So my buddy ‪@JakeLoosemore‬ had a gig this week and Mick from ‪@ThatPedalShow‬ was cool enough to not only sit in for some tunes, but he also let me play his rig for a couple of tunes. Obviously, Mick is not only a top bloke, but has some really awesome gear....So...How come I still sound like me?!

Flippin stellar playing and expression. I sincerely hope we get to hang out much more. Come on the show before too much longer please! Laterz geez and thanks for the shout out. :0)

I'd love to hang out more, and if you can think of a reason for me to be on the show, I'd love to, though I'm not sure I'm really on the level....Having watched (and stolen ideas from) you guys with legends like Andy Timmons, Noel Gallagher, Coxon, Landreth etc...Not sure where I fit in ha.

Hello John I’m a 72 year old intermediate guitar player and an excellent drummer. I can say from my drumming experience that once you are close to maximum development on your instrument what you play through or what instrument you use your style and sound will be undeniably be you. It has to do with your attack and timing and what’s coming out from your soul. It’s almost indescribable. Want you to know I am a fan of your playing and approach towards music and gear. You sounded a bit perplexed in this video. Always remember the hours of practice you put into becoming you. The Cordy sound. I love it. Cheers

Been playing for over 40 years. I have a guitar buddy that I geek out with over gear. There was a 10 year period where I went through a bunch of boutique amps, pedals, cabs, guitars. Every time I'd ask what he thought, he'd say, "It sounds like you". I finally decided to 'detox' from the swanky gear - moving to modelers - and ultimately to plugins. There was no point in keeping $20k worth of gear around when a few hundred bucks in plugins accomplished basically the same thing. G.A.S. can be a lot of fun, but it's also tail-chasing and a massive time-suck. If we could reclaim the time spent on reading reviews, watching demos, and hunting down deals - and instead applied that to playing - imagine how much better we'd be on our instrument. I kept my Suhr Standard and my NOC3 Pure Drive and sold everything else. I put the money into something that would provide depth and meaning to my life - liquor and prostitutes.

Mate sounds like you’ve found “your” sound. When you can play through several different kits and sound the same. Be proud, many never find theirs. Examples are endless…Andy Timmons played through Vai’s gear and sounded like Timmons, Robben Ford has played through others gear and sounded like Robben Ford. You mentioned Nuno yourself…same results. So happy for you, Jake, and Mick! Sounds like you all had a wonderful evening of expressing each self through Music! 🙏🏻❤️

Sounding the same no matter the gear is a fantastic feature of a person that reviews or even just uses different gear! It's like Ola's "will it chug?" challenge. I now think sounding the same is something that happens when you've become a master of your instrument, which despite your protests you have BTW, great live footage!

Seconded!! John can play through real amps and pedals just as well as through his modelers, he basically uses his knowledge of real world pedals and amps and cabinets and mics from years of gigging and buying and using gear to program his modeling signal chains based on what the real thing would do. I think an episode with him playing through a rig that he is informed of ahead of time, where he uses an HX Stomp or a helix and recreates the same signal chain in real time on the show and then JOHN plays through bith rigs as a demonstration of both approaches, would be epic, but i don't think it is something Dan or Mick would be interested in for a show. They both appreciate the value and convenience and validity of using modelers in certain circumstances, but is not their thing and certainly not a TPS thing.

Tone is in your hands and your head. Its a good thing that you sounded like you, and not unexpected. We tend to dial in the tone that is in our heads (even if only on the guitar controls), and "touch" has so much to do with how it sounds that it somewhat overshadows almost everything else. I try to focus more on sounding different for different songs (ie: trying to achieve the tone from the record) rather than for different gear. I am not in your league as a player, but I do alright. And my friends tell me that whether I play a Les Paul, a 335, a Tele, or a Junior through a Vox amp, Fender amp, or a modeler I always sound like me. I take that as a compliment - I guess I have "a sound". You defintely do.

Don't know about alwsys sounding like me but I was worrying a year or so ago that everything was sounding a bit the same regardless of my Tele or LP........the thing that's helped me get back to sounding different on these two has been a better understanding of the Helix thanks very much to you, this channel and your presets. As for you, you do have a definite sound but in a really good way i think, definitely not the bit blandy same sound I was suffering from. Great to see some footage of you playing live (and good in a selfish way to learn that you too suffer from nerves). Cheers!

I’ve realized vibrato is very important to me. If someone’s vibrato sucks I can’t listen to them. Yours is top notch! It’s like people forget to develop that smooth vibrato even though they can play 100 notes per second. You do seem bored. It happens. Find the fire. As a hobbiest I can just take a month off and come back fresh. That’s why I won’t turn music into a job even if I could.

Guthrie Govan once commented about performing live with Robben Ford (which he described as a religious experience for him) He said although Robben wasn't playing his own rig, but instead some flying V guitar thing and a random back line he still sounded 'exactly like Robben Ford even going through the wrong gear!' Point being, you have a unique tone and the ability to make any gear sound authentically you which is a blessing as far as I'm concerned. Keep up the good work brother.

I then see you with a beard speaking about being bored with your sound and hearing your smooth easy playing I was overcome with a bit of a doppelganger. In one of Nuno bettencourts interviews he tells the story of how he met Eddie van hallen. He was so excited to have the opportunity to plug into his rig and emulate his sound. He eventually met up and plugged into his. Rig. His outcome. He sounded like Nuno bettencourt. The way we pick, the dampening of our hands, the adrenaline that flows through your body are big variables that change the tone of your guitar. You try and sound like Brian May without a piece of metal hitting the strings. Paul Gilbert would sound less percussive with 3mm stubbies. It’s not just the eq knob on your amp that controls the tone it’s the way you connect with the strings and what material you use. One other thing to consider is that a lot of guitarists don’t want a bright harsh brittle tone, nor do they want a flabby bass tone and so there is a very small window of frequencies that most of us think as the sweet spot. Don’t forget people will and can mix up tone with signature riffs, patterns and techniques. Think about some famous guitarists , what makes a hem sound like them? I think your playing is amazing. You let the guitar breathe, you hold back and then fire when needed. You are an inspiration to all of us and show the true potential of the instrument. Ps would be great to see you play live. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this. You’ve really inspired me to become a better guitarist.

Ok here is my take on listening to the two takes. There is a difference even through the camera audio. The les Paul rig has a creamier edge to it whereas the strat rig has that typical openness strat sound. Both sound great and they both sound like you. This reminds me of Nuno Bettencourt story he always tells when he met Eddie VH at a VH stadium gig. Eddie allowed Nuno to play through his rig. Nuno didn’t sound like EVH at all and sounded like Nuno. It shows tone is majority in the fingers but gear does affect it a bit and may influence how you play and attack the guitar.

I just had a similar experience. Just played my Friday/Saturday night gigs using a friend’s Mesa Boogie F-30 because my old fender tweed was acting up at the sound check. I’d never really played one and had always seen Boogies as not really my style of amp (being more of a bright Fender type player). Set it up as a clean pedal platform and lo and behold I sounded exactly like me all weekend.

You have a very distinctive, Desirable style. Smooth technique. You use lots of slides into notes and passages. You also have an amalgamation of the Artists that have influenced you. It is essentially what Eric Johnson has done/did, to reach his distinctive style. You also have a bit of andy wood, andy timmons, you can emulate Robben Ford, Eric Johnson. And if you wanted, with your ability you could do Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, etc. just by listening to some of their legendary material, and then doing a demo of it, their sounds and techniques. Your very unique, and You have nothing to apologize for. If you are trying to break out of it, emulate, or learn new challenging techniques, like maybe emulate RJ RONQUILLIO, learn Slide Guitar, emulate Larkin Poe, or Whatever. Love the Giggin videos.

I think this one might be down to how our brains work. Think about how easily you recognize a face from lines drawn on paper; our brains are immensely familiar with our own playing and it may be impossible to unhear that when comparing how we sound on different bits of gear. Compare to when we listen to someone else do it and all of a sudden things can sound a good bit more different.

I have decided that regardless of gear I prefer tones of a certain style, and thus regardless of the gear I sound like me because I dial in similar sounds and the one thing that doesn’t change is my playing. So my suggestion as a 25 year guitar noodler is focus on the things you are weakest at and constantly try to improve. Be content with your voice because nobody else does it exactly like the way you’re going to approach it. That’s why it’s relevant because I’m gonna sound different from you and you’re gonna sound different from me but we all speak the same language.

John, those live clips were great, seeing you playing in live context, there should be more of it. I have wondered from time to time if you might ever cross paths with Mick as i’m sure i’ve heard you both reference Jake. FWIW both clips were great, that Murphy Lab sounds fantastic but oooof did that strat ever sound good through Micks rig. You seem disappointed that you sounded like you - i can’t imagine that to be a bad thing. The reality is that you often seem to use the Gramatico which is maybe not worlds away from the Two Rock?? I can assure you that when i load this preset up its still going to sound like SouthPaw335 and not JNC, so my turn to be dissapointed then ;-)

You sound great to me on all of your videos and the clip at the start of the live show with the Les Paul is first class . The only suggestion I’d make is that on the end clip it’s almost as though you’re trying for a Les Paul sound from the K Line , it sounds really smooth for a Strat type guitar . That said I have limited live experience of playing , in my youth I had an Antoria Strat and an HH 100 watt combo which I used to rehearse and sometimes couldn’t break through in the mix but when we played our one and only gig I borrowed a Laney 4x 12 to connect to the HH -it was like night and day -nice wall of sound . Even now as a pensioner haven’t gone down the pedal rabbit hole much just for home playing so can’t make any suggestions on that front . If you are happy with your style then great and experiment with gear as it becomes available to stretch out . I saw Larry Carlton play a gig in a small town hall near me and he played through a 100 watt Marshall stack , still sounded like Larry and guess his Dumble /Fender /Mesa Boogie rig was safely back in the States 😀Cheers

I tend to sound the same through most things, but I think it’s because I always have the same types of things. Blues Breaker style overdrive as my core sound, mid boost (usually a Klon, but right now I’m using the EQD Plumes) for higher gain, and then a shaper/boost for lead parts.

I think the differences are always on the margin...at least, for me, as I've gotten older. There's a 95% overlap in the tone. I sensed a thicker mid tone on the LP with the Vibroverb, but it wasn't night and day. And, that may or may not be a good thing depending on the context. We are who we are. Cordy is Cordy. Zach is Zach. Mick is Mick. Life is good.

The only thing that changes your sound, is your thought process. Gear is gear but you shape the tone. If the gear is sub-standard, it just sounds like you on a bad day. If your gear is amazing but you’re not connecting, you will only, sound as good as the mood you’re in.

Your guitar sound is not a bad thing. It is what makes you stand out from everyone else. That puts you in a spot where people can pick you out of a song and say, "Oh cool! That's Jonathan Cordy!" Just in a way we'd be able to pick out our heroes. Maybe think back on each gig and consider, "Did I turn my guitar volume down? Did I roll my tone back to get that creamer tone I like?" Instinctively, we may change our tone to match something we prefer no matter what guitar rig we play through.

Like most of us, i sound like myself through most rigs. I’ve noticed with my two rock that if I dial it in as dumbly as it can sound …and then put my Klon in front of it, the Klon erases the dumble-ness. It sounds great, maybe even better/more desirable with the Klon …but no longer dumbly. I feel like if you want to boost a D circuit you need a particularly voiced pedal like a zen drive or maybe a Gladio sc …to retain that D tone. If you move off into boost pedals like tubscreamers, bluesdrivers and Klons…the amp becomes a pedal platform. Just my take. Check out Robben Ford’s live version of ‘Peace on My Mind’ from 2007 on KZfaq. Pretty sure that’s either a Zendrive or possibly a clean boost into his tan dumble …and the D tone is there in spades. When I saw him play this song live in 2007/8 I was literally in front of him at a table by the stage. Seem to remember him kicking on the Zen for some solos. Or It *might* have been the vertex clean boost which (I think) he’d just added to his board. He used to use it some back then, now it’s just a buffer.

May sound kind of the same, but standing with 2 good tube amps behind you is something very special, that I never found with digital stuff. Hoped you would talk more about the amp in the room thing in this video, and how that experience was compared.

I love sitting in and playing through others rigs. I go in with an open mind but ultimately it’s still me playing it. Curious, people say Two Rocks are very open sounding and very very dynamic. Was that your experience of it?

The one thing I noticed about Modelling, and dialing in tones of different amps/cabs. You/Me/Anyone start to dial in sort of the same tonalitys, but it still does a tweed/Fender/marshall/vox, Dumble and then you/me/anyone start dialing it to What you like, and it then almost does not matter which Amp. I used i dialed it in to a Sound that I thought it should do. If that makes any Sense at all. But YOUR STYLE is YOU!!!

Sounds like another confirmation of ‘tone is in the fingers’. Or good gear let’s you sound like yourself. My overall take on gear and tone is that the ‘right’ gear for a particular purpose helps/ inspires you the player - at the time of playing- to be the best version of yourself and you may reach for notes, licks or textures that you simply would not do without that inspirational tone behind you. However the audience-even yourself when listening back- will not detect that much difference in the actual tone, only the quality of playing. Obviously this is based on a core tone and discounts effects that drastically alter the sound coming from your rig that can’t be mistaken or ignored!

Personally I believe that it is more valuable to have someone articulate (somehow) the responsiveness of amps and modellers. I have never much cared for what people describe as “tone” which seems to me to be about fudging and meddling with signal chain and components to find a 1-6% level of “improvement” and that “improvement” then becomes boring to the ear and “tone” chasing begins again. To me (I know this is subjective) I don’t really care about tone but I do care about how a rig gives me back the notes and the chords. I can’t describe what is it but it’s kind of not sonic but instead the millisecond speed of a note coming back after you have produced it whether softly, with vigour with fingers or pick. As shit comparison I don’t care about the colour or contours of my car but I want to know that all 4 wheels are on the ground and that when I turn the wheel the car turns how I need it to. To me my interpretation of “tone” is the finessing of something that’s not really a priority to me. My what I just is nonsense…

You’ll sound mostly like you, just as Mick sounds mostly like Mick, Dan sounds mostly like Dan, Eric Johnson sounds mostly like himself, John Mayer sounds mostly like himself etc. regardless of whatever rig you play through. I sound mostly like myself through the various rigs of my friends, both amped and modeller. Unless we play drastically different styles as demanded of session players, our phrasing and accent of notes sets us apart. If anything, I think it’s a testament to good gear that it allows the player to sound like themselves. Bad gear, I think, homogenises everything for everyone: making everyone sound the same. If I sold gear, I just want the demo person to make it sound the best in their hands. The only time I sound kinda different is when I play completely different styles from my usual, like funk or metal or “jazz” lol, but even then my legato and pull-offs can be recognised. I’d say just fully embrace our sound, unless the job demands otherwise? Hahaha…

Danish Pete, Dave Simpson, Rob Chapman, Rabea Massad, Chris Buck, Pete Thorn all have a sound that's their own pretty much no matter what they play unless they're really pushing some pedal to its extreme to demo sounds and they're all really excellent guitarists. Don't worry. Billy Gibbons has a warehouse full of guitars but makes them all sound the same on purpose when his guitar tech puts it through his rack system and no-one has ever said ZZ Top guitar sound sucks.

I've heard Tom Quayle say something similar. Trying to get out of his legato style is very difficult for him, because that feels like home I guess and he's become a master at it. In the end though, if you can play like him... or you for that matter, is that such a problem? I sound the same too, unless I do things radically different, like ditch the pick. Then its square one time.

Different gear is more inspiration than huge tonal change. Honestly it’s about the speaker and cab that’s the most dramatic change other than strat to Les Paul

I think we change our playing to sound ‘right’ so up to a point we can easily overcome differences from gear. Probably a sound decision to stop focusing on gear once you have a sound you like and have lived with it for some time. Then the gear can just be for color or trying to mimic a sound from someone who’s playing you admire.

Actually, the fact that you sound like you is very cool .. as long as you like it .. I have actually given up on the sound question altogether as I sound the same all the time and I have done for 30+ years .. sadly I don't really like it!!! Not when I listen back 😀 But the other part that you've not mentioned is the "feel", i.e., the comfort of playing that particular rig .. so I will sound the same with any combination of strat/tele/LP/toothbrsuh and Fender/Marshall/Vox but only one combination feels like "home" (LP+Marshall) .. which is what I'm looking for these days. Having said all this .. I'm no fantastic player or anything .. but I have observed as it were .. Love the live vid .. that was really cool .. would have been interesting to have it carved up and slotted into your comments (not that I want to give you loads of editing work .. 😀) Simon

I think the two rigs sounds quite different, actually! Your performance is similar, but the les paul one songs rounder and creamier and the Strat one sounds stiffer and edgier. I really like both. Two different choices.

IMHO sounding like you Jon is a good thing. Sadly I always sound like me too and that’s less good! As well as Nuno I’ve heard Steve Lukather say the same sort of thing about Geoff Beck’s rig. It kinda underlines how much of everyone’s sound is in how and what we play (although I don’t subscribe to ‘tone is in the hands). That being said I find that when I have played through others gear it can be really unsatisfactory unless you have a good amount of time to dial in sounds that give you the response, feel and sound that makes you want to play. If I am unable to dial it in I tend to get back from it a more generic sound and I tend to play in a ‘safer’ well tried and tested way (ie more like me) rather than being inspired to be more expansive and creative. This is particularly the case when you step in for a song or two rather than having a whole gig to warm up.

I knida know where you're coming from. I'm pretty much a bed room player and never played a lot or at all with other people or through a lot of gear. anyway me and my mate have started going to a rehearsal space once a week for a jam and basically be able to play loud. Each room generally has different amps and so I've started to play through different amps now and what I have noticed is that with a little bit of knob twiddling I ultimately sound like me at the end of the day regardless of what amp I play though. I'd like to add that I'm not really colouring much of my sound with pedals either

I can't help but think that John should be playing with the likes of *Snarky Puppy.* Clearly, they're a US based band and John lives in England, but if that were ever to happen it would be cool. There again, there are some great UK based bands and musicians - *Jacob Collier,* for example. If John is getting bored that's a sure sign he needs to be playing with other uber-talented musicians in order to keep the inspiration flowing...

This is an essential issue. Gain staging. I find too much gain is usually the problem. It’s mostly about touch sensitivity and feel. In the end the tone is more to inspire you. The audience is more inspired y your playing…your soul.

Without looking, I think the LP and the K-Line sound quite distinct. I wonder if the biggest difference in the overall tone might come from your dynamics, and attacking the notes slightly differently on each instrument? The humbuckers probably get you to that sweet spot of breakup a little earlier, so you lean in a little less than on the K-Line? Just pondering really, could be nothing to do with it but it's something I'm thinking about as I tend to end up making any guitar/pickup combo sound the same. It's like I've got a built in compressor in my brain that makes me dig in more/less to get basically a uniform sound at all times, regardless of gear. I feel similar to you, in that I think I want to hear a bit more of the variation when I play my different guitars. It's going to take a bit of self-coaching and a mindset change from me but I feel like it's worth exploring. I hope you get to a good place with it - the playing as always is spectacular!

10:32 increasingly I’m thinking about what the different guitar needs in order to speak with greatest expression. Whilst focusing on that element, I have - rightly or wrongly - disregarded the rest of the rig. Be interested to hear your thoughts on that? The waffle above notwithstanding, it’s worth pointing out that the level of communication you achieve through your playing more than makes up for the simple ‘you sound like you’ as it were. Ham fisted idiots like myself playing the same licks on different instruments is one thing. Players with the knowledge and technical capacity such as yourself still speak. Your (and Mr Taylor’s for that matter) musical expression is more than getting expected ideas and sounds from the gear - it’s a voice. Gear makes the world go round. Musical expression makes the journey an enjoyable experience. Players like you bring the joy as far as I’m concerned.

I'm not so sure it's such a bad thing to sound the same, whatever gear you're using. Jimi Hendrix could pick up a flying v and make it sound pretty similar to a Strat on occasions.

The funny thing is, when Mick plays through the Two Rock, it just sounds like a Fender to me, in fact, he manages to make a lot things sound wide and open. Whatever you play through sounds Dumble-ish to me, with distinct mid-forward sustain.
