Yep, I bought a 1999 BMW E36 and the first thing I did was upgrade all the cooling system components with plastic parts to aftermarket stainless steel and aluminum parts. I have had zero trouble. I even swapped out my fading plastic headlights with glass headlights with the angel eys halo rings for safety. Older BMWs are very dependable as long as you maintain them and know what parts should be proactively upgraded.

BMW, though, is run by a family that owns a controlling interest, which bought the company in the 50s, after escaping the Nuremberg war crimes trials because the old man slipped through the cracks. The family fortune was made building the batteries for the U-boats in WW II, using slave labor. If you buy a BMW, you're supporting a family descended from a war criminal, whose war-crime fortune was how they came to control the company.

When I was a kid, we had an early-80s W123 Mercedes 230 E. It was such a classy car with a really smooth ride and it was quite a headturner on the road. Best part about it was it was built like a tank - a motorcycle once crashed onto the rear right side coming from the right and the rear right panel just got scratched and barely dented. It would rarely need to be serviced even after 10 years. Now my sister bought a brand new Mercedes E-class in 2022 that came with all the techy gizmos and such and she had to get it serviced after 9,000 kms because of a faulty climate control system (it was leaking freon from one of the pipes, lol).

My experience with BMW has been fantastic. Had an E46 for a couple years with over 200k miles and it had no mechanical issues at all. Ive had an F32 for nearly 4 years now and it had been amazing. My e46 323 wagon just crossed 200,000 miles, and I can't say I've had the same experience. It's a gorgeous car, but man does it have some issues. I drive it extremely conservatively as well, I probably cross 2000rpm once a month, but the thing just keeps finding new parts for me to order. The car really feels like it was built with maintenance being an after thought when I look at the way some of these parts were designed. Hopefully they're not all like that, because there are a lot of things that I love about it.

@@willhelterbrand3785 they are great cars , close to perfection their goal was to meet the same quality as the Mercedes-benz wich till today they never did, the governament in Germany made both brands have in all cars a limit of 250 km/h (1 mile = 1.6 km´s) this because between late 70´s and early 80´s both brands had cars that drove above 300 km/h and many people were dying at the time in car crashes , but one can take the limiter at home it´s very easy, but i ,in a car ,the BMW745i(V8) was driving close to 300 km/h and i had a splt second of awareness and reduced to 200Km/h ,it´s death on wheels one can die for many factors not relatred with the car quality, i also have a 82 red 318i van and for a lot of years i never saw other than mine ,this in the last 30 years and allthought it´s a van it´s a incredible car, never as problems only water, gasoline and oil are their problem much better than more recent models from BMW, i will never sell it, 1st they wouldn´t pay me the money of it´s value ,2nd maybe the only van on the rodas from it´s year or model, i drive a lot in Europe and i never saw other ,only one from the next model in France maybe in 96 when driving to England to meet my sister and brother who live there, regards(keep it ,it´s very rare)

I have owned three BMW 3 series all older models with 100k+ mileage. Scotty is 100% correct they turn into money pits if you try and abuse them and not maintain them. Wonderful cars the best driving experience I’ve ever had and I love them but in order for BMW to keep prices down they use plastic parts and the east coast winter just destroys them as the constant freezing then heating up of components really wears them out fast! Now that I’m an adult and have a good job I’ll buy a brand new or low mileage certified pre owned will never buy high mileage again lol

It’s amazing how everyone says the German cars are junk, and expensive to maintain. They have obviously never owned a newer corvette. My last 2 corvettes had less then 10,000 miles and they were broke all the time. My 2010 c6 sat on the hoist at the dealership for 6 months waiting for parts , the plastic line that went between the 2 gas tanks was Dry rotted, it cost $2200 because you couldn’t buy just the tube , you had to buy the tanks , without the level sensor. So expect to spend more to maintain a sports car , no matter where they are made

I'm Italian, I own a Fiat Punto, and the only way I can afford to maintain that car is that the replacement parts are made mostly made in my town and I can get my hands on them very cheaply. The quality really sucks overall, especially the plastics, but the diesel engine is great, never had a single problem (and I live in a really hilly\mountainous region)

@Wuanslm the 500 is a very popular car where I live. I have never heard anyone complain about any reliability issues with them. They're just a cheap to buy/run/maintain/insure small little car that puts a smile on your face. When driving it, or when seeing it on the street. IDK, we love them over here, I don't see why anyone would dislike them...

My parents bought a new Golf MKII in 1985 and LOVED it. In fact, aside from a gas engine that proved more finicky than Morris The Cat (it rarely complained once they started feeding it Mobil "Super Plus," granted), they had very little trouble with the car. Alas, a cab driver ran a "STOP" sign and totaled the poor thing in 1990. After that, they went back to buying second-hand American cars.

Spot on. and as always educational and a hoot. Wonder where you would put Saab on this list if they were still around? My 1985 Saab 900 Turbo went through $ 5 000 in maintenance from 1988-1990. That's like over $ 10 000 in today's dollars. 40K miles on it when purchased, 90K miles when sold. And was about to need wiring harnesses. Still miss it. GM stole their soul. Wish Koenigsegg had saved them. You didn't mention British cars. Like the one made for me in Swinton. It says Honda on it, but pretty sure that is where my Type R was built. See? You can buy a reliable, easily maintained car made in Europe.

I drive a 1993 volvo 940 with the automatic, has 255,000 and runs like a dream. Bought it for $1700 and definitely haven't put more than $300 into it fixing it up (various leaks that happen when cars sit for extended periods of time) extremely reliable and fun car to drive, never fails to turn heads.

Designed by Swede, Pelle Petterson. The S was not built in Britain, only the first 6000 (of ~48000) cars was (only labeled 1800 with no extra letters). After the first two years build was moved to Sweden (for 1963) because of quality problems at Jensen (in UK) and the designation S was added (S for Sverige to mark the change to better quality build).

I've had sensors start screaming at me a few times (passenger restraint system, adaptive headlights, etc), but funnily enough if you ignore them after a while the car takes the hint and fixes itself. Just faulty sensors due to the humidity of where I live, they eventually reset themselves and realize everything's fine lol
