No matter how you slice it, getting tattooed is an intimate experience. Even if you don't realize it, the act of tattooing creates a bond between the artist and client. There's nothing better than a good conversation while getting tattooed, but there are definitely some things that you should not say to your tattoo artist. We asked our artists some of the worst things they've been told by clueless clients.
Welcome to Season 21 of Tattoo Artists React! I bet you didn’t think we’d make it this far, did you? We certainly didn’t. This time around we’ve gathered a bunch of our favorite tattooers and asked them a bunch of questions… you know, like we’ve done every other season. But that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a ton of fun! Like, you’ve probably eaten french fries 10,000 times but when you see them on the menu you still order them. I’m rambling. No one reads this part of the description anyways, do they? If you are still reading this please comment “Cheese is mankind’s fifth greatest achievement” down below. Enjoy.

I can understand it being frustrating when a client wants to change things, but man... there's space in between "you should listen to your artist's suggestions, they're the expert" and "how dare this person who is paying significant amounts of money (and who will have the result essentially forever) ask for something that they want"
@hannahore8953
@hannahore8953 Жыл бұрын
It’s typically when someone is fickle and cannot ground their ideas. Changing things is totally fine, we want you to love your tattoo, but to change your entire idea after hours and hours (or days) of concept building, collaboration and drawing and showing up the day of expecting this concept change to be fast. It can be very difficult to work with someone who doesn’t know what they want. These changes/ ideas need to be decided before the appointment date. This is coming from a tattoo artist . :) all love
@Emcobb2
@Emcobb2 Жыл бұрын
@@hannahore8953 I totally get that. One of my artists, we did like a 20 minute consultation and then I sent her a ton of pictures of the aesthetic I was looking for. She never sent me an idea of what she was thinking. I totally understand not wanting someone to take your drawing somewhere else, but I got responses of ok. I get where you’re going. Day of the appointment, I hated the drawing. I showed her more ideas of what I was looking for and she begrudgingly made some changes. We finally settled on something that I didn’t love. When it was over, I hated it. I was trying to figure out if I could get someone to fix it. It was solid black. I sat with it for a few years. Eventually I got a sleeve by another artist and incorporated it with that. 10 years later there are still a few parts in it I don’t love, but the sleeve is dope, so whatever now. Also, I’m pretty easy. I let my second artist do whatever she wanted

@@terminaldeity ??? Why? Because you want to have something on your body forever that you actually like? Why wouldn’t it be okay to ask for changes in a tattoo? It’s my body and sometimes two people have a different picture in mind of one thing, totally fine, but it’s absolutely okay to explain that and wanting it altered. The client isn’t saying fck you, your art is ugly, it might just not be quite right. What’s wrong with that? If a tattoo artist is not okay with making changes to a piece, doesn’t listen and is treating you badly because you want something in the design changed, that’s on the artist, that’s not okay. Granted, if the client wants to make really big changes to the design, that’s not okay either. But an open and honest conversation between the two parties, both willing to listen to one another should be given.

I fully believe that tattooing is an artform and should be respected. Tattoo artists are chronically underrated artists. THAT BEING SAID: they chose to express their talent and artistry in a field where another person is going to be dealing with the final results for the rest of their lives. So while I agree with their sentiment of "listen to the expert artist" there's gotta be a balance between that and getting annoyed with a customer for being picky about something that's going to be on their body forever, that they're paying you hundreds of dollars for.
@terminaldeity
@terminaldeity Жыл бұрын
No not really. Find an artist whose style you like and let them do their thing. Micro managed tattoos NEVER look right.
@sandydog426

@@terminaldeity "No not really." Ok but yes really lol. If you read my comment, you'd see that I fully agree that micro-managing as the client is bad. You have to communicate with your artist and tell them what you want, but trust their instincts. In turn, the artist needs to not get annoyed when a client--who again, is paying them hundreds of dollars for a permanent tattoo--is a bit picky about what's going on their skin. There's a balance between the two extremes.

I actually agree with the fact that the design should be discussed and shown before the session to get the tattoo done. Minor changes at Go Time are fine, but asking an artist to completely rework it and expecting to then get it the same day? No. Usually, tattoo artists have sessions booked back to back so asking them to do this is asking them to ignore the other client for you. If there are major alterations then be respectful and ask to reschedule the actual ink and see if they are willing to rework during the time you were supposed to be getting the tattoo. They aren't being assholes about being annoyed. They are remembering the three other people they are trying to ink that come in behind you.

exactly!! I've trusted every artist and guess what!!! got absolutely screwed by a really talented artist who had my trust and then lost the confidence in her self and gave me a mess of a chest piece. So like trusting the expert has its place but being specific about what you DONT want is crucial

one thing I can tell you, I would probably not get tattooed by any artist who wanted me to be quiet during my tattoo, or not be vocal about things before they happen. SO many artists nowadays are doing free hand tattoos which doesn't allow the client to see before hand to make changes, which means the client HAS to be very specific

My latest tattoo I didn't convey 100% what I wanted and it was on me when my guy showed me his design and I didn't like it. He redrew and I changed 1 thing and I was so happy with it. As an artist, ofcourse you want to have your creative freedom and have a piece that is your vision but also the client has a right to speak up being that it's going on their body permanently. It is a collaboration which has to have respect going both ways. If all artists had the mentality of "This is what I drew, don't like it get out" there'd be a lot less people getting tattoos today.

As a designer I KNOW what I want and how I want it to look. The consultation is part of the actual tattoo session and they expect you to be ok w/ the 20-30min of "design" work that they do and NOT be picky about what goes on your body for the rest of your life because they like THEIR tattoo design better. I dnt understand what tattoo artists problem w/ micromanaging. We go to them because we THINK they can make OUR ideas come to life like to TATTOO my idea not design my tattoo. Some LITERALLY just find pic on pinterest and jus blend things together on procreate and call it a design. S/o to the ACTUAL tattoo artists/designers that do things from scratch.

Yeah, there are nice ways how to ask and also wrong ways how to ask. And like, just because someone is asking it doesn't mean that they are automatically an asshole. People need to know sometimes! Maybe they need to be somewhere and there has been a delay with previous customer, so now they are also delayed and they need to deal with that by making a call or possibly stopping the tattoo and scheduling a second appointment. Maybe they have a car parked somewhere and they have 20 minutes to either move it or extend the parking via sms before it expires. Maybe they are getting hungry and they are wondering whether they should order something to the shop and eat it during next break or if they can wait it up until the whole thing is done and eat after. Or maybe they took some painkillers before the thing but they are starting to wear out so they are debating whether they can take 10 more minutes unmedicated or whether they should take another dose because it will be 40 more minutes or what. People are people, not just inanimate canvases that have nothing else happening ever. Let them ask without groaning and just give them their answer! That being said, whining about how much the thing hurts and being a brat by throwing a tantrum about how long it takes is definitely worth kicking them out unfinished

Maybe they've implemented a successful system where work and fun and cash influx are all balanced. Maybe you're just a figment of my fight club! I love and embrace you as a part of me, Mr. Durden. sometimes i wonder why people even bother getting tattoos if all they're going to do is complain the whole time. i just go in, tell them my idea and let my guy run with it. he draws up his vision and we get going. take the pain or get out. pay them or get out. plain and simple.

There are two kinds of tattoos, one is the kind where the client wants something specific, and the tattooist needs to be able to understand, appreciate, and copy the original image, and the other kind is where the client wants the tattooist to make something they really like that hopefully the client also likes. If the tattooist isn't clear about being excited about doing both, then they should be very clear up front. It's fine to have a preference, and totally normal to only want to do one or the other, but be completely honest about it, so that there's no time wasted. Ideally, clients would share their visions of what they want with the larger tattooist community, and tattooists would be able to choose their clients, essentially, based on how much they wanted to do the tattoo the client wanted (and with the client's permission, of course). It makes no sense for clients to have to shop around, or get stuck with a tattooist who doesn't really love the client's vision.

When artist get mad at change requests that’s a red flag. I’m paying 1g for a tattoo that will be on me forever … if one doesn’t like something drop the attitude … no I’m not talking about the Karen’s and Darren’s of the world … but so what if you drew for an hour and someone wants a change ? Paying 800- 1g for a tattoo I mean cmon. Yes I research my artists and trust their opinion but if I have a strong feeling of “ no” I’m not keeping that on me forever and being mad .

I did go to an artist, which turned out to actually charge people based on what they did. She would talk on the consult, and based on answers, she would open space or not as well as change the pricing and all which is so messed up

That sounds like she had some Experience™ with a bunch of previous customers and decided to calculate her payment for not only time and skill provided, but also for the level of sanity and self-control she needed to sacrifice for the job's sake. Because honestly, no artist ever would come up with those extra steps just for funzies. It sounds like "enough is enough, i'm not getting payed enough to deal with this shit" situation

@Silly Jellyfish while that could be an alternative, part of her questions where your job (turns out to determine how much her price would change) and as much as I wished it was for better reasons, she was good at talking and scamming. I waited for my tattoo and ended up with something I'm lightening with laser to cover it up because my back is scarred. She ended loosing all her artists for it and other issues...

1:40 Can someone explain to me why it's not okay to take something to help with the pain before a tattoo session? Waaaait... Is she implying illegally obtained PKs like Oxycontin and I'm too dense to figure that out? I'm under the impression she means Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

She's implying illegal drugs. You can tell by the editing and the fact that she avoided mentioning the drug(s). Tattoo artists are fine with you taking ibuprofen 20-30 minutes before.

I’ve had all my work done by the same guy at the same shop I’ve been quiet and awkward, and overly talkative. He doesn’t care as long as I’m not moving around saying stupid stuff or at risk of a medical emergency. One of the few people that’s allowed to have someone sit in with me because of my epilepsy, the shop even went viral on tiktok because of an over the garden wall tattoo someone did. Seems to me like a lot of these artists aren’t good with people and just want $$ you need good bedside manner I have a sleeve and still get stupid nervous every time I get new ink. A lot of people see their artists as a friend of sorts but these people hell no

I'm sorry, but if I give my artist inspiration pics and a description of what i want and they draw it up , and say there's just a couple things Id like to switch up on it, I SAY SO. And my artist never seems to be bothered by it whatsoever. Its my tattoo, my idea, and my money. That shit goes on you forever. If its ALMOST what you had in mind but a couple tweaks here or there makes it perfect for you, why would anybody have a problem editing it a little bit considering they did it FOR YOU in the first place? Tattoos are expensive, and permanent. Don't be wishing you would have said something for the rest of your life, and every time you look at it you focus on that little piece you wish was slightly different....I don't get how that's so offensive...

I feel like most of these artists think they are above everyone. I have set great on all mine, ribs, arms, legs, etc. If the artist if I need a break I say yes because I know they want a break, i dont talk to them unless they say something. My wife has cried everytime she has got a tattoo. Not everyone is built like a brick. Every profession has its clients and I deal with whiney fucks that plant fast growing trees under powerlines. I explain with understanding. Not putting myself up on a pedestal.
