I code everything in my life and I love it. When I teach or help someone learn code, I tell them to think of a problem in their life that they could fix with code and do it. Your invoice is a perfect example. I've used just about every language over the years and at some days, I've swapped between 7 different languages. Now, it's mostly GoLang, Python, and some Java. A couple days ago, I started learning Kotlin.

Happy to see you excited about a new career! Although i would disagree that video is low demand, it's quite the opposite. In fact i have gone from charging $400-$1,000 for singular videos to now charging $2k-$5k/month for making 'low quality' short form content. Which is interesting as the demand is higher but effort is lower. But I understand it's not for everybody as I know people like to exercise their high-effort high production work - which in fact has decreased in demand. I do come from a fortunate background where i've built an audience but I can speak for some of my creator friends in the same boat. That being said, i'm so excited to see what you do with your new endeavour!

Love a lot of the points you mentioned. Especially the struggle of trying to get gigs with companies that don''t want to pay you and instead find someone to do it for free. I've been freelancing in an industry lately that's filled with organizations that do not want to spend the money on high quality content, but it's filled with photographers and videographers willing to work for free. It makes finding jobs there very difficult. Thankfully, I worked full-time as an in-house video producer/videographer for a large institution. Which I prefer over the full-time freelance route, even though I don't have all of the freedom. Would to see videos about your coding experience and where is a good place to start. Always love learning new skills.

Good luck in the coding world and keep up the creative thinking. Coding jobs can kill that quick. Coming from 9 years as a system developer, my experience is that it's better to own your project than to work for someone else. You don't have to own it on your own, a nice team who build each other up is the best. 😊

this was super interesting and insightful! I can totally relate, as I did the same thing - studied computer science, didn't like it and didn't really understand it at the time - dropped that for some other major. I ended up not even working much in the degree I studied haha. I then went down the film/editing path at the start of the pandemic, love it and still do! But I want to expand upon my skillsets outside of my field, and I think returning to code might be fun, especially now that you mentioned the small projects involved - like making your own invoice! Also, with the available AI tools to make the process more easier to digest and learn, I think I can give coding another shot anyways, thanks for this video and perspective Matthew, really happy to have come across it!

Sounds like your skills and personality will thrive in Coding. I personally love video work, but adding quality portraits and drone work made a HUGE difference for my leads. The game has definitely changed to where if you were a one stop shop, you can definitely crank out more Contant and make some pretty good money. Now, obviously, there are other jobs. Where are you can make money more consistently without needing to have a very specific personality and work drive. Starting a KZfaq channel and being consistent with it is something I always have wanted to do. I often find that being an expert in the photo video world doesn’t really mean anything on KZfaq if you were no name. I think finding a niche that you love and that people care about is the hardest part about KZfaq.

By the way, I tried to start a couple of KZfaq channels for fun (including this one) and I used some of your advices 😃 Learning to code (especially that now you feel so passionate and optimistic about programming) is probably one of the best decisions you’ve ever made in your life, trust me! Back in the days I was in a music business and I was a pretty successful music producer with a lot of contacts, but I felt the same as you felt with video editing. So, I changed my career. I’ve been working as a backend developer for around 8 years already. Now I understand that there’s no big difference between producing a good track, making a nice cinematic video or writing a neat code. I never got into paid video work, but make a lot of my own videos for YT/IG/TikTok which has been my focus for a few years now. That said, I've done programming for a long time and paid professional level work in it. Took a long break because it has its own types of stresses involved, but I'm trying to get back in for similar financial reasons and topics like recent AI hype that's super interesting. Right now I'm trying to fix up old coding projects to release them as GPL open source so I've got a public portfolio of sorts. So far I've found making money direct with software isn't easy but I don't know current tools and maybe didn't have the type of ideas that connected with people that would pay. My last attempts were Android apps I eventually moved from paid to advertising supported, so I've probably made a few dollars on them here and there over the years.

Yeah, you right, in coding industry you can earn a lot of many in a short span of time. But the same is any other industry. I think is not about particular occupation but about a mix of some components like skills, personal traits, luck, connections, etc. Thera are high paid programmers as well as ones struggle with existence 🙂 Personally, some time ago I've tried to transition to coding but it was killing me: I've found coding very boring, sometimes time consuming and you can spend your entire day just to find one small error like coma or dot 😅 But the other hand video give me freedom and creative satisfaction even if it is still very hard for me. Hey! Definitely can't go wrong learning some code. I always recommend python to learn the basics. Than focus on whichever goal you have. It can take a long time to learn. I gotta be honest -- I feel like the thing you're missing here is good skills in strategy and marketing. With them -- you can find super lucrative paths within video -- and without them, even the apps you code won't get very far. There are also tons of low paying developer jobs -- as well as 300K+ SWE jobs. It's the exact same dilemma as in video. But I mean if you enjoy coding more go for it.

I genuinely believe anyone can code! I always recommend learning python to understand then focus on a goal. Maybe it's automating a process in your life or building a website. I believe in you! 😄

Are you not afraid that (sooner or later) AI can write code for everyone who needs it? ChatGPT can write code.

I like the video Matt, but I'm afraid it's too general. I've been doing video for 18 years, and I've been able to scale it where I have multiple people, running multiple projects and other than the initial investment in equipment, I'm just over seeing it and making passive income. If you're doing content creation, you're on point, but be cautious when you say "video," generally speaking. Good luck with your new career.

Hey! Glad to hear you’ve found success with your video production business. I’ve tried broadcasting could never, not for me. This video is my experience after 9 years freelancing. The title is general to capture a larger audience.

@@matthewpaquette ya broadcasting is a beast of its own and not for everyone. I like your buddy’s website idea. One time I calculated all the views from videos I’ve produced for other people and it was tens of millions, but not many know I’ve made them. I’ll sign up for sure.
