In this behind the scenes wedding photography video I photograph a wedding using my first ever DSLR camera, a 15 year old Nikon D70.
I talk about how the camera compares to my current wedding camera, the Sony A9 and what a difference 15 years worth of technology makes to wedding photographers.
At the end of the video I show slideshows of photographs taken with both the Nikon D70 and the Sony Alpha A9.
A huge thank you to Marcin and Chris for allowing me to photograph their wedding and also to my good friend and fantastic wedding photographer Neil Ridley (www.neilridley.com/) for inviting me to tag along this crazy experiment!

Looking forward to watching this one Neil! I still have my D70 and will never sell it. But I'm so sentimental that my collection still includes my whole history of DSLRs - D70, D200, D700 (x2) D750 (x2) D800 and now the D850. Probably should have recouped some $$$ along the way but I love having them as mementoes to my photographic journey!

It looked like such a fun and joyful wedding with everyone enjoying it. The venue was also wonderful. Thanks for carrying out such an interesting experiment showing how far technology has improved. I fondly remember using my D40 when I first started and like you will not part with it. The photos you got with the D70 are a credit to your skill as a documentary wedding photographer.

I’m not a wedding photographer so I found this fascinating. You mention single shots vs continuous. How many photos would you normally take? I would imagine that the culling process is quite a lot of work wIth modern cameras.

Hi Neil ! im smiling writing these comments ! It's funny how you showed which camera you took what pics with at the end ! Funny, because its really hard to see any difference ! Its shows its the photographer and your camera knowledge and not the latest greatest gear that makes the difference ! It might have been harder to get those images , BUT , they are still amazing ! I always love your colours ! So vibrant and warm ! I don't think any camera salesmen will want to show this video !!!! hahahaha!!! Great job as always !!! I love your videos !! That too was my 1st camera !! It's in a box somewhere ! ps you even got amazing reception shots in the low light !!! AWESOME !!!!

I know this video is 3 years old but was a fun watch! I still have my D70s my 1st DSLR will never sell it either still use my D3S for weddings and I’ve had it for 13 years, still does the job well (I do have good lenses) dont need 20+ megapixels as I would never need a print that large. All to say older DSLR’s are still awesome and for most dont need the newest best DSLR with extra bells and whistles and the $8-9000 price tags attached! Save that for good quality glass (my opinion :)) anyway thanks for this video :)

I think you did quite well Neil but I’m sure it was challenging to say the least...NO BACK BUTTON FOCUS! Once I started Using it I rarely ever got any out of focus images! Adore it...the hardest thing is when people want to use my camera and take pictures of me ...trying to explain how to use the BBF and then use the shutter ...many people just don’t get it lol, thanks for sharing this ..fun and different..

This video proves that it doesn't matter what gear you use instead what matters is the skills required to get great compositions. I own a Samsung NX5 which I bought back in 2011 and I still use it till today and I get incredible results. I believe photography is an art which takes hard work and determination to make it perfect.

The D70 was my first DSLR. Got it in 2005. The photos in my opinion came out great. You captured the excitement, and you really have an eye for candid photos. The proof is in the pudding, and you proved yourself. I've seen wedding photos with the latest cameras and I feel second-hand embarrassment, because they're really bad. Even though it's an old camera, you showed it's still as capable and good-looking as back when it came out, even if now you're spoiled with the faster cameras. God bless!

Great vlog Neil thank you. You used that Nikon D70 to its best of its ability, because you have the experience in weddings, photography and know what light, where you can push it to get the best image you can with the tools to hand. I look forward to you trying this in fifteen years time with the A9 and the model you will using then. Before digital era photographers were already taking weddings photographs… High iso capability is great but you can use flashes if you need more light, today off camera flash are so good with wireless, TTL etc. For focusing same thing in the seventies photographers were all manual and just an autofocus lens was a dream, so 5 points af would have been heaven for them 😀 personally I prefer middle point focussing and then re compose so don’t mind zillion af points. Today’s cameras are great tools but they are just that tools, giving us more confort to do the job

Wow, this takes me back. Started digitally myself with the D70 and the D1X. Both cameras were fab at the time as obviously, you know no better. The images out of the D1X over 800 ISO were terrible though. And as you say, the slowness, lack of focus points, back button focus, and the tiny screens must have made this incredibly difficult for you. I reckon you did a sterling job there though Neil, top marks and a great video to watch. Reminds me to never do this myself... ;-)

I picked up a d80 for very cheap with only 8000 shutter actuations. What surprised me was the vibrancy of the colours. I heard it might have something to do with the ccd sensor they have which. At iso100 it has virtually no noise in the picture. In any case I use it more often than you would think. The d80 has 10Mp and to be honest for most people that is all they ever need unless they are a) printing out very large (and lets be honest how often is that done be non professionals or b) want to crop you photos (in that case you could try better in camera composition) or c) you are a mega pixel peeper. Ps I also have a d200 for fun which is like a tank and has most of the things more modern cameras have too....The d200 cost me 80 euro....ps.. your seems all shiny so you must have used it hell of a lot. Which shows how well built these things are
@ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRIST
@ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRIST 4 жыл бұрын
Yup! I agree. Cool thing is that from the D200 down, all Nikon DXX models have CCD image sensors (which were made by Sony) and they produce that filmic look to their colors; it's the CCD charm lots of people enjoy. In my opinion, any of those older Nikon D series cameras still look as impressive today as they did back when they came out, and even better now that we have superior, higher-res displays. Except for large prints or 4K wallpapers and higher (the 6MP models), they look just as good as newer cameras. I really appreciate the look of CCDs and disregard their lower megapixel count. I have a Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro that I love and shoot weekly. It's my beach camera. Recently, I was blessed to get a brand new Nikon D70s on eBay from the original owner. It felt so good shooting the first picture and seeing the shutter count at 1. If I want higher-res photos, I got a Sony A7R II for that, but honestly, I have good Nikkor lenses, so I enjoy pixel-peeping on the D70s, too. God bless!

Watch the space...mirrorless cameras remind me of the advent of Cds in the early 80s. We lauded compact disc so much back in the days. Some of us traded our vinyl collection for cds stupidly. Fast forward 40yrs, vinyls are making a huge come back at twice the price of a cd. Enjoy your mirrorless cameras, don't sell your DSLRs!!!!!
