For the Thunderbird’s tenth-generation, Ford gave it a special platform with independent rear suspension, a Thunderbird first. But what separated the old Turbo Coupe from the new Super Coupe? Watch and see.

I'd rented a Thunderbird for a day in '89. I remember thinking as I took the first on ramp to the Interstate, "This thing uses the same width of tire as my Camaro, but is several hundred pounds heavier. What could it possibly do?" I was very surprised, ran all over the place with it just to drive. I parked it in the driveway at midnight because I was too tired to go anywhere else with it. Despite it being a base model, it had automatic headlights and a self-dimming rear view mirror. So in doing this video, you've brought back a fond automotive memory. If the memory serves properly,, the weight of these cars was much more than was intended, and afterward, Ford engineers were much more careful with the weight they put into vehicles. It's a shame, as the MN-12 chassis could have had many more uses than it did. Couldn't you imagine the chassis stretched a few inches to make a new Crown Victoria, for example?

Man this takes me back.... Back when late 90's when I first became a Police Officer we had a 86 Thunderbird that was confiscated in a drug bust that was a used to run drugs between St. Louis and Kansas City was heavily modified, Like The Elwood Blues said "It's got a cop motor, a four hundred and forty cubic inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks",except this one had a chipped 5.0 and and was basically gutted of everything it didn't need to run and pass inspection, We slapped a flat black paint job on it with satin black police lettering and made it our highway chase car.

20 years ago my good/crazy friend bought a Super Coupe. When I arrived early for his weekly Fri nite party he realized there were no pork rinds! He asked me to join him on the pork rind run to the local corner 24/7 chinese grocery store 2 miles away. I believe we broke the fastest world speed record "pork rind round trip" of the day. Wow...the terror was fun! Luckily he bought a huge family bag of pork rinds ,no need for another terrifying speed run. We washed em down with gallons of Colt 45.

Owned an '89 and still own a '97 Bird V8 with the Sport option. '89 was a great car that took a beating and never failed. The '97 has been my daily for years...and for being almost 30 years old now, is still in great condition and has never failed me or had any major issues. Just a strong car, comfortable, and still turns heads...especially now, that younger people don't know what they are and think it's a new model, because they're still so good looking. Been a Ford/Lincoln owner my whole life with several of both...but the MN-12 Birds were one of the best designed & highest quality cars Ford ever produced. The '97 Birds had evolved to near-perfection from the less-refined '89's and had a great interior...and then they stopped making them. Typical of Ford to refine a car for years till it's just right, then kill it.

I spent two hours at one PYP wrecking yard on Monday to get one mint condition compact spare, two door panel fabric strips, the spare tire coverboard and spare tire "bolt". I visited four Thunderbirds and three Cougars in this one location for these specific parts for my recently acquired 1997 Cougar 30th Anniversary edition. On two T-Birds I had to remove the rear seats to get access to the trunks. One had the only spare tire coverboard in the yard that day.

Got used to your videos with a good cup of coffee every morning. Took me to a good place among the chaos and trash polluting the airways of morning news and banter. Looking forward to you getting better and back at it. I drove a 191 SC with automatic for a while. It was a good running, great driving car. I remember JBA’s IRS conversions. Out of my price range back then but innovative to say the least. JBA was cutting edge of Fox Mustang performance back then. I remember the Essex V6 didn’t have the greatest of reputations for reliability - warped heads or head gaskets as I recall. So I was skeptical of the supercharged version when it came out. While simply a footnote in a long line of Ford engines, it was powerful for its day - quite fun to drive. Again, get strong and we look forward to you being back with great productions.

Bought mine new in 1991, 302 LX, dark blue with pale blue leather seats, every option except electric dash. "Performance Traction Lok" was a 3.08 gear in the 8.8 inch housing and I drove 90 miles a night on the New Jersey Turnpike coming home from work in the wee hours. These cars excelled at high speed cruising, mine would squat down at 100mph. The engine was only turning 2800 rpm at 100 and the car really came into it's own on the highway. I put well over 200,000 miles on it and gave it to a friend who's sons ran it into the ground. That 302 still used no oil when I gave it away.

In 1989 a friend of mine worked for Car and Driver. Nothing glamorous, just shuttling cars, getting them washed, etc. One night he drove a new Super Coupe home and took a few of us for a ride. It was a great ride until it wasn’t. Too hot into a left-hander put the RF wheel into the firewall. No injuries to us, the Ford press car was totaled, and my friend somehow kept his job (or so he said).

They offered the 302 as an option beginning in '91, then in 1994 they redesigned the interior and made some minor exterior design changes. It's the '94-97s that have dual airbags and did away with the automatic seat belt harness. They also switched to the 4.6 V8 in '94. From '85-88 I always preferred the 302-equipped T-Birds over the TurboCoupes. The TCs were buzzy, touchy engines that required constant maintenance or they'd become unreliable. The good ol' 302 from the Mustang was a change the oil and put the hammer down for 200,000 miles, plus it was just smoother and seemed more powerful than the turbo 2.3. My Dad had an '88 Thunderbird LX 5.0 with everything but leather and moon roof. Had electronic gauges, the keypad on the driver's door, automatic headlamps and bright lamps, power seats, and of course the Mustang HO 5.0. it was white with red interior, had the aluminum wheels too. I always felt like the coolest kid in my Boy Scout troop when we rolled up in it for meetings/camping. Ford used to build cool cars 😞

No word from Mr. Magnante, and I surely believe it's a medical issue. I hope he's on the mend. I think we found out in a subsequent video that this car is actually a 1990, not a 1989 and was owned by the Hastings family at one time. As stated last time: My sister and brother in law had one of these heaps from brand new. They had it 10 years and sold it. It wasn't a year and a half old and the driver's door latch broke one day. It was a two-day nightmare to replace because the dealership kept saying the parts were discontinued. As I was in the parts industry then, I had to look up my own parts and provide them with the part numbers. Turns out the "discontinued" clip was the same part from 1972 onward on most Ford products. Of course, yours truly had to do the repair. LOL. It was a nice riding car, but very ho-hum. My sister's was a 1990 base model car. Another time during a warranty repair, the dealer lost the keys to the car and even though it was sold at the dealership originally, it took them three times to get a working set of keys again. My memory of these cars is not fond. LOL. IRS was also the record company that signed the musical group Go Gos. Those automatic seat belts were a PITA. My mother's 1993 Saturn SL2 (and my sister's T-Bird) had them. Correct, 1991 brought the 5.0L (302 CID) V8 and 1994 brought the 4.6L V8. No VIN, can't win, but might go something like: 1FA for US made Ford passenger car, P for automatic seat belts, P60 for Thunderbird base model, 4 for 3.8L V6 with multiport fuel injection, "Essex V6", then a random check digit, K for the 1989 model year, H for Lorain, OH assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Lorain, OH plant operated from 1958 to 2005. About 8 million vehicles were produced in the time it operated and most production was then moved to "OHAP" or Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake. No tag, can't brag, but looks like paint code ED Currant Red exterior paint. I do not believe that's correct on air bags and automatic seat belts. I think by the 1990 model year, it was either one or the other for the first few years. You could have a driver's airbag or automatic seat belts depending on the model. After a while, the automatic belts went away and airbags became the standard. My 1989 Cavalier has neither airbags nor automatic seat belts. But cars like the mid-1988 and 1989 Chrysler "M" body cars had a driver's airbag, but had manual seat belts as an example.

I got it from them in 2002 with 28K miles on it. My grandfather was about 91 at the time and stopped driving and gave it to me. It's a 2.0L four cylinder "Value Leader" base model (but has AC, cruise, tilt, rear defog, delay wipers, automatic). It had never been 10 miles from their house (which is a mile away from mine) from 1989 to 2002. I went with them to buy it. It was my first commuter car at my current job. He was killed by a drunk driver, who walked away in 07. I'll never sell that car. The original 2.8 is getting a little tired nowadays, but, it has 237k on it. Car has never seen salt, I usually park it in October. Transmission was rebuilt 3 years ago. Convertible top was redone 5 years ago. Great video and as always not simply because of the elaboration of the things particular to the subject vehicle. Your exegesis on the inevitable rusting of the exhaust system brings up "pleasure" that modern day car owners will seldom, if ever, know, the constant replacement of exhaust system parts. Growing up in my father's auto parts store in a small town in the '60s, we stocked hundreds of exhaust pipes, tail pipes and mufflers. They accounted for the largest proportion of floor and shelf space in the store. In Western New York State back then you could anticipate replacing some, if not all, of your exhaust system every two years as the components were made of only mild steel. This was a chore not limited to our part of the country.

@catsaregovernmentspies 10 ай бұрын
Yup. I am born and raised in Iowa, and it used to be a common site to see mufflers and exhaust pipes laying on the shoulder of the highway. And there were always loud cars farting around with shot mufflers. It is so nice that modern exhaust systems are so much better now.

Prayers for your speedy recovery Steve, watching your videos.....and picking up what your laying down. I will add a SAFETY warning (Recall) related to those who may own one of those early version '89 T-birds as I know first hand. Working in a Fleet situation, we had experienced Brake performance issues when brake pad wear became significant, in any event when making tight turns the calipers would Contact the Suspension and Compress! and there would be a Temporary loss of Brakes, Ford remedied that with a large Nut "limiter / stop" for those who are not aware? Just an FYI when restoring those Rigs. Cool Video as usual Steve 👍

I remember when this car debuted, there were reports that the engineering team was criticized internally at Ford for being like 400 lbs overweight from the target weight. The power deficit from a limp 3.8 forced them to squeeze in a V8, making it even heavier at a time when everyone was trying to lighten up.

Not a Ford guy. Chevys have been my choice since I first became aware of cars as something other than that big thing with wheels that dad or mom.took us places in. I have been a car nut since about age 3. That being said (with apologies to Steve for copying one of his favorite lines), I have really liked this generation of Thunderbirds since the first magazine article I read about them. To my eyes, they are easily the best looking T-Birds ever, and with the IRS and available Super Coupe package, very sporty for a personal luxury car. I like the fact that they went with the turbo-6 instead of the V-8, at least at first, because I'm a Corvair aficionado and the Corvair Monza Spyder was the world's first successful turbocharged production car. If I could find a solid one on the cheap, it might be easier and less expensive just to install a newer and more reliable V-8 than to go through the hassle of rebuilding the turbo-6 for all of 210 h.p. I'm thinking a crate Chevy LS would do the job nicely. You know the old line, "Built Ford tough with Chevy stuff"! As a side note, the Thunderbird WAS available as a 4-door sedan from 1967-69 (I think those years are correct). It had "suicide" back doors, and the cutline fir that dior extended up the sail panel along the curve of the standard landau iron trim piece on the standard vinyl top. Just an easy oversight on Steve's part. Those cars were very forgettable.

I remember my in -law's Olds Cutlass Supreme coupe having similar seatbelts, but with a twist. The belts were attached to the door, rather than the door frame, and weren't motorized. This means that to undo your belt and get out, you simply open the door all the way - as the door moves, it pulls both the shoulder and lap belts away from you. Of course, this means significantly stronger (i.e. heavier) lower doors and thick frames around the windows to hold both belt attachment points in place, but it did work - kinda.

This is another car design that could look right as an electric conv. I like the shape of the windows canopy, could make some hood louvers, techno lights... some potential honestly!

Correction. Thunderbird was a four door as well as a two door around 1967 to 71 The four doors were hard tops with suicide rear doors. A car buddy of mine once had one. He liked it. I think he has it when it was about 20 years old. Interestingly, even Cougar was a four door and a wagon in the late 70's when it was a massive body on frame midsize and also it's successor in the early Fox body years.

Hey Steve, about the seatbelt issue, I used to work at a Honda factory, we built Civics for US and Canada. In the early 90s the U.S. version got those motorized seatbelts, the Canadian version did not. I remember them well. The factory is up here in Alliston, Ontario.

My dad and I have been t-bird fans for a long time. My first car was the 87 t-bird with the v6 and my dad later bought the 90’s era bird with the 5.0 V8. It was a great car with a massive oil leak. They are getting harder to find nowadays.

A friend of mine had the Super coupe with the engine built to Busch Grand National Specs....got stopped in Quebec and the speeding ticket was over $800. The only reason they didn't take the car was because he spoke French. The cop asked him if he was maxed out, he said he'll no, he still had lots left.
