I have watched every episode of this project since the first and I can safely say that this one has been my favourite. From the hospitality at the start, running away from the police , playing football with the local kids, Guus’ exploits, and finally Sidehs kindness at the end. The storytelling in these episodes has improved dramatically since the early days and I’ll be sorry to see the mission end!

@@skullnukeful You are right, but slightly mistaken. Once they cross the Algerian border, they will have signal again. But the 850 km from Zouerat to the Algerian border, is just sand through the desert, and no roads. So I would expect about 2 weeks of silence from they leave Zouerat and until they get to the border. And they left about 1 week ago. However, it is possible they could get signal in Bir Moghrein. And they should get there about now. So maybe...

I loved the landscapes from Namibia and some parts of Subsaharan Africa, but man, these last ones are my favourite so far

I also love the landscape in Sahel. I have long wished to be able to drive all through Sahel, from Dakar to Djibouti. Unfortunately, there are too many wars, and too many rebels and terrorists there. And there doesn't seem to be an end to the conflicts there. But maybe some day...

Once you get to Atar, I don't think it should be so hot anymore. At least when I was in Mauritania, it was south of Atar the heat started. Also, look forward to 850 km sand running from Zouerat to the border.

From Stan’s instagram I believe they hit Zouerat yesterday. Is it all pure sand “roads” until the border? D:

@@astrolopitekos Well, I drove from Algeria to Mauritania just before the pandemic. Since I drove through SADR, it was only 800 km with only sand pistes for me. But since it's not safe to go through SADR now, they would have to go around the corner, and that would add 50 km, I guess. Well, they could go straight and not go by Bir Morghrein. That might save them 50-100 km. But I'm not sure if there are any pistes on hat route. Anyway, the simple answer to your question is: Yes. It's only sand after Zouerat. Or at least it was in 2019. But it's not correct to call it a sand ROAD. It's just a piste. I know Mauritania has planned to build a proper road there, but I haven't heard anything about them starting yet. I do have to say, though, that if their van is 2WD, then I'm not sure if they will be able to drive that route. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I don't think the driver is skilled enough in sand driving to be able to do it.

@@Tjalve70it's interesting to hear from someone with first hand experience. I've been wondering about the sand 'road' stretch for a while. What is the situation like with food and water? Can you resupply on the way? And do you meet anyone else travelling on the route?

@@_Wombat When we were there, we got kinda lost. So we didn't see very much other traffic. But I know there are trucks driving that route regularly, transporting goods from Algeria to Mauritania. However, we never saw any of them. We drove slowly, averaging less than 100 km per day. And we saw on average one car every day, except in the towns. I assume that Russ Cook will not run through SADR, so his longest stretch will probably be from Bir Moghrein to the border. Although he might be able to resupply a bit at a military fort called Ain Ben Tili. Bir Moghrein is a town, and it should be possible to resupply everything there. But there is about 300 km from Zouerat to Bir Moghrein. We did see at least one hostel along the way, and there might be others that we didn't see. So it's not completely deserted. I'm not sure how easy it will be for him to run in soft sand, but I'm more worried about the 2WD van than him. He should be able to make it, even though he might get slowed down. The van, I'm not sure. I guess it depends on how heavy it is, and how good the driver is at sand driving. If you want to check out my trip, you can google "Afrikatur 2019-20". It's on Face. It's written in Norwegian though, but I guess google translate should work. And pictures speak for themselves. We crossed over from Algeria to Mauritania Dec 24th 2019, and we arrived in Zouerat Jan 4th. However, I was unable to update much during this time, so look for posts dated Dec 31st to Jan 10th, if you want the posts through this part of the desert.

@@Tjalve70 thanks for the detailed answer. Sounds like an interesting trip. I'm interested to see how these guys face it. Like you say the van is the largest concern - I expect the 4wd will need to pull it out a fair few times. But we'll see.
