookstore since 1993. The nineties were amazing, but when the Amazon Effect kicked in, we nearly went under a couple of times. But we're still making a living. Your place looks great and so does the street you're on. Our street is doing a big block party thing end of this month, maybe stuff like that with your new neighbors would jumpstart things for all. Looks to me like you have a great start! Best of luck to you. Marcus on.

My dad was in business for decades. He was a builder but also financed. When I was working on my MBA, he loved it when I would say, "hey dad, here's a new way you've been doing it wrong all these years!" When I took a financial accounting class, in the first chapter, at least six times, it said how we needed to be using fancy calculators and spreadsheets and that the old mortgage rate books were out of style. We'd been using those books for so long that we could interpolate within a penny or two the amount of payment that fell between numbers in the book. That dead tree mortgage book boots up every time, doesn't need its screen replaced if dropped, and never needs a replacement battery. There is a texture, a smell, even sounds from paper books you don't get from glowing screens that helps with remembering the content.

Thank you so much for what you have given. 🙌🙌🙌

From the owner of 2nd Chance Books who is newly remembering how difficult it is to get off the ground and running, I may not understand your covid paranoia, but I've always enjoyed your books (starting w/ daily stoic), and if you build something that lasts and makes you happy to run, then it worked. Besides, it's easier to invest your life-savings when you still have passive royalties coming in :) Glad you took the risk.

I've only recently discovered and started listening to Ryan and to me, he's no less important than the great philosophers of the past. Keep in mind a lot of his ideas are materials taken from already established ideas but any great ideas are worth passing along; one generation to another. The common thread with great minds of past and present have always been the sharing and passing along ideas. The saying, if you don't learn from history, you're doomed to repeat it. Like in life, we make mistakes but it's what we do with that experience that matters. Learn from our mistakes; learn from our great philosophers; Ryan is passing along those ideas in a well-curated, condensed format.

Three tips: 1. "Ask" viewers to buy The Painted Porch books (e.g., Most Popular) from the website. 2. Improve lighting in the store. 3. If you end up selling coffee, then offer a free cup for first book purchased. Rooting for you both!

There was a bookstore about 15 minutes drive from me that had free coffee. I wasn't the biggest coffee drinker but it was in these small cups so it was nice to drink a little while looking around. I visited this place 1000s of times and told everyone about it. Eventually they got rid of the coffee because of stains and I must admit, it lost that magic a bit. Coffee and Books definitely go hand in hand and free coffee is genius. Also a choice of sample tea and decaf tea goes a long way as well.
@nerdmommy7114
@nerdmommy7114 2 жыл бұрын
@@CassoniCorp I too dont like coffee but I would go back to a place that had that kind of ambience and sense of community. There was a bookstore decades ago, well carpeted and it was permitted for bookshoppers to sit on the floor to read. The downside of that was they had a lot of ruined books that used to be brand new. They refused to sell it cheaper though. The bookshop eventually closed, and it was replaced by a supermarket. Ive never encountered that kind of bookshop ever again. From a business standpoint though, I wouldnt let my customers spill or worn out my inventory if theyre not even gonna buy it. So yeah, I agree with the main comment. Offer a reason for them to stay and read their first purchase!

would love to visit this book store one day! I was a philosophy major, so to me there is nothing better than a great, deep, book, and having a physical copy is a very special bonus. congratulations, looks like a total dream come true!
