Agreed - the other ones were too complex to be effective cadences. A cadence is something groovy you play during a parade where the rest of the band needs to be able to march in time at 120 bpm. It’s not a parking lot ram.

These were all surprisingly GOOOD for the money. I remember being a band meeting trying to find someone to write us a show and we were getting quotes for $1-5k per chart per piece per show regularly. Drum work was never under $500 per cadence. This was in the 90's.

For the 2nd cadance, you probably hired someone who is familiar with writing HBCU Drumline features. Almost sounds like the BCU 2017 Percussion Feature. Very good cadance.

For $5.... that was worth every damn penny.... even without sticking and cymbal instructions... my other favorite was the $30 - that one was easy to settle in and march to.... Here's the thing that a lot of percussionist writers forget, they love to do these huge soli areas and show offs, but you have to remember the point of the cadence is so everyone can march in time together... maybe I'm old school, but I think a groove is the best way to do that...

Well you hold it about a 45 degree angle and hit the cymbal one side first then the other, though still in one stroke. If you hit the cymbal evenly on both sides at once then it makes like an air pocket. I did percussion in high school so I only kinda remember

It’s pretty despicable how little arrangers/writers get paid. My uni’s concert band director told me she’d pay me minimum wage hourly to make a baritone BC part transposed from the TC part. I went through and replicated the copyright info, the exact measure spacing all of that, so that it was as professional and close to the TC original as possible. She balked at having to pay me for 4 hours of work - $44. Said “is $25 okay?”

I would definitely say the first one is the best cadence. The other pieces are great in their own right, but the point of a cadence is to sound groovy, but also keep the band in step. Imagining a band trying to stay in step for the last cadence would be hilarious
