I think it's pretty obvious and you've understood it yourself, but to me it's because Van Gogh is so disconnected from reality at this point, that he doesn't even recognize himself. "Blade of Darkness" got re-released (and for the first time released on Steam!) in October 2021. The game is from 2001 - a decade before Souls, and it wasn't managed well, the studio went bankrupt, but the few lucky fans who played it back then built somewhat of a niche cult following. And many of them swear that this game is the true predecessor of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, due to countless similarities in the combat system and level design (and no, those weren't the same way in King's Field!). Now on Steam the game has "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating - which is kind of amazing for a game that is 20 years old. Blade does have some janky-ness, which is still there, but that's really part of its charm. Despite the fact most people who tried it appraise it, I don't think the game is nearly as famous among Souls fans as it should be. Not sure if it fully qualifies the theme of "games you've never heard of", but I bet 90% of viewers haven't heard of it still. I wholeheartedly recommend it for this series - and I hope you'd enjoy it! It's worth a full playthrough, even though it's a difficult and unforgiving game with a lot of tricks to learn to fully appreciate it.

Wow, you're right, someone released it on Steam/GoG and has been patching it for a bit. Crazy. Was definitely one of the gems of the early 2000's. Such a good and more unique experience back then, brutal and hardcore too, but going back now it's gonna be hard to get passed all the jank, especially if you want (or need) to use a controller. I'll probably watch someone play it through vs go at it myself, but that string might tug at me too much..

As an artist, Starry Knight almost made me cry Love the concept of Van Gogh's troubled artist life converted into an action game that slowly faced all the "bosses" that caused him to end his life (which is why the ending you fight himself, but because of his depression he sees himself as 'Stranger') and the quote at the end really struck me the most as an artist who, sometimes, also hate myself for not doing anything right in art. but I still keep doing art because I love art.

i really appreciate how despite the thumbnail lure of this series being "time to TEAR IN to the WORST GARBAGE that TALENTLESS SCHMUCKS have put up on steam!!!" the actual content is like, actually engaging with the games on their own terms, even the obviously extremely janky ones, and talking about what they do right in addition to where they fall short and the places they show potential. it's like, *almost* kinda clickbait-y, but the bait and switch is into kindness and thoughtful genuine engagement and good vibes so i'm fine with it

"Pain is the most profound of all human feelings" as a replacement for "YOU DIED" actually doesn't conflict with Dark Souls' lore, when i think about it. the whole thing of losing yourself from death and becoming a hollow - a death where you proclaim your humanity would be a very fitting cry for help for the hapless undead

Just wanna add onto the section about There Is No Light: The game has a large focus on weapon swapping. You heal by landing special attacks repeatedly, and the fist weapon excels at building the meter for those attacks. The greatsword attaches bombs to enemies which can be detonated by special attacks and specific abilities. The game heavily encourages rotating your weapons based on the situation, even moreso when you factor in the passive abilities that feed into that. The combat's tight as hell, but you're absolutely not going to enjoy it if you stick to one weapon.

"Art Direction" is what really carries a whole lot of these games, isn't it? Even with basic or even slightly clunky controls, a solid and cohesive art direction can really keep you enraptured That being said, if the gameplay is completely borked, then not even solid art direction can save you.

Perhaps why many people bounce off Unsighted despite the great game design/features? It's gaudy. Not as bad as A Valley Without Wind, but it's up there. Also looks like a cheap Hyper Light Drifter clone. That's probably as far as most people get..

as big of an impact as art direction has, to me a game could be the video game equivalent of the Mona Lisa but if the combat or gameplay loop is shallow or bad I'll probably not play it. But that's the thing about Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 (not remastered), the art direction and general tone of the game is so good that the mediocre/bland gameplay loop is excused. The vision and the whole lightning-in-a-bottle thing Fromsoft happened upon is just fantastic in my world. Meanwhile a game with great art direction but somewhat terrible gameplay loop (the not-so pixel perfect platforming especially) like Ori 1 makes it difficult for me to get into it and learning the mechanics properly enough to finish the game. Obviously, this is a very subjective thing for many people. Some people can finish a game for the worldbuilding in one game, while they might not be able to stomach another game which caters to a different style of game or a different story being told.

@@lane3574 CrossCode easily became my favorite Indie game ever. It's in my top 5 favorite games. I still remember finding its demo around the summer of 2016 on GameJolt. I thought its art style was really cute, and I thought it was interesting. So I made a mental note of it. I, by complete chance, came across it again in 2018 or 2019 on Steam after it had been fully released. I decided to pick it up for myself. I played it while waiting for Fire Emblem: Three Houses to come out in 2019, nearly three years exactly from the day I discovered the game. I beat it in a few days and fell in love with it. I wasn't very good at the time tho. I had to put on all the bitch-mode settings. When the DLC came out for the game, I replayed the entire thing and 100%ed everything I could outside of the arena (I technically got 100%, but I still had unfinished fights in some of the DLC matches) Best thing I learned from that playthrough? I got way better at the game. Never needed to make it easier or anything. Some of the later puzzles were so brutal but so satisfying to complete. I'm so fucking happy CrossCode is getting the attention it rightly deserves. It's a masterwork.

I think the big thing is that a lot of people probably get put off by the time mechanic. People really just don't like being timed and I don't think the turning that mechanic off is advertised enough. Then for the people who do know you can turn it off a portion probably just realize you're losing a huge aspect of the design and theme of the game by doing so (I personally fall here). Just every discussion I see about this game is about its use of time and how the games themes revolve around it. It's been in my wishlist for a while, but I don't think I'm ever gonna take it out. It's fine the game isn't for me and others. Sad though that it will lose them sales because I truly do believe the reviews that the game is good.
