Ok so top suggestion is raising the front legs. I like that because I would like the option to make the piano flat again so it’s an optional tilt. The water will weight around 120kg and most of it will push on the back leg of the piano. So how about strenghening the back leg like this? imgur.com/a/R4RcEJF If I calculated correctly. The piano needs to be raised 10cm. It might not sound like a lot those 120kgs of water. But from touching this piano a lot I realised that it’s not a very heavy piano, I’d say it’s only 250kg so those 120 is quite a lot for a non enhanced third leg

How about pulling the hardware off of a "Standing desk" like one from Ikea that can raise and lower. You would have to check the weight capacity, but that might be easier than designing a system from scratch

Keep in mind the forces on that back leg if you do this. Not only total force, but you'll be introducing a torque which those legs were probably not designed for.
@cdahmke112 жыл бұрын
I had the same idea.
@spencer9612 жыл бұрын
The piano’s legs are meant to hold in compression. 100 percent of the force is compressing the legs at 90° to the ground, but if you tilt the legs even a little bit, they need to be reinforced to handle a lateral load. Just a few degrees of tilt will make a rotational moment where the legs connect to the piano, and the more weight they hold the larger this problem becomes. Not to mention you’re gonna add a lot of weight in water. My recommendation would be to machine some angle offset spacers where you remount all three legs. The spacers ensure the legs sit flat on the ground and exactly vertical. This way you don’t have to worry about them snapping off.

Never thought I'd be surprised to see piano strings on piano in a title I love how it's looking so far, it looks fantastic! You really went all out for this one, that's huge! For the tilting, maybe you can make the two front legs higher instead of the back leg lower Even putting two wooden boxes underneath them would help

Car floor jack instead of third leg. Just put a strong plate on the bottom of the piano for it to push on. This allows you to easily raise and lower the piano to the desired perfect height. And should have no issues supporting the weight.

The easiest thing to do may be to block up the other two legs, rather than shortening the one. This could look like some small blocks, or a platform for both the back legs and the piano bench.

I have three suggestions: 1. Duplo-tier: Put the piano on a ski slope for kids (not too steep). 2. LEGO™-tier: Tilt your house, Biltema has 2T garage jacks that could do this (you know how many you need). 3. Engineer-tier: accelerate the piano to about 28500 km/h and pitch it to the desired angle before filling it with water.

I would have the strings will not vibrate in the water to make the sound, you should have them resting just MM above the water so that way you still get the watery sound submerging strings will not get a sound. Also for adjusting the legs, if you use that metal brace you showed, and you put weight on it, that should stabilize it since it will add pressure to the structure. Gravity and weight would keep that from wobbling Can't wait for the final video to come out on this project and hear what it sounds like
@NikoDood2 жыл бұрын
What if you cut off the legs entirely, and set it on a table that is rated to hold 400 kg. You could also cut some blocks of wood to the angle that you want the piano at, and then screw those pieces into the table. This way the piano would be tilted and the weight would be supported by vertical legs.
@MattiasKrantzshorts2 жыл бұрын
I’m reading some comments about lifting the front legs. That would be awesome. However the piano is very front heavy, and that back leg looks weak and wouldn’t it be even more comprimised in an angle plus the extra weight of the piano getting shifted back? Also don’t forget about the added weight of the water😳 I do have an engine lift btw (2 tones) maybe I can suspend the back of the piano? But I don’t like how visible that solution would be EDIT: i did a rough calculation, it will be around 100-120 liters of water and most of it at the back of the piano

I definitely think you should reinforce that back leg, or like add two legs on either side of the back leg to make it a 5 legged piano. It would be so sad if you made this piano and filled it with water just for the back leg to collapse

@isayawhaat16342 жыл бұрын
Maybe with tilting the piano you could make some sort of compartment that holds water at the end of the strings to keep the water in one spot and so you can have water at the end of all the strings ⬇️⬇️⬇️ how you might be able to do it is: if you make the back leg shorter so the piano is tilting and then underneath of the strings closer towards the bottom you can make a block that lines the entire piano following the strings and then another block above the strings to hold the water in

Depending on how sturdy that back leg is, you might want to add some safety precautions. If you raise up the front legs, the back leg would be at an angle(even if slight). Then you add water witch adds even more weight. I could see the back leg fail. Thoughts from a piano technician.
@danismynewname2 жыл бұрын
If you end up propping up the front legs, it might be good to also angle the back leg so it doesn't add too much stress to the joint on the inside angle. you don't want it snapping.

What about a scissor lift jack? It could be mounted on wood or something large to stabilize the bottom then raise and lower the jack at your will. Not sure of pressure ratings but some different kinds are used to hold up rvs. You also could buy a replacement leg for the piano and remove the height needed to lower the piano 15 degrees. Only issue I forsee with this is matching the stain.

you might be able to put some sort of like jack or similar crank that you pump to adjust the height of the back, maybe even just simply having pre-determined rungs you manually lift the piano off of to lower or raise. as for the normal leg, unless you want to manually reinstall it each time, could be cool if it just folded out, then you had separate legs for lowering it down. You'd still probably have to manually lift the back of the piano though.

You want to submerge the strings? Wouldn't the vibrations in the water cause the other strings to vibrate? Or would the water act as a dampener? Then the only sound you'd get would be a muffled, muted sound from the air above water? I did not study much physics haha If you plan to keep the water in there, maybe use actual pool (chlorinated) water so it doesn't grow bacteria or mold or other gross stuff
@thorsteinj2 жыл бұрын
Vibrations on other strings (and the piano body itself) always happen, even through air. That's why there are dampers, and these are left in place on the strings not played. The string would have a harder time to vibrate because of the resistance of the water, but the vibrations that do translate into the liquid (water) would perhaps be more easily reflected in other strings? I just assume the dampeners would take care of that. However, the dynamics of the water might tend to the harmonics of the string, which would intuitively be more pronounced in the harmonics of other strings? I guess it also depends on the attack, maybe it would be very different depending on how hard you play? From an harmonics point of view it is just really interesting to figure out if any of the harmonics on the strings would be cancelled or amplified due to it being submerged. Maybe it would only affect some strings and ... will the timbre change, would it even sound like a piano? Will it sound partially like a piano? I have so many questions!

Whatever you do to the legs, make sure they are physically attached to the piano. You don't want the piano to just be "sitting" on top of a surface, because if it slips off... you could be seriously injured by such a heavy object. Also it would probably crack the piano frame. Also you might die.

I would suggest adding 2 more legs to the back of the piano, the only problem would be getting them to match the original leg. You could essentially just taper them, and give them a stain and top coat. Try to install them a way you can easily uninstall them when the piano is empty, to keep the original look. If all else fails just Google a local carpenter 😅
@mcgoojr2 жыл бұрын
Do not add a fourth leg, the three-legged configuration guarantees a flat plane without rocking or wobble. Adding a fourth leg could introduce wobble during piano use.

Adding other legs for more support seems good, also maybe putting a wider base under the legs, like if the leg is 5 cm wide, having a 20- 50 cm wide block under that leg could help lower the weight on said leg. So the leg sits above the block, and the block has a hole for the leg to interlock. I hope this makes sense hahaha you can even make the bottom of that block non slip by using a hot glue gun. Good luck
