Anything with the misfortune to have been "developed" by the ex(?) mobile gambling app devs and tobacco industry enthusiasts, 343 Industries....so every halo made since Bungie surrendered their miracle genius child to the weird guy in a van down by the river because they had to "go buy milk and smokes". Series stopped at 3 as far as I'm concerned and the real Chief is dead in a gutter.

I don't like being too harsh on the Kong game because the devs were forced to make it in a year's time (from scratch) by the publisher, who apparently didn't give them much direction or assistance. The Verge has an interview with a couple of the devs. There's not much that anyone could do in that situation.

fun fact about that horse game: I'm pretty sure it is just a very weird remaster/port of another game released back in 2008 (I think?) called my riding stables - life with horses. That one was a true childhood banger and has much more content and is a bit more in depth. It's just so weird seeing that game basically reskinned in 3rd person considering how old it is lol especially since the old one somehow manages to look better.

Was so sad to see Knights of Pen and Paper get such a disappointing sequel in 3. I played the second one for hours and hours when I was younger on my tablet, since I didn’t even have a laptop or a pc. It was a joy to play on long rides or when I was at home. Was excited to see where the 3rd one would go, but...yeah.

21:43 Skull Island: Rise of Kong is not related to 2017's Monstervese film. The name Kong & Skull Island are in this grey area of public domain due to the original novelization, but the title 'King Kong' is copyrighted. There's multiple Kong projects out there from TV shows, board games & movies that have no relation to Warner Bros., and film rights are all over the place in terms of who owns what.

In defense of (the original) only up's dev, they removed the stolen assets quickly when called out, I don't think they ever intended for the game to get as big as it did.

I feel like there's some great emergent horror to come from something like Chinese Train Trip. what with the cars repeating ad nauseum and all. it wouldn't take much to tweak it into a subtle horror experience

Really sad to hear about KoP&P3. I really liked the first one but honestly lost track of the series, and didn't realize it had so many titles in it now. Still, sucks to have a quaint and fun game turned into schlock over time.

the interesting thing with the horse game for me is that when i was younger i had the exact same game on my 3ds, just with different graphics. So the game is basically copy and paste lol

As soon as I saw My Riding Stables, I just went "Oh god, isn't this that Switch game?" It's either that or one is an asset flip of the other. The Switch version also apparently has some pretty awful input delay, I think Beat 'Em Ups covered it at some point. Side note, "hidden travesty" was really clever. It got a good chuckle out of me

Since You showed us more bad games I found out that the publisher/dev behind the Horse Game made Bibi Blocksberg games and I was pretty surprised that there are even games about German Animated Series about Witch Kid which was part of my childhood. What I read those games are pretty good. Also Revolution 60 reminds me so much about Megaman Battle Network in one Minigame to be honest.

2024 has to be one of my most observed terrible launch/just bad games year. With games like Gollum and Kong taking the cake with devs that made poor choices. Also City skylines 2 launch with tons of issues. And not even to the fact that the asset flip and awful porn games rapidly consuming steams library where if your like me with the que cleared you’d find it hard to find even a decent made recent game.

10:48 It seems pretty obvious to me. The horse-looking thing on the compass is your horse, and the circle is the checkpoint. But I admit it is bad design for the checkpoint to seem to be moving instead of the horse.

Actually, while King Kong is, himself, public domain, that's because the copyright on the original novelisation expired in the 60s. Crucially, any elements that were renamed in the original film are not public domain, and that includes Skull Island.

It seems ive been buying new games less and less i very rarely purchase games at full price even good games just dont seem to justify $60-$80 I'm unsure if im just getting old or the industry is changing or perhaps both

Yea same for me the only things I see worth getting newer nowadays is multiplayer strategy games and even those are slowly getting ruined by the devs/publishers. CA being a big destroyer of its IPs currently as they basiclaly forced me to boycott them for the forseeable future.

Or perhaps you were never that into gaming? And it was just something you did because those at school did and now you left you have no reason to keep the charade up? Jeff Minter still plays games. So do people like Romero and Carmack. They are all over 50. What about Shirley Curry? Known as Skyrim granny? As I said, sounds more like you are a poser with nobody to pose for. Gaming hasn't gotten any worse. You are an idiot if you think it has. Wii was filled with shovelware. Steam Greenlight was a shitshow. Games in the 8 and 16bit era used to lie on the boxes to get you to rent them. Don't even get me started on Arcades being as bad as F2P. Look at it this way. Kids are bitching like little f**** babies about the cost of COD MW3... Saying "it's DLC charged full price" ... Yet MW2 back on the 360 and PS3 had 4 DLC packs costing £15 each... So the exact same... SO the industry hasn't changed that much. Age has nothing to do with it. Maybe you will find some friends and you wont feel the need to lie and fit in. Or maybe you will find friends with a hobby you actually enjoy.

How do you thihnk youtubers like AVGN managed to make a living? If anything the quality of games is higher now. I made the point about MW3 before. People bitch about the price and call it DLC with no hint of irony given season passes and DLC for the older MW games and black ops. The same with this... Personally some of the best games ive played in decades have come out recently!!! From Baldurs Gate 3 to the latest Zelda! Games like Chained Echoes have also made me so happy. Crossing Souls was another game I loved. I mean I am guessing you didn't game before 2015... Should I mention things like Simpsons Skateboarding? What about Sonic 06? or Godzilla from 2014? Or Charlie's Angels on ps2? Aliens Colonial Marine is pretty famous. This is such a stupid comment... ps2 and Wii was fucking awful for the shovelware... I mean there was even a God awful Little Britain game. And what about shit like Ninjabread Man... Which was reskinned into 4 different games. What about that awful Tomb Raider game that killed the franchise and Angelina Jolie tried to sue for affecting the box office of the second movie? What about the Crash games that killed the franchise? Or Spyro? They all came out around the same time on the PS2 and you are really gonna do the old man boomer gammon thing of "back in my day!" yeah back in your day when you had to buy little cards just to save your game, if the game was broken tough shit as no patches or bug fixes for you! Can't search youtube for gameplay and had to trust journalists ... Driv3rgate anyone? I know I know, you are both probably 23 and think that means you are now old... To which I say BS. If you think today is worse the height of ps2 and wii crapshoot of games you are an idiot. I mean look at all the Ubiplay shit on the DS aimed at girls and kids? What about all those MAry Kate and Ashley games... Yes multiple. You think Winners Circle on the game boy is a hidden gem?

After seeing the Knights of Pen and Paper mini-series review I'd love to see a look at the flash game series Sonny. Has a similar downfall with the only remnant being a sad app store remake - it just tread the same ground a few years earlier, really. Sucks when a really promising concept just gets churned through The System.

I don't know if you'd be interested at all, but there's this awful puzzle game called Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches. It's on Steam right now for $5, and I've played it twice to confirm that I hate it. Think of Myst, but set in Wales, and there's a section where you have to solve some puzzles with homeopathy. It's just dumb and disappointing.

In the Kong game there is literally a part of a cutscene which is an unformatted still frame of a boss monster so badly composited you can see the landscape (and the boss) behind it! That’s a new level of bad…

Revolution 60 is really nostalgic for me? It looks like its heavily inspired by the look of the old REBOOT cg cartoon series. Which was primitive as hell and was the first full cg animated show, so it looks like absolute garbage, iconic but still like CG cave paintings

Hey for the second game it kind of looks like it took a lot of stuff from Star Stable Online. If anyone here wants a horse game that’s infinitely better I recommend SSO! It’s So fun and has way more to do + it’s open world and I’ve been playing since I was 8 :). They’ve updated many times and so it’s more modern and has better horse models/animations. It also has magic horses that get released for special events you can buy and competitions you can compete in with over 30 players :>

37:10 ironically the visuals are the only thing about that game that has any value imo. It's so weird and unique that it just loops back into being that memorable kind of bad. That plastic shaded flat look with over-saturated colors kind of looks like that "ReBoot" show from the 90s and I'm all about it

Son, echoing what others have said - as interesting and well made as these dives are, make sure for moderation and breaks for fun between these. Also as others have said, I was not ready to see knights of pen and paper 3 here. I have good memories of playing the first one some years ago now... I can't say I'm surprised it could go the way it did, but certainly disappointed to find out.

While I am disappointed, I'm honestly not surprised. There were two different versions of knights of pen and paper 2, at least on Android. One was paid and the other was add supported with IAPs. I believe the paid version got quietly delisted with a "remove adds" microtransaction put into the fremium version as a replacement. They tried going back to the buy to play model with Galaxy but they found there was more money in nickel and diming the whales than there was in actually creating a good game. Imho Galaxy of pen and paper was the last half decent one, and even then, 1 and 2 still beat the crap out of it for most fans, myself included. I didn't even know 3 existed until today.

Sad to see that first game be part of a series that degraded in quality, though I should definitely play the first game. That seems like the most polished and inviting by far (unlike the third game, which is the exact opposite from what I’ve seen)

considering the bastard publisher gave the studio only a year to make the rise of kong it's not even that bad lol.. don't get me wrong, it is a dumpster fire but made only in a year it is really damn good..

I'm an artist and it would take me a long time to make those pixel graphics in knights of pen 3, so kinda sad to see you call it generic and bland. Also they animated enemies which is also cool and takes a long time

Also an artist, uh, unfortunately, art taking a long time to produce doesn't always translate to better quality, and that's sorta the case there. Also yeah, it's animated, but from the looks of it, appears to be produced using mostly puppet translation, which wouldn't take someone who's experienced with it as long as traditional animation would.

I truly loathe games/books/tv and movies that use pop culture references heavily such as Ready Player One. Also books like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy whose author thinks they're so clever and hilarious. I was so irrationally annoyed when i read through them. Im not saying they're objectively bad books. Its a matter of taste. My opinion doesn't matter more than everyone else's. Im glad people enjoy them. 😀

i loved hitchhiker's guide to the halaxy, the author snobbiness os because its intended to be satire of sci-fi for the most part but yeah most stuff that references pop culture is annoying

@cerealthe72nd that gives me a new perspective on the book. I didn't consider it being satire. I don't enjoy humor or satire in scifi/fantasy either way. It's a bit like starship troopers where It wasn't for me, but I appreciate what they're going for.

Playing My Riding Stables made me go crazy, it's such a bad and very boring game overall. They published multiple horse games that are almost the same. Same stable, same tasks, most of it looks identical. Super frustrating that one of the games is even funded/supported by a german federal ministry instead of an intuitive indie game. Sadly it's not the only horse game cash grab. The Unicorn Princess and My Little Riding Champion are two games that use the same models, mechanics, map, same missions, etc. Almost like the same game just with a very different title

the worst part of knights of pen and paper going the Mobile Game Route is that it was a legit good mobile game. seeing it on this list is disappointing, i played a lot of the original on my phone
