Күн бұрын

I raced my first ever triathlon over the weekend. This is the most intensive race I've done while being on medical keto. I take you along with me and share what the experience of competing in swim, bike, and run was like without carbohydrates. I also share how sport or challenges like this can benefit your mental health.

it's amazing how fast you can tell a difference, isn't it? Just a bit of caution, if you are new to medical keto - if you want a "cheat" meal, or happen to have a slip up, the revert back to original state is nearly instantaneous. Whether it's physical pain, mental symptoms, diabetic issues etc. There are a lot of unsuspected factors that can knock you out of ketosis, such as medicines (for example cough syrup), fillers in foods etc. The biggest tell that I've been knocked out of ketosis is fluid retention. I experience incredible abdominal bloating as my muscles swell with glycogen. In the beginning of my journey, I had like 3 bites of a birthday cake I bought for my FIL. When I got on the scale the next morning, I had gained 8 lbs overnight. I was holding an entire gallon of water, which means I must have drank over a gallon of water in the prior 1-2 days and just never expelled any of it. I didn't notice I wasn't going to the bathroom because we were on the road. Nowadays, I get on the scale every morning and every night, to closely monitor for retention. For me, it's a great indicator. It's normal for our weight to fluctuate 2-5 lbs per day, depending on size (I'm 5'10 and 185 lb). Any more than 5 lbs and I know I have a problem. Please do your best to prepare for these instances. You can get yourself back into ketosis within 24-72 hrs (fasting helps a lot, but that's not reasonable with many medications). But there may be periods of sudden, unexpected struggle and symptom recurrence. I wish you the most success on your keto journey, friend! It's a wonderful tool for overall wellness. Cheers 😊

You're an inspiration. Everyone can live their best lives and do what they want to do. I've been watching your channel for months now and you have taught me to keep going. I was previously diagnosed with bpd, bipolar depression, ptsd, and anxiety. I had psychotic symptoms whenever I was doing very bad mentally. I found out later that I was misdiagnosed and I actually had adhd and everything I was going through was due to trauma and untreated adhd. I'm doing way better, and I thank you for keeping me going because otherwise I don't know where I would have been.

So proud of your progress and I hope you can sustain better health for yourself and your family. I am scheduled for the L Etape Tour De France Las Vegas next year, and I want to be on the podium for my age class this time ( I was 5th out of 10 in the 25 mile race last year : ) . It is those community events among sporty regular everyday people, that make things fun and healthy.

Carbs are used quite fast when doing long distance anyway. Carbs are still good fast energy. Living keto might still mean you have carbs since 50% of protein is transferable. Amino acids are used in a process called gluconeogenesis, which produces glucose from non-carbohydrate sources.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on endurance fueled by keto physiology. Most perspectives on this choice are whether or not established endurance elites with no apparent health issues see any performance improvement when switching from a traditional high carb diet to low carb but not low enough to be keto, which is not helpful to me as recreational endurance runner who uses keto for metabolic issues associated with type 2 diabetes. Your content has encouraged me to keep working to figure out the best foods to fuel my hours on feet. Finding the metabolic path to being well is an endurance event in itself, and it comes with invaluable finishers swag. Our future selves will be thankful that we are training through this now.

Take it from me-a competitive swimmer(also a schizo) at the top of my class for 15 years-it doesn’t matter what you eat as long as it’s not American bullshit like McDonald’s and not processed food like tv dinners. Especially for running cuz you burn a LOT of calories really fast, just keep eating. What I’d do if I were you is take something unhealthy that you eat all the time, and replace it with a healthy substitute. The golden combo for any illness or any physiological problem is just: healthy eating, exercise, and sleep. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing for years but I’m on a personal “vacation” where I eat anything I want and not exercise, so I’m getting back into my usual routine soon but yeah.

Exercise regrows the hippocampus in the brain , which is shrunken to some degree in most mental illnesses. It was great to learn that. keto diet for those that can follow it, is great for healing the brain coupled with exercise. if any trauma needs to be healed out of the amygdala to remove anxiety from the body first to have a pain free body to start exercising, shadow work, trauma therapy etc is a good place to start.

A healthy human body (on a high carb diet) runs out of glycogen after about 2 hours of intensive activity, then the fuel source should slowly transition to the body fat and ketones made from it. I consider myself lucky to have had a first hand experience of this happening in my teens. I simply rode my bike for the whole afternoon without taking any food with me. At first, I got feelings of weakness after my glycogen had run out (I was metabolically unhealthy as a teen, imagine that, and I wasn't even overweight) but it got better after a few months of training. So, this experience is the reason I never believed the advice given to athletes (and also everyone else) that we have to feed ourselves constantly with carbs (otherwise we probably just drop dead). The world of nutrition was very confusing for me in the nineties. After keto became popular, it all started to make sense from my POV. ... and ... Well done, Rob! I'm proud of you both.

This was great to watch, Lauren! Congratulations on your triathlon accomplishment. I love seeing people going after their big dreams. ⭐️🏆 I would be interested in more sports related content on the channel. Was wondering if you’d consider including some opinions from people with chronic illness and chronic fatigue, as I find a lot of the information out there on exercise for these conditions is uninformed, ableist, and honours theory/short term trials as opposed to lived experience.

I have noticed in doing any go-hard endurance sports with people that have been on pretty strict keto for quite awhile, their sweat often seems to put a whiff of ammonia around them. I think it is from the kidneys trying to break down excess protein to power all the activity, but I'm not a metabolic specialist so I don't know for sure what the cause would be.
