My Dreamcast regret is that I waited until January 2001 to buy a Sega Sports Dreamcast, which happened to be only two weeks before Sega announced they were discontinuing it. I panicked and took it back to the retailer for a full refund (Walmart had a great refund policy back then). If I knew then what I knew now, I would've kept it and never traded it in. But I was a bit of a fanboy and wanted to back a console that was going to compete against Sony, so I eventually used my Dreamcast refund to pre-order the new console in town, Microsoft's Xbox. I don't regret buying an Xbox, because I loved that console. I just wish I had it alongside the Dreamcast. I shouldn't have traded in my Xbox either. So many regrets. lol

@@G360LIVE Trust me you never really do get over some of those missed opportunities or bad decisions. Back in the late 90s when there was still an abundance of PS1 games not to mention tons of retro stuff going for cheap I made a lot of bad decisions both selling and buying. To this day I can look back and see all the times I could have bought games that are worth literally hundreds of dollars now or sold games that are worth a small fortune now as well. However these days when I see something that I even have any inkling is going to be worth a good amount of money or just a good investment I'll either check it on my phone a little oe research and come back. Also I do frequent a lot of thrift shops as those are a straight up gold mine. (found a loose copy of jet set radio future for original Xbox for like a dollar)

First off, why didn't you set the time to check if that battery is still good or been replaced by gamestop? Secondly, controller ports break on the dreamcast because people hot swap controllers. If you have a dreamcast, for the love of god please set your controllers up completely (including vmu's and rumble paks) BEFORE turning on your dreamcast.

Yeah that was my first thought with the clock too, I bought a refurb PS2 not long ago and the battery was dead. Those batteries have around a 10 year life, so after 20 years most will probably need changing. He also talks about soldering a new battery, which in my experience is a bad idea, it's 50/50 whether you'd overheat one of those coin cells and cause them to leak. It's a far better idea to just attach a proper holder.

From what I can tell, the biggest issue with them is the optical drive. If that goes, it's going to be increasingly hard to source a replacement. But, on the brightside there are optical disc emulators out there and it's super easy to back up the discs for use, assuming the drive still works.

@Ordinary GP A lot of the PAL Dreamcast games had a 50/60Hz selector so you could run them in 60Hz mode if your TV supported it. This was on a title-by-title basis though - and there were some annoying games that obviously had 60Hz support coded in because they worked at 60Hz with the VGA box connected, but didn't give you the option when connected to a TV.
@riggles
@riggles 5 жыл бұрын
@Ordinary GP You can also mod them to play out of region games, luckily our TV's here support RGB Scart (in the US you basically have to own a PVM/BVM to get that kind of quality) so the video quality will be much better for systems in Europe with the right hookups and RGB mods if needed. All our TV's made from the 90's onwards support a format called PAL60, which is what PS2, GC and a lot of PAL Dreamcast games support. But yeah with a regionfree mod you can basically play imports/backups from the US or Japan in 60Hz too, with a way better video signal and TV to boot ;)

@alakani 4 жыл бұрын
Assuming he did ever own a disc of the game, then ReviveDC could probably be considered an Authorized Agent under 17 U.S. Code § 117 in this particular situation, so it very well might be legal. I don't know if that's ever been formally adjudicated though, probably because honestly no one cares. No one is losing money from people playing Dreamcast games in 2020. Nor was anyone ever losing much money due to piracy, if you believe the massive amount of peer-reviewed scientific research that seems to show that people tend to only pirate things that they have no way of buying in the first place. In many cases, people go back and buy the thing later, or generate third party sales via word-of-mouth even if they can never afford to buy it, or if it's not available in their area. This is because most people have feelings. Only 1% of the general population are psychopaths who choose (in many cases, according to fMRI research) to turn off their feelings and take advantage of people just for kicks. However, according to research data, over 20% of CEOs are psychopaths, compared to 1% of everyone else. So they tend to be really paranoid and just assume everyone would do what they would do when it comes to questions of ethics (for example, bragging about your "winnings" while underpaid people are dying of heat stoke in your warehouses), and then project that narrative to all their flying monkeys to repeat to everyone, regardless of what real research actually says. You know there are some developers and musicians, myself included, who actually encourage piracy of their own work, and they still make money. Maybe it's just the people who make stuff so shitty that people DON'T want to go back and buy it later, after they get a chance to actually see it, who are spreading this nonsense.

i was looking to see if anyone said this. lol. Because you can't just put dreamcast games in a PC and back them up. Dreamcast games are not CD-roms they are GD-roms which is a disc format that can only be read by the dreamcast. the only way to actually make a backup is to do it through a network connection to a PC and it takes a LONG time. and on top of that cutscenes need to be shrunk in order for the GD-Rom data to fit on a CD-rom. kind of funny how he acts like you can just pop the disc in a pc and make a backup when you can't.

IIRC you can't copy the Dreamcast disc using your PC drive, the discs are proprietary 1gb GD-Roms. You would need some sort of software on the Dreamcast like Dreamshell to rip the GD-Rom. Then you would have to transfer it to the PC and modify the media to fit a CD-R in MIL format. It's way easier just to find the premade CDI online. (Which is what he did)

This was the first console I ever took apart and was able to put back together too. I remember getting this for Christmas of '99. I got NFL 2K with it and played it non stop. About a year later the GD ROM drive stopped reading my games. I went to EB Games with my mom and bought a used Dreamcast, went home and swapped the GD ROM drive. Went back to EB Games and returned the used Dreamcast I bought from them and told them it didn't work. The benefit of keeping the original Dreamcast with the swapped GD ROM drive was games like PSO wouldn't view it as a different system. To this day I still have that Dreamcast and that GD ROM drive is still working.

Brilliant video, here in the UK you can still get brand new bits and pieces for the DC, Controllers, keyboards, VMUs and rumble packs, you see them on ebay from time to time and I remember seeing a lot at bidding auctions before the internet took off going for very little, sometimes it was sealed games but always the lesser titles like Metropolis Street Racer and Chu Chu Rocket normally in x50 auctions, it varied but mostly games like these, remember in europe they have fancy blue and clear cases which broke easy so were worth it really cheap just for the cases or part cases. Check the inside of your controller for dust, if there isn't any, it's found new stock. The games were a rip off IMHO maybe 1 boxed game and 1 VMU (it doesn't need it's batteries!), I noticed you used the Revive DC version of Crazy Taxi (Mmm) looks like half the internet noticed too, good luck with that HDMI mod I look forward to seeing the video on that. I changed the LED in my DC when I did my Battery MOD which is now a battery holder not soldered in, remember it uses a rechargable battery (LIR2032).

I got married and and a career and basically forgot about gaming to a degree. I'm loving this old system now.

You can check if the Dreamcast you have plays back-ups by looking at the sticker on the bottom on the bottom right close to where it says NTSC or PAL, it should have a number to the left. If it's 0 or 1, you're good to play back-ups. If it's 2 or higher, you're not able to play any burned games. FYI.

Pro tip for anyone here; your Dreamcast GD-Rom drives rails dry out over time, the plastic pieces of the laser sliding down the metal rails with no lube or dried out lube cause that grinding sound. At worst, this issue can completely cause your Dreamcast to stop reading discs, with almost no lube the drives get hung up and appear to stop working. If you use white lithium grease to re-lube the rails on the drive, the drive becomes MUCH quieter, and in almost all cases the drives come back to life like that if they’ve stopped working. HIGHLY recommend doing that to any Dreamcast or console you own!
