I disagree that everything he played was spot on. I feel like he understood the premise of the original fills, internalised them and improved upon them. I could be wrong, but I don't think he replicated the original, so much as replicated the intent and feel of the original.

Hey Gabe, thanks for picking me for your video - much appreciated (the 40$ drummer). There is a tiny thing though - the original video I sent you of me playing is in 160bpm and the one in your youtube video is slowed down by about 5 bpm - maybe a post-production error? Thanks for the reply - your fan Dušan (Slovakia)

Maybe a 44.1 to 48kHz convertion...it was really great tho ! Faster is not better, (I recorded this at 170bpm as well as at 160bpm and 170bpm was not grooving) and your slower version was sounding great! :)

Rarely make comments on ANY video, but this one deserves my time. To begin, the whole $300 concept was great - gonna check out your other videos. Hats off to all the "human" drummers, not only for your approach, skills, drum sounds/recordings , and overall musicianship. I enjoyed every one - found plus qualities in each. The second drummer's audio recording is the one I'd most like to emulate (YES, the toms sounded fantastic - the whole set actually, and cymbal sounds and choice of cymbals - nice, nice, nice!!!). Thanks to everyone who contributed to a an awesom watch and listen! :)

It is also amazing to see how many talented and great drummers are out there just that not all are on KZfaq or are known at all, and that opens the doors for all to realize that being "famous" does not equal good or the best it only mean "known good" but certainly there are "greats unknown". Man the playing in the $80 one on the crossover groove is a clear cut above the others. He goes into it like it's nothing and completely nails every part of it, perfect subdivision timing and he uses the dynamics perfectly to maintain the feel of the original groove. There's nothing about it that isn't absolutely crystal clear.

Great idea ! My experience was that, when I got the order, I almost refused it as I though that I wouldn't be able to play what was asked and that I don't like videos that makes artists in competition (and Gabe did an awsome job here at not making this a competition)...but I trusted Gabe (I'm glad that I did) and transcribed what he sent me (by slowing down the video A LOT ! ! ! ) I then learned hit by hit to play it at like 80bpm or so. When I'd learnd everything, I let the knight do it's awsome job at developing what have been learned. The next day I re learned everything slowly, hit by hit again at around 80 bpm. Then bumped up the tempo until 170bpm and recorded it multiple times to help me finetune my playing. Did a break. And recorded the final take an houre later. And the all process was really FUN and a great oportunity for me to improove :) Hope that helps and the others will do the same :)

I love these types of videos. Super raw and it's great to see interpretation. One question tho if Gabe can answer... What is the ratio of accuracy to creativity were you looking for? Did you want it more accurate than creative or vise versa? I only ask cause with the jazz drummer and even the programmed drums, we could say there's a lot of interpretation done and it was creative with the phrasing. Just a thought. You rock dude

no joke, that bass drum on the second to last hits you like a 12 gauge to the chest. great sounding kit and player.

Love all your videos because they are original and always extremely impressive. You prevail! Thank you for your posts. Your videos have helped me become a much better drummer. I think they all did a great job. I like the last two the best but for the price charged I would have to pick the $47 one. God bless you Gabe keep prevailing!

I did like the first drummer, and you're right, it was so completely different (speaking from a non drummer point of view). The only thing that I thought was that the drum set didn't sound very good, and I'm not sure why other than it may just be the camera microphone picking it up, but he was great. Drummer 2 was great and it sounded great. I thought the electronic drums sounded somewhat overdriven. Good effort on that one, but I know it doesn't replace a human. The last two drummers were awesome, but in my personal opinion, I liked the sound of the last one's drum set the best. It sounded nice and snappy. I'm not sure if it was microphone choice, but it just sounded consistent all the way through, fidelitywise. Thanks for sharing. The first time I stumbled on one of your videos.

Should hire all the drummers you can and ask them to play simplest 2&4 beat for some bars and a fill of their choice and just document how different people would feel it.

Need that bass drum tuning on the second to last one. I am happy with the direction this took I was worried we were going to have a bit of a bashing session here (kinda like how I play, LOL).

It's mostly the same as the Benny Greb tuning style...but with a 22 bass drum :D And I agree, I was worried about this becoming a competition video and Gabe did a really great job at making it a great video !
