I think you need to start your turns from the bottom corner of the yoke to prevent the arm crossing

I have a yoke. If u wanna drive with one hand. Try this. For right turns, left hand on bottom left corner and turn with your palm. For left turns. Hand cupping top left side of yoke and turn. Very easy and comfortable once u get used to it. If u wanna drive with 2 hands on top. Cup both top nipples of yoke with just your fingers. The weight of your hand will just pull down on yoke. Feels comfortable to me. I use to be a one handed 12 o clock driver for 30+ years. I got used to the yoke in like an hour.

Can you please provide info on as to where to purchase , price etc? Unless maybe you want to sell that one. Also do you find yourself using the Hansshow screen more so than the Tesla screen now?

Before I bought my 2024 Model S less than a month ago, I test drove a Model X with the yoke wheel. I noticed (1) the lower left corner was beginning to fray, (2) the distance of the yoke from my thigh would prevent me from holding it with my thigh If I momentarily needed to free up both hands, (3) unlike a conventional steering wheel, the yoke is asymmetric, so if your head is turned backwards to reverse, you have to be aware of how the steering wheel is positioned when moving your hands around it, (4) it looked cool, but not when it easily disintegrates with usage. For these reasons, I stuck with the conventional wheel. Thank you for keeping it real and for channeling Matthew Perry.

I installed my new yoke for my model y 2020 and now it’s showing steering wheel scroll buttons and horn unavailable. Service required to restore functionality. I did not disconnect the 12v battery when installing and I believe that’s why the error code popped up. Now my horn doesn’t work or the scroll wheels. Can you help!?

Should use single/double finger in interior corners to make turns over 50% wheel turn. Also I place my hand on exterior bottom left (not interior) for Autopilot. Therefore wouldn't be any different for yoke

Hey! you know if there is any safety risks with the airbag by installing a yoke on the model 3? Franz said in a recent interview that the most challenging thing about the yoke of the Plaid was to redesign the airbag since the yoke doesn't have the top part of the steering wheel. please let us know your thoughts. thanks so much!

Great video! Everything is a trade off and your video is a great demonstration of that. I also tend to do the "top of wheel" rest with my hand. That said, doing that is one of the least safe things you can do while driving...so... Another thing I haven't seen addressed - I have found that when entering the car I will actually grab the wheel as I sit down (at thew top) and can already see how that would be a change I would have to get used to. I never really thought about this until I started to consider getting the yoke. Looks like you have since removed the yoke based on your newer vids, so it must not have won you over (?)

Not 100% sure. I love mine and won’t be going back so everyone’s mileage varies I guess. If anything I now find getting into a car with a round wheel as odd. Haha. 👍

They have an inverted trapezoid design for the yoke as well. I think I would prefer that since its a bit more compact

The downside with that would be hand slide while holding onto the sides. I don't think it would feel as natural.

After driving my Plaid for nearly a year, yoke needs improvements, 1) turn signals n emergency lights should relocate to both thumb tips or index tips at back of handle ber, double press for blinks. 2) horn button should go back to traditional center 3) steering yoke could shrink size by 2 inches, lower right corner blocks lower left screen a bit 4) eliminate lower horizontal bar cuz they do noting

I wonder if the steering settings need to be changed to have fewer turns lock to lock? Or perhaps a non-linear arrangement - so initially minimal change of direction but when yoke is turned through 90 degrees max turn is engaged? Or perhaps speed related so at slow speed a small rotation of yoke give much bigger turn of the car.

Bingo! It needs to be variable. At low speeds the steering ratio would change.

Exactly! You can’t just slap a yoke on there and call it a day. Steering ratios need to be adjusted to suit the new yoke. Variable would be ideal. Should be easy to do by reprogramming the drive-by-wire software.

Terrific video, your first take on a very different feeling control. I’ll be interested to see how/if your reaction to the yoke changes as you put in more time using it. When I first sat in a Model 3, my initial reaction to the interior was immediately positive. The lack of buttons, sliders, knobs, and dials that festoon the dash/steering wheel, doors, and center counsel of current cars - nearly all M3’s controls moved to the center screen - was such a huge plus in my book. “Why hasn’t it always been like this?!” I asked. It hasn’t changed at all during the ownership of my car. I get the feeling from watching numerous drivers document their reaction to the yoke that no one sits down, grabs hold of it, and has that initial sense of euphoria to it. Some talk about how they “get use to it” after awhile. That seems to be about the best they can give. That old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind.I also wonder if the majority of race car drivers, drivers who demand a lot of control of their cars, use yokes in either their work or family cars. Pilots do use yolks (along with many other ways to control the movement of their aircraft), but I wonder if they all have yokes in their cars. Anyway, Cody, great video and thanks for giving this a real test and a chance to see how it works (or doesn’t) for you over time.

Thank you for the detailed comments Ernest! I doubt race car drivers or pilots would like this becasue of the reason many others have mentioned. A proper yoke wheel turns 180 degrees for a full turn not 360 like this is doing.

I put a yoke in my LR Highlander and it is superb. Near my home, every day I go through a windy gorge with 6 hairpin bends and it is exhilarating with the yoke. Very sporty. After only a few days, I do keep reaching for a phantom wheel at the top but after 50 years of driving with a conventional wheel that's going to happen, for a while. I'm not going back though.

Funny, I've got a white / white P3, same 10.25 Hansshow display, yoke - carbon fiber with alcantara - cancelled my S plaid as I'm now happier with this new update that changes the whole feel of the car... positively... saved a bunch of dough...

You won't find out how you adapted to the steering wheel until your first emergency maneuver when you need more the half a turn on the wheel. If you hands are used to grabbing the top of the steering wheel to counter steer such as a car fishtailing then the yoke won't work. And those situation happens fast, you won't have time to think, I'll grab the side of the yolk and twist my arms/hands to counter steer.

it is a great danger, also one of the reasons the steeringwheel is round because you can grab and grip it "from all angles" when the car spins or loses control.. try that with a yoke

You totally skipped the part of taking out the core and the airbag clip bar and transferring to the yoke. That is the hardest part. Did you intentionally leave that out for some reason or did you happen to find a yoke that comes with all that included in it as that would make the install about 75% easier if there is a yoke that comes that way ?

thank you you for the video definitely getting one but do you have some takes on U-turns and low speed driving on the difficulty like is it comfortable, Is it easier, or you can get used to it. and I think you can try to do turns or U-turns one-headed if you agree on that.

It is definitely not easier to turn with but it's not hard either. You can find a place to spin the wheel one handed for U Turns but it will just take some getting used to.

I have a MS on order since April, hopefully will have it by November, I'm sure I'll get used to the yoke but I doubt I'll actually like it. There's a reason cars have used round steering wheels for over a hundred years.

I agree with you completely. Also, I cannot throw enough shade at Tesla for having touch-sensitive buttons for gear selection and not activating them unless and until the screen fails or is removed. I used to want a Model X 100D but that was until I heard that the refreshed Model S and Model X units now have a steering yoke.

@@scratchpad7954 I heard the same thing about the capacitive touch gear selection buttons not working unless the screen is disabled/broken but several reviewers have shown that they work all the time--regardless of the screens state. I have also seen several mention that a round wheel IS actually available "off menu" meaning it doesn't show up in the design studio options but if you ask your Tesla rep they can manually add it to your configuration. No idea if there is any price difference.

@@genephipps6421 Wow! I actually leaped with joy when I heard that. Does that mean that the buttons are backlit? Most media I have seen online of those gear selection buttons were taken during broad daylight, so we wouldn't have seen any backlighting yet anyway. I'm sure they would have to keep the emergency flasher button active regardless of display functionality as that is a safety feature if a Tesla were to decide to randomly turn itself off on the highway.

Could you please tell me why my brand new Model Y , with FSD, doesn't;t have the latest software already loaded on my new Tesla. The software is :2021.3.106 ? Is there something I have to do to get the latest download? Thank you

This is very common Neal. First make sure you have your updates set to "Advanced". You should get an update within a week or so after. If not then contact a service center and they can push you an over the air update.

Sir, I ordered a yoke steeling wheel with your link and even used your discount code but didn't receive a confirmation email from them. They sure did take the money out of my account . I don't have a car with a yoke steering wheel, but if I had I would try using a steering ball on the yoke they are cheap and worth trying imo.

Thank so much for the review. I don't think your we being too bias. we are all Bias in some form, we have all been driving with a round wheel so that makes sense. But After watching your video I don't think I will jump in and grab one of these wheels. Thanks a bunch!

I think its just something you need to get used to. I seen other people using the yoke pretty smoothly.

I also believe the Plaid has a different software which make it turn more so it's less awkward on tight turns.

Probably made the steering ratio adjustment at the factory since it’s steer-by-wire. Similar to the new Lexus RZ450. Much less rotation and safer.

Your best video ever! I think possibly on auto it’s not such a big deal, but more disadvantages than pros on balance. But the big no-no - which you didn’t have to grapple with - is if the stalks have gone. Tesla lost the sticker some time ago -“If it ain’t bust, don’t…” well, we all know the rest.

Thank you i watched your video just for this reason to get an opinion on the yolk steering. Our X is coming January 2022 and I think it is coming standard with the yolk whether you want it too or not. I am on the fence. Even on KITT (Knight Rider) it was cool but didnt seem practical or you would end up kneeing yourself and crashing. Another video I watched the guy seemed ok but he was driving in the burbs and light driving, not really performance driving, I feel you get it up too speed you might not be able to corner in time if you catch a curve wrong!? I guess you can get use to anything as you say

The reason most KITT replica steering wheels suck is because they aren't weighted properly (they just make them out of plastic most of the time). If you actually make one properly, so it weighs what a real steering wheel does, the KITT style yoke is actually fine.
