I'm glad you gave a realistic summary of how the airline industry works. Many fail to understand this is a seniority based industry. In the beginning, you dont have the life you will have later down the road. If you have family issues that require time and attention, this job can be a huge challenge.

I was a flight att for 42 years-left during covid-did not want to-but in retrospect it was the only time ever that our airline offered buyout of any substance. You must realize that you are just a number to management--keep y nose clean and realize that its like the military-you belong to them! Todays job since covid is much harder-you develop a tough skin-you have to! But you do develop, character, patience, good habits to last a lifetime-like being on time-YOU WILL BE ON TIME! And some nice people y meet along the way! You will love it and y sometimes will hate it but it will make a different person! And eventually--hang in there-you Will see Paris and many other places!!❤😮

I'm a FA for an international Scandinavian company - in my 5 years I've never been called the B word or had passengers that disrespect me badly. Advice for future FA - choose your company wisely - some companies really do respect your private life, makes a great scheduling and allows you plenty time to rest plus gives you fantastic layovers. I’m a captain at a regional. I enjoyed hearing your stories. I give you all a lot of credit for what you have to juggle in the course of your day. We have separate set of problems and us pilots have the luxury of being closed off from the passengers, but good flight attendants are worth their weight in gold. I appreciate y’all

It can be a fun job at times but like any job it's not perfect! Life is what you make it!

FA now hitting 34 years. every one needs to pay there dues on this job. The main reason I have lasted is because I have always remained single and my dad always thought me to survive as he was a survivor of the Holocaust in Europe, I wish people would think about this before they apply. It took me 1 year before I could see my parents.

It’s been 8 years for me and I’m about to throw the towel in. Grateful for the opportunities but this phase in my life is over. So much resistance and my health is literally deteriorating. Im exhausted ALL the time. This is not in alignment with my current life ma path. Thanks for sharing!

Hi, I left a post last week off my phone which was not working properly. I am on my computer now and I would like to clearly state what I posted. I am not sure if my information is help full here. I would just like to give people that are Flight Attendants or want to be a Flight attendant a clear understanding of the reality of the lifestyle (job) I don't wish to discourage any one however I feel people need to hear the truth. I have been doing this since 1987 started at 19 I am now 55. . In my day training was abusive and we did not use computers. I was on the phone crying to my parents who I recently lost. First off reserve is a PAIN... especially when you're coming off a 3-day trip or 6 flights and your pager (phone has to be on for scheduling or duty manager to call) until a certain time. Airport reserve is impossible as many know. And back then we did not have testing. We all relied in house phones or pay phones, and we had a public airphone located next to 2-R on every aircraft. Why 2-R? I don't know. This is a lifestyle. In the beginning you're going to hate it. Long hours jet fatigue, not seeing family and having people think that you stood them up on dates. You can't always communicate. If you're stuck on the plane let's, say for 4 hours (yes it happens) and you're in Dallas but your dinner date is waiting at the restaurant in San Francisco- then you will have much explaining. Unfortunate people might let that slide e once Maybee twice, but eventually get frustrated and feel you are playing games and not want anything to do with you. So will family. It got so bad that it caused me years of estrangement. What it comes down to is what do you really love in life. For myself being a Flight Attendant is my life. It's not glamorous or what people thing. Just cleaning human waste and lavatory's seats, can be so gross you will feel like a over glorified low-end janitor when you worked so hard to get those wings. Your life will mostly be at your base and in hotels around the world. My advice is to learn and seek exciting things in the location you are based at. You will be forced to actually make friends in that location and on your trips. Back in the day when I was a young hot looking boy with a nice body lol. sorry im just being honest. I was center of attention. I went to clubs worth the crew and stayed up all night to make my flight in 2 hours. Dinner in Montreal and lunch dinner in Seattle next day. I lived a party lifestyle and I mean it was a party with punish meant simultaneously! I was almost dismissed from training and terminated. However, I was given a final warning. They know I was immature because of my age but was a good flight attendant. My manager even said to someone else I over hared that I will outgrow it. So as you age you won't have many opportunities as you once did to go on dates and keep I.T with family as they in my case broke up. Get used to spending much time alone weather your young or older, especially older. Yes, it gets depressing at my age to spend holidays Christmas or thanksgiving eating Dennys alone in my hotel room. I remained single most of my life and am committed to being single. I had a 5-year relationship with my partner, and he could no longer put up with me being away so long and being so exhausted I could not get on a plane imidatly on my first day off and take him to Hawaii or Paris... Aside that... management is abusive and wants you to stay on duty regardless of if someone passes away... I recall one time we had a trip to chili and a man was going crazy on board... as we had a mechanical problem . We stopped in RIO, and we thought they would terminate the flight because of all that drama; however, we were forced to remain on duty. Disciplinary action was taken against a Flight Attendant that refused could not continue that trip. So many things can happen. Good news is if you make it past 5 years (hang in there!) the job will get easier, and bidding will get easier along with holding that dream line! The more seniority the better. More money line holding less work it becomes a vacation! you need to pay your dues. Good luck to everyone and dont gives up try not to quit we all go through it.

It’s not everyone. I absolutely agree with your reasons. However, I like the job as an FA. I came from a 9-5, and can’t go back to a 9-5. Your reasons are so true though.

I'm with you girl I'm tired of it too. Same deal for me taking a mental break bc its just too much and I'm exhausted. I don't think they understand how tiring the job really is..... You can literally be up for over 17 hours! It's sad...

@theteawithtara May I ask, is it easy to trade or drop trips at your airline? Is there any minimum hours to fly in order to keep the travel benefits? How many years you have to fly in order to be retired with full travel benefits?

I have been a Fa for 10 years. Those are the daily struggles of dealing with people! You learn how to deal. I love my job. But it’s not for everybody…. It is hard.

Ive been looking of getting a job in an airline company not necessarily a flight attendant because of the long hours and the traveling but looking to work at customer service desk like an agent?? Im 55 years old was recently laid of my banking job and ive always wanted to be a flight attendant I have heard the same horror stories from friends and just solidifies not wanting to be a flight attendant especially at my age. I dont think I can do it and put up with customers like that! I worked in customer service at a bank and we also had nasty customers too! That would call us names all because we are following policy! But as a flight attendant I feel it worse plus your on an entire flight with them. We would call the lolice to get them removed from the premises and be done with that! Sometimes the company would shut down their accounts for treating employees like crap and we wouldn't have to see them again! They didnt tolerate behavior like that!

I'm a former FA and identify with alot of what you talked about. I'm just curious, in the situation you mentioned about the guy wanting the beer on the short flight, if you would have sold him a beer, would you have gotten in trouble?

1. I love working weekends & having weekdays off 2. I tried working 9 to 5 once. It felt like a waste of my life. Same shit, different day. 3. I live 30 min away from one of the busiest airports in the US 4. I’m single, own my house, have money in the bank & I have a flexible side job that I can work in a hotel room whenever a client hires me 5. I got hired a CJO in the spring but turned it down due to a quicker turnaround than I was expecting so I’m reapplying next month now that timing works out

I totally agree with her and how these customers act but just for reference I work for a low-cost carrier for a while and then I was offered a position with American unfortunately being the largest airline in the world or in the United States that is their Union contract is only paying $12.08 an hour in one of the most expensive places in the country. Needless to say I went to another carrier at a airport closer to where I live 20 minutes vs 1 hour for the other airport for far more money and I do have to say no matter which airline you work for you are going to get customers like this and sometimes you have to smile and wave but there are times and protocols / FAA in. That must be followed. When I worked for my other airline I did pull people off planes for calling my agents nasty words I did give them an opportunity and they proceeded to curse at me and I basically told him hey you have two options get off this plane or go to jail. And they acted like they were the victim so I totally get where she's coming from and I don't see why people act like this in public it is totally unnecessary there worse than children

Being a flight attendant isn’t made for anyone

For smelta, is there a minimum you must fly no matter seniority? Can you drop trips without penalty? I’m hoping to only fly < 10days/month and want to know how realistic that is..? I’m not concerned about income just wanting to know if I’ll be able to have that control over my schedule where I can work how many days/trips I desire. I know there are reserve days but like for the other trips.. can those be dropped?

Apply for cabin crew if you really need a job not because you want to travel or whatever reason, then you can work your way up or out, it's actually what you make of it and it's different strokes for different folks and it is challenging and limiting time wise 😉 but the money is good

As a nurse who's every work day is a twelve hr day; with most turning into a fourteen or sixteen hr shift, I do understand the exhaustion that back-to-back long shifts bring. This pandemic has required all of us in healthcare to have extremely high patient loads, so lunch or breaks are generally not in sight most days. But, at the end of the day, my patients and their health and well being are all things I swore in my nursing hippocratic oath to be wholly dedicated to. Long story short, I knew what I signed up for. I'm a sympathetic to what your situation was, simply because I'm not so sure that airlines do prepare individuals to know exactly what it is they are in for. However, I lost a bit of this sympathy when you tell us that you did go into this knowing you'd be a commuter. Adding a five/six hour commute to every trip you take is nearly an entire work day for most people. When you tell the airline your willing to live in base, and then choose not to, then that's on you, not them.

You definitely justified leaving the job. It can be such a dangerous job.

Hi hun your video is interesting my name is Brett I have been a flight attendant with the world's largest carrier since 1987 I'm now 56 years Young and to this day I enjoy my career very much when I was younger I partied I went through all that good stuff over the past 10 years I've pretty much settled down it's layover just go to the hotel isolation LOL back to my flight there is a period 10 years ago I was strongly considering quitting point being as I never really had family after the age of 25 30 and I did miss the boat on getting married although I make good mony and I work one flight a week it pays off your story is interesting I just think of more people would give it more time and realize that as you grow older the things that are there for us when we're young disappears automatically they are harder to obtain such as kids family dates yearly impossible and we kind of grow into being a hermit LOL I'm not trying to sound negative at that point the job really takes over and there's such an appreciation for your inner self and the people that you take care of everyday my point of this is that your story is interesting I appreciate it I however wish there was a way more people out there would give it more time because this is a great career this is a great lifestyle but the thing is unfortunately you don't feel that wellness everything I've talked about as far as money and just being in touch with yourself and true joy and true love of life and the career until you work for at least 20 years I'm being totally honest so as I've heard similar explanations both as a supervisor and recruiter of why people quit and your video is interesting thank you for sharing it... I’ve always dreamed of being a flight attendant, i’ve been preparing myself for sooo many years and I finally applied to my dream company, everything is going well so far with my application but i’ve been watching so many videos about ex flight attendants and most of them are quite negative :( seems like most companies treat them like sh*t and I don’t even know how their bodies resist for so long 😭 I don’t know how to feel about it, my dream kinda crashed before I even got into it. Honestly I think one of the things that I'm not trying to get too personal but one of the main reasons I've lasted this long on the job is because I am a gay man both a gay flight attendant and a gay man even though I look real good in my age of 56 LOL and I was always very attractive when I was younger the cards go in a different direction if you're in this lifestyle it's more of a singular thing that's why that is a main reason gay males e homosexual make excellent flight attendants ! orgive me for being so straight forward I've been doing this long enough and at my age I'm pretty bold LOL there are times I even walk up to the director of training and the operations supervisor and I give them a piece of my mind LOL they love me I love you and I love you all thanks. I feel like you may sound ungrateful. I am so sorry if that offends you but to me, you sound rude. I’ve been applying nonstop to that same airline, I’ve been praying to every God and universal being in the world, I’ve been learning a third language for my future flight attendant career, i studied mechanical engineering for 5 years and stopped studying when I realized my passion is in the aviation industry, and I’ve been heart broken over and over again after every rejection. There’s so many people like me that would love the job you gave up. I am glad you are happier truly I am ♥️

You quitting because of your personal issues with your son is fine. However, everything else you’re complaining about is nothing. Delta is straight forward and honest about how it is your first couple of years. You have to put in your time first. You knew all of this before you got the job. Hard as it is to land a FA position with Delta, and you accepted the position wasting time when someone else could have had your spot. Sounds like you’re just someone who’s not used to hard work. Customer Service is not an easy industry and it can be mentally draining. Like, you didn’t know this?! This entire video sounds like you’ve never worked a day in your life. Like, you literally sound like you didn’t know things like this happens in customer service. What in the world!!

Did you not do any research on the job before you decided to apply for it?there's hundreds of flight attendants on KZfaq alone who tell the pros and cons of the job and every single point here is gone over by them multiple times,the 18 hour days are your choice,you made the choice to live out of base,this is all knowledge you would have had if you did even 10 minutes research.you sound like you felt the job was beneath you once you were hired.
