I remember when I was 18 I tried to get a car and they told me 31% intrest and my friends were telling me to do it! And I was about to but I had to think about it and that’s when I realized they weren’t really my friends! I was almost purchased the car under peer pressured and would’ve messed up my financial life

I listened back to it again and we hear very little about him but what is said is they aren't married (no idea why), he is in EMT school, and he is working at a grocery store (no idea how many hours), and also no debt. even if we assume that he isn't working 40 hours a week I don't hear anything that says selfishness. as you say he needs to take care of his kid he is going to school so that he can make more money, he is working while he goes to school to provide and he has at least had the financial literacy to not bring debt into the relationship. I might be missing something and there is a lot we don't know, but I would love to hear your thoughts on where the selfishness is in what they said.

I've seen a lot of people buy cars they can't afford either because they want to look wealthy driving a newer car or because they don't understand the cost of keeping that car. I've been an automotive technician for years and I daily drive a 92 Acura Integra for a reason. I saw a guy drop off a V12 Mercedes Benz at the shop I used to work at and he never picked up the car because he didn't have the money to pay for the services performed.
