Is there a wrong way to play a video game? This is a question I asked myself when playing the Greek God of War games about a year ago. In this video, I'll go over everything I learned from asking such a simple question

I'd encourage everyone to play Dante's Inferno if you can find it. Incredible game, worthy of an update and series. As far as the old God of War games, let me suggest the hardest mode with no upgrades (no upgrade run), and I'd also suggest doing the challenges. Each game has them. There is one challenge where you can't get hit at all or you fail (I'm not sure which game this challenge was on). I still go back through and play the old games, and try to find hidden chests. About 2 years ago, I found four chests in God of War 3 I had never found before. In about 18 months it will be the 20th anniversary for God of War. I'm not sure if they have anything planned, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a complete remaster, possibly even a remaster bundle to go with the PS5 Pro. We'll see what's in store because I can't imagine a 20 year anniversary to go by without any type of update.

Mostly agree, the only thing I dislike about the game is that part close to the end that pretty much feels like the challenge mode of god of war. As an optional thing it's okay, but in dantes inferno it's part of the main game and that shit is often just way too hard, even on normal. ^^;

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to play it. Clearly, SMS put immense effort into this world to create an experience for someone who's never played a video game before. You can play on Easy and have an awesome time because you're living the fantasy of an unstoppable Spartan warrior going on an epic adventure. But the awesome thing is, when you've played the game 100+ times, when none of the story or environments really engross you anymore, you can turn up the difficulty and find a new joy in a deep complex enjoyable combat system. SMS really thought of everyone here. These games are extremely accessible and vibes-heavy (which contributed to its popularity), but at the same time has a very deep thought out gameplay loop for the hardcore EPIC GAMERS out there. There's no "right" or "wrong" way. Anyone can enjoy them for one reason or another. You just shifted from one category to another is all. Both are perfectly valid.

@@KaptainKuba And you'd be wrong, because such an experience is *always* subjective. There will be others that do not enjoy it at all. There is no objectively better or worse way. I don't want to brag about it but I've beaten the older god of war games on the hardest difficulty a lot of times. What you said on the video is true. I try to use all the attacks and I want keep increasing the hits.

I don't agree there's a wrong way to play the game, as long as you're enjoying it. Hack'n'slash games usually have a lot of in-depth and hard to master mechanics, so if a person doesn't want to dive deep into all of this and just want to chill, i can totally understand it. Difficulty options are there for a reason. And i'm telling that as a combo enjoyer. But like, if you're not experiencing the whole thing with all the details and choosing only to play the story, for example, your opinion about the game will be missing these details as well. I mean, there's no wrong way to play a game, but there's a wrong way of judging it. If you're skipping some aspects of the game intentionally for your own comfort and enjoyment, you should skip these aspects as well when you're judging it. Of course, it is not how the game journalists work, they need to tell about every aspect for a review, but they don't have time or desire to explore every aspect, and because of that we have "button mashing" reviews. Again, not because they played it wrong, but because they judged it wrong. Sadly, that's how most reviews work.

Excellent points. To others who played GoW "wrong": The Challenge of the Gods/Titans is a good way to build up your skill with the weapons and combos. IMHO, if you enjoy the game, you're playing it right. But you do enjoy it more as you get better at changing up your attack/defense strategies.

Sounds like my the game Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu. It essentially could match the Bee button and make it to the game, much like you said about early God of War or Devil May Cry games but without the graphics or story to entertain. Batman boasted four different playable characters (Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing) for a two player co-op beat’em up game in which each character had an unlock-able set of moves meant to enhance your gameplay, but proved to be unnecessary for beating the game so it was assumed the same for “playing” the game. After reading the reviews, I promptly went out and bought a used copy from our local store. It happened to be a perfect game for my seven-year-old son and myself to play. The animation is based on Batman : The Animated series, so it appealed to both of us, but the gameplay (though lacking in story) allowed me to delve into the Mortal Kombat inspired move set while he could happily button mash his way like he was playing an old TMNT arcade game of the 90’s. Was it a perfect game? Not even close, according to the reviews, but as this video essay points out… It did find its place with a small audience to be “played correctly”. Thanks for a great video! 🙋‍♂️🎮🦇🎮👶

I've recently played again GoW3 in the ps5, after more than 5 years. As I played in a new console as new game, I didn't have chaos mode yet but I inmediatly ran to titan. And my hit was to max all as soon as possible. I realize that doing up to 100 combo and starting again was more effective than keep increasing the combo, as reaching 100 give you 60 or 65 plus orbs, and then gives orbs every 100 combos (25,30,40 and so on) which makes less orbs than first 100. Then I realised that it was more efficient restarting the combo every 100 hits than keeping it. But now I want to go again with the previous games

you MUST try the DMC V mod "Must Style". It's the cure for your problem. As the name suggests, you must reach a certain style rank to be able to DO DAMAGE to enemies. So, if you don't use everything you have and avoid being hit you literally cannot progress through the game.

Great video Kaptain!!! I’m happy for you that you found love again for the God of War franchise, as it is my top favorite as well! I too felt the same way at times with God of War (Greek Series). Once God of War (Norse Series) came out, it added a whole different playstyle like you mentioned in the video, and even had me rethinking & replaying God of War (Greek Series) ever so differently. Playing at higher difficulties FORCES you to learn the mechanics with more depth, and to genuinely use all your tools & resources at your disposal. Now this is a completely different genre, but one game I recently replayed with the genuine intent to learn & improve upon was Doom Eternal. And let me tell you, once you learn the mechanics and understand the game better, it completely changed my experience! I fell in love with it!!! Now that game literally FORCES you to learn about mechanics, weak points, weapon advantages/disadvantages, resource management, and finally, getting into the “flow-state”. And once you’re in that flow-state, it becomes an addiction lol. I highly recommend you give Doom Eternal a chance! It has now become one of my favourite games and franchises along with God of War 🔥🔥🔥

I used to despise the barbarian hammer for it's slowness until i found out ways to use it. For example near the medusa's temple there is a place where enemies spawn infinitly and are so weak i can hold them of with the hammer's souls and because the souls inflict so little damage they can build the combo meter quickly, enabling you to farm red orbs as long you don't destroy the pillars.

I played the original trilogy and fell in love. I'm not sure if the game draws attention to the combo rewards but I saw them as a kid and then tried to make every encounter at least a 100 hit combo. Then when 2018 dropped I realized (after a few playthroughs) that the combo meter is gone because Kratos has evolved and is more cautious in his approach. That's also why the game pushes so hard AGAINST rage fueled motivation and has Kratos reluctantly have to fight for the right things. I personally love all GoW. Kratos evolved the same way myths evolve. If a god can change his nature why can't you.

God If War made me come back to being a gamer with integrity. Then i went fron easy, to normal, to hard, to hardest. Since then my gaming attitude has been much better. I get my money's worth now. God of war 2 is for me a prime example how good and somewhat important unlockables can be. I used to play games only on easy and normal, but in god of war 2, you could unlock the athena skin, and I always love to play as female characters. The only way to unlock this skin though was to beat the game on it's highest difficulty, and oh boy, on this difficulty you really have to learn how to actual play the game. Well I did it, at least 3 times by now and it opened me up playing more games on their highest difficulty. Heck, I even would argue that god of war 2 and kingdom hearts 2 prepared me for bloodborne, which became one of my other fav. games of all time. That said, I still play games from time to time on normal, just to chill and have some fun, nothing wrong with that. Also as much I like the story of the new god of war game, I still prefer the classic ones. God of war 2018 I played only twice, and thats at least 2 years ago, ragnarok only once, not even bothering with all side missions and then exchanging it for some retro games on our local flea market. The classic though, specially 2 and ghost of sparta are the ones I return to at least once a year.

This video also demonstrates the interest for this gameplay style one of my oldest videos all of sudden gotten traction in the last few years and has gotten to over almost 200k views. This is one of reasons why I played god of war Ascension multiplayer, regardless of the balancing issues, it was fun fighting other players and trying to outplay your opponents, and I wish that multiplayer was further realized in the future, I wouldn't mind if they remastered the game only for the multiplayer. And further add ascension nailed down the combat, unfortunately while a lot people didn't like the story, I loved the combat. To this day I occasionally do play it once it while since the servers are still up.

To my understanding, two of the biggest actual problems with GOW Ascension's combat were - Finicky Parry move that does not feel good to use - On higher difficulties, enemies gain a lot of strength, defense and stun resistance that make it nigh unfairly difficult to build up the Special meter on the bottom right. Is that a correct assessment?

That's how I've been playing trilogy the whole time. I've been farming on enemies on combos, even when they stop giving red orbs anymore when spawning. Then I use those currency to fund my weapons to be stronger. It's more fun on hardest difficulty because of the investment.

I recently became interested in playing the series, because while I was playing other games, almost every young kid I met would say, "Duuuuuude, God of War is so awthum!!!!!" , and I wanted to know why. NOW I know why. I was missing out on an amazing 👏 cinematic style video game, with tons of action and storytelling.! 😮 so just finished the first, and going into the second iteration of the game 🎮 I hope by the time I get to GOW 3 the game lives up to my expectations, because so far, it's been a great 👍 experience.

This happen to me with Ragnarok actually I neveted cared for skill tree or armour as 2018 8 didn't need it. But with ratlgnarok I actually wanted to explore every little nook and cranny and fight bosses to keep upgrading as my skill was dependant on my armour and runics. Game got easier and manageable once I was upgrading stuff but before it was a chore to fight and I skipped wide bosses on purpose for just wanting to progress on story

Yeah I played it correctly! Beat the first three on Titan (whatever the hardest difficulty on each one was) and all the arena/special challenges. Hell, I even got a phone number to call, and will never forget hearing Kratos's voice congratulating me!

eh. on my 7th playthrough i switched to the "cow of war". i was at the section with getting the medusa head. i kept spamming posiedons rage, got that combo meter to i think 1000? either way, i was able to max all of my stats at that point. which caused me to be able to max all stats and magic as soon as i got it. i noticed that all the orb chests turned to blue chests. the game knows how to reward the player. oh and before this run, i completed the game on the hardest difficulty. that was the most difficult ending to do for me, but i got that phone number. iykyk

I've got 3 words for you: *Odin. Sphere. Leifthrasir.* It's a PS3/4 remaster of the PS2 fantasy 2D beat-em-up hack n' slash game released the same year as God of War 2 that features beautiful art and drastically reworked combat that enables truely awe-inspiring and satisfying combat. Just watch any of Kagerasimaru's character-specific combo videos to see what's possible. This game doesn't get nearly as much attention so I'm *BEGGING* you to *TRY* it if you haven't already. (Pretty sure there's a demo for it on the PS4) (Oh, and if, like me, the character's combat noises get too irritating for you, you can completely mute that part of the audio without muting character story dialogue, or the other combat noises like impacts and such.)

I was a Devil May Cry fan before I played God of War and in DMC3 I ran into the exact same thought process and that variety of play. I love this genre for it's old school arcade type feel.

My dude. This is not something you probably could have appreciated when you first played GoW. You were a kid. You knew what worked as a kid and you rinsed and repeated. How often has you seen someone do something as an adult that was so much more intrinsic than you were used to and it just clicked for you? As you get older you gain more exposure to new things, and GoW is one of those things where you were isolated to just yourself and your friends if you knew them to play the same game. You’re good dude! Enjoy and congratulations on continued learning and growth! 😊

Technically red dead redemption one is red dead revolver 2. Great video though. But yeah idk how people seem to ignore the combos. That’s the reason of leveling up the weapons they unlock better moves.

I played every action game like that because of DMC4. You can do that in FF XV and VII, KH, Tales and more. Yes you can win easily by mindlessly spamming attack but you'll be bored. I always prefer speed and defense now instead of damage to make my combo longer.

I figured this out in gow 3 u just need to play on Titan mode gives u less orbs but I was able to level up all the weapons and magic to their peak by splitting up the cost of the upgrades had to get crazy numbers with the combo meter too and one thing I noticed is towards the end of each game it shells out mad points even in the Norse games ironically though my first gow was Chains Of Olympus

People love to say you can beat game's with one button which is true the old games and the new ones but once you get into combos it makes it so much better when i become a fan of a game i go down a rabbit hole of learning everything about that game when it comes to combos and build making like in GOWR not allot of people mass with the build making when theres a ton of builds you make hell you can make a build that you can beat the whole game just by dodging lol but games have so much stuff you can learn about if you take the time to do so

The last statement is super interesting. It's so sad but actually true how much power these journalists have had on shaping the gaming industry. The gaming industry is in the shape that it is because these people who usually are terrible at games, bullied creative fun games into disappearing and praised cinematic games like there was no tomorrow. Result, every game is now a open world, story driven, souls like. Which I used to love each of these types of games but now that every game is a blend of the 3 it lost all uniqueness.
