Just picked up a BOP pattern long tailshaft TH400. Tearing it down to evaluate the condition, and getting ready to start cleaning up the 5.3L from the FireTurd.

If that trans was a bit older it would be a ST400, super turbine that would have a dual stal speed converter.

I really don’t know that much about transmissions. I’m still trying to learn, and Buick Oldsmobile and Pontiac did a lot of different stuff than Chevrolet and GMC back in the earlier years. So I’ll have to do some research on the ST400. Not really sure what the advantage of a dual stall speed converter would be.

@@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839 Well, high stal was used to get those old huge land barges moving off of idle and then it would go into low stal for cruising. The switch was usually hooked up to the carbonmaker so it would go into high stal at idle for easier braking at a light, just past idle would go into low stal for lower RPM acceleration and cruising until about 2/3 peddle it goes back in high stal. It was like having an extra gear back then They also made a ST300 which was a 2 speed with a switch pitch converter, First gear sucked as bad as a powerglide, Those 2 have very few interchangeable parts, basically the only thing they had in common was that they were 2 speed transmissions.

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 I started looking into this. Looks pretty interesting if you have a heavy car. I was also thinking it might be pretty sweet on a drive and drag event car as well. High stall when you step on it, and low stall when you cruise. Probably help a lot with transmission temps on the driving portions.

@@armchairmechanicsnetwork9839 Oh yeah, you can even get the stal speeds custom made for what you want, within reason anyway. IIRC if you raise the high stal the low stal will rise too? Don't quote me on that though because it has been years since I researched the ST400. A lot of that info can be found on v8 buick dot com in the juice box section. The owner of that site even sells converters, regular and switch pitch, he claims his regular high stal converters run like a low speed converter when you're not in the throttle? Although I can't personally confirm that I have heard good things about it. A ST400 with a gear vendors OD behind it is more work than a 4L80E to install but the last time I looked is less expensive. The Gear Vendors unit was around $1,200 the last time I looked but the trans controller for the 80E was about $750. So it depends on what trans you have already that will save you some cash? Unless you can find a deal on a good used Gear Vendors O/D unit?

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 I have a 4L80e in unknown condition. Honestly, I would use the Terminator X from the FireTurd in another car and just get the Terminator X Max that has the transmission control built in because it would give me the control box and another ECU for the same price as the GV unit.

If you don't want to dump alot of money into shirts right now consider iron-ons!
