Honestly I think they changed it to private servers because on the internet anything classed as VIP is hidden behind a pay wall so a free VIP server wouldn't make sense. I also don't think they should have allowed free private servers because for a good while private servers had been these exclusive things that give the user more control such as admin commands, special features or choosing when events happen that would only happen in VIP servers. Luckily not many games actually have free Private Servers but it honestly just takes away from their essence.
