Performed live, 25th March 1950, by Bill Shirley and Gale Robbins.
This wonderful song came from an episode of "The Ed Wynn Show." I offer it as a little reminder that there was once a thing as civilization.
Gale Robbins was present in many musicals, among them "The Barkleys of Broadway," "Three Little Words" and "Calamity Jane."
Bill Shirley provided the singing voice of Jeremy Brett in "My Fair Lady." He also sang "Once Upon a Dream" for the Disney feature "Sleeping Beauty."
The song was written by Edward Heyman and Victor Young. Amongst other recordings is a duet by Dick Haymes & Patty Andrews.
I love this number so much. It reminds me of the early 1929/30/31 Hollywood musicals: so much enthusiasm, talent, a relaxed atmosphere, basic lighting and camera set-ups and everything recorded live. Minimum pretentiousness, maximum freshness.
Lastly, please excuse the poor picture quality: it's off an mp4, off an mpeg2, off a 16mm copy, off a kinescope. It has a right to look a little tired. The entire episode (with a guest appearance from Gloria Swanson) can be found at archive.org.
