Joen, I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear that you are making a conscious decision! I had told you my boyfriend‘s in a nursing home well that’s where he will be for the rest of his life for his alcoholism. He’s only in his 50s. I know you’re young, but you age quicker if you’re an alcoholic. I can’t wait to watch you both lead a healthier lifestyle. Find the root of your anger and upset. It should not be directed towards anybody else. Love you both.❤❤❤❤❤

Im sorry about his situation. It demands self-awareness and a true desire for wanting to change. Most people wouldn’t admit they even have a problem bc living very unhealthy is so normalized in todays world. Maybe send him my ayahuasca video? Thats what started my road to sobriety! ♥️

I am so sorry about your boyfriend. You've shared good advice. I also know a person who ended up in nursing homes because of alcoholism. He was only in his 50's as well... in his case it caused Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which is a form of dementia. It's heart-breaking to see people we love drink their lives away. My sister has stopped drinking, after 45 years of heavy drinking (since she was 13), but there is permanent damage.

Good for you!! I work in ICU and Man... Patients in withdrawal is one of the saddest things. Alcoholism is a disease... your body creates an awful dependence to alcohol, literally when you stop is like depriving your system of breathing. Imagine how intense it gets that you get admitted to ICU.

I know so many people who would say they wanna stop smoking or drinking or both but keeps putting it off not realising that its their addiction (like a security blanket) that are keeping them from making a change…. So liberating when you actually do get to that point…. So much more freedom when you dont need to have a smoke or a drink to be happy!

Thank you for such a candid honest video, so down to earth and raw. Well explained by real people. My wife and I have been following you since the beginning and really enjoy your content. The topic of alcohol is not an easy one however you both nailed it perfectly and I’m 100% positive that this video will help many of your followers who are knowingly or unknowingly going down that same slippery slope. We are also transitioning to Portugal and want to enjoy a healthier lifestyle there and appreciate all your information including this video. Obrigado Manuel and Carol.

First, yes to the cooking channel. I still use 3 of your recipes that I love! Joen, however this journey works for you... what ever it takes... I hope you stay the course and really get to know AND love yourself deeply. You appear to have a lot of preconceived ideas around drinking... and I imagine a lot of that was what you've convinced yourself of. Like another commenter, I know of someone who ended up in a nursing home in his 50's because of his alcoholism... ended up with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, an early onset dementia. So sad, he died far too young. We all know the stories of people who've destroyed their lives and others. My sister is an alcoholic... started drinking when she was 13. Her body is wracked with problems BUT she quit last summer after more than 45 years of heavy drinking. She got to the point (FINALLY) of being afraid for her life. She's lost great jobs, our family cottage and many friends because she never outgrew the drinking. She resorted to stealing... I'm grateful she is doing better. My first husband started drinking heavily and would sometimes pick fights with me when he would come home in the middle of the night drunk. One time it was so out of hand I asked him to leave me alone because I needed to sleep because I had to get up early for work the next day. He lost control and I was black and blue. The only time in my life a man has ever laid hands on me like that. I left him (of course). I wasn't going to let that happen again. I've personally seen the anger, the grief, the loss because of it and none of those things are worth it. Be healthy and be happy. No more preaching... just simply care and share. Big hugs to you both!

Well done on breaking the habit, dude. Doing that in Portugal / Madeira is probably harder than most other places as well. I've managed to make it less of a life feature thankfully. Love the spring water idea! We distil water, re-mineralise, charge and speak some positivity into our drinking water. Though, I think it'd be good to mix that up with some spring water also. Do you have a little checklist for water source selection? As in, collecting only from springs at a certain altitude, or emanating from a certain type of grassy spring, for example? It's simple, but game-changing!

Congratulations, Joen, and thank you for sharing your experience. We are meant to grow & develop and we cannot do that without taking a brutally honest look at ourselves from time to time. This takes courage and you have clearly taken a courageous step forward in your life. Do you keep a journal? I'm in my mid-50s and when I was younger I kept a diary, now and then. It's fascinating to reread what I wrote 15, 20, or 30 years ago because I am such a different person today. When I look back, I am happy to say that I have no regrets and feel I made the most of my youth - chiefly because I faced my fears. I also liked how you thanked God for your blessings. We are both material beings, as well as spiritual. So often we neglect our spiritual self - to the detriment of our physical self. Inspiring stuff, Joen. Keep going! Your older self will thank you. "Be mindful. Be grateful. Be positive. Be true. Be kind." - Roy T. Bennett (Your message summed up in a quote.)

Glad to see you guys are coming to a normal conclusion about the reality of life. The simple things are very necessary to balance our mind and bodies. The toxicity of mind altering substances do not define us, but only obscure reality. Living in the moment slows things down and calms our compulsive feelings. Enjoy your day.

What you were like is exactly what my ex husband used to do and be like. His insecurities and shyness also led him to drink in the first place. I gave him an ultimatum 16 years ago and he chose to keep drinking over his wife and child. It is tragic. Even worse for so called "functional alcoholic" which is sometimes even worse as it masks the problem to everyone but those that live with the person there is no masking it. Proud of you. Unexpected turn to your channel but I am really enjoying this new content.

Congratulations on both your discipline and dedication to choosing to live a healthy life style. If we don't make wellness a priority...an illness will eventually become the focus. And Amalie ...YES YES YES ...I LOVE your recipes! And again...make food your medicine or medicine will become your food. On a selfish request...maybe you could master the art of cottage cheese (breads, wraps, ice creams, cakes, etc). Since we started replacing breads with homemade cottage cheese and egg wraps (yes only two ingredients needed) my husband has lost two pants sizes and I have lost 12lbs. It's so high in protein and very satisfying. I would love to see your spin on elevating the recipes! Oh to jumpstart our weight loss journey we did do a 3 day egg fast and it truly worked!

First thing, I am extremely proud of you for stopping drinking. But here’s the bad part. I have been a RN working in hospital for 27/yrs and caring for alcoholics. I know their struggles and I’ve seen so many fall off the wagon because of two reasons. First, once a Alcoholic always a alcoholic and it is a hereditary disease something that sometimes can be out of your control. Second, the patients who I see that successfully stop long term are people who join AA and use the AA as your support. Amelia is an exceptional support by her not drinking as well but it’s imperative you go to support meetings and have other support by the professionals. They teach you how to hopefully never to fall off the wagon one day which could be a year or two away but with a support from a AA is so important. Also, alcohol will destroy your liver and once that happens you have to detox for 6=months before ever getting on a transplant list to save your life. I’ve seen people die many times from this disease. Keep up the good work !

I have to say, I am curious why Amalie stayed through all those years. She does all the cooking, cleaning, and what looks like, years of patient babysitting. Living with someone who cannot regulate their emotions/ tantrums, and who becomes reclusive without liquid courage, due to their crippling insecurity, is not particularly enjoyable. I am hoping there is some deeply romantic and generous aspect in private that balances the years of immaturity. Being openly vulnerable and changing for the better is very commendable. However, doing things for others, and sacrificing personal comfort, is where true change resides. I always enjoy your videos, you both deserve tons of views. The colour coding and drone videos were excellent, good work as always.

I almost stopped the video after the first 10 seconds. that would be gross. seriously- you guys dont need to do weird tricks to improve your health. just eat healthy and rink the right amount of fluids. one think I see that you guys need to change is your consumption of sugar! the crap you were eating on your hike to the end of the world was so unhealthy! I have stopped eating sugar for almost 3 months now. so many benefits! and I stopped drinking heavily about 3-4 years ago when I broke up with my alcoholic girlfriend that I was with 5 years. now I probably have 1 -2 beers in a month at most. many months no alcohol at all. I cant even imagine having a heavy syrupy red wine now. and of course, alcoholic drinks are packed with high levels of sugar too! there's a great video on YT by Dr Eric Berg about how alcohol is the #1 thing that will prevent you from losing weight, because it shuts down the liber's ability to burn fat far 24 hours after drinking. and I have to say it does look like Joen has lost some weight over these last 4 months!
