Fun fact!! Most rats and mice do NOT like cheese. Years ago, people stored grains in glass jars and meats hanging high up. Cheese, on the other hand, was laid on the shelf. That made it an easy target for unwelcome pantry visitors, including mice. So mice ate cheese because it was convenient, not because they liked it. They will typically choose literally anything else if they had the choice.

I have actually owned rats and mice as pets for 14 years now. You can teach a rat to walk on a leash, they are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.
