It wasn’t banned because of “violence,” it was banned because it’s real-life depictions of the gentoxic effects of nuclear radiation, the entire movie is about Japan during World War II.

@Sekačka Obecná It takes place during WW1 or WW2, but doesn't say so. You can see Japanese soldiers in the background wearing uniforms from that time. It uses the imperialist Japanese flag a few times. When the magician tortures the crowd, it looks similar to chemical torture.

I am horrified by the simple cuts of audio. I can only ever have a surface level of understanding towards those who decide to watch or made this piece. So for all the 9-11-year-olds thinking they have a "mature mind 👍😌" and can handle it, please don't watch it, because if you really think you can handle heavy stuff like this, you aren't as mature as you think. looks similar to Freaks (1932) in some ways. it plays on a universal allegory of life as a carnival/circus (it gets more complicated symbolism wise for sure), and it is meant to tap into some subconscious constructs so deep it is definitely very upsetting I think. I'd say it is an exercise of morals in a way, definitely a different kind of experience far away from it being in an entertainment sphere, for sure a hard exercise, but as a representation of...art I suppose it is interesting. Not all anime are fun...I still have traumatic memories from watching Grave of the Fireflies , but I guess this is what makes anime as an art medium special :)

I think what really makes Shoujo Tsubaki awful is the fact that it doesn’t really focus on the gory horror and the more psychological side. Gore, blood is something that can appear but will eventually pass on in your mind, you forget about it. But the rape, the abuse, the pedophilia, it stays there, because its sad and Midori’s life COULD actually be a little girl’s current life, you’d be surprised how little some women have rights. To sum it up, this story is more sad and heart-wrenching than scary to me because all o fus deep down wanted a happy ending for Midori, but she never gets it.

Not sure how much you looked into this film - it was animated by one man, cell by cell over 5 years. He also held the private screenings with a circus theme at the time of it's small premiers. Impeccable animation but his goal was not to shock and disgust people but like you say; to inform and open Japan's eyes to the travesties that some young people go through - a subject very close to home for the creator himself.

I didn't know this exists. In the opening of the explaining and showing the pictures I automatically felt this is sooooo familiar. Like really. My brain is on high alert right now. Everything is so familiar. The pictures, the storyline, everything. Then it clicked.... Everything she experienced, I experienced it also. From me being traumatized by the sight of my father choking my mom and beating her, my mom giving me to her godmother because she can not support my needs, getting sexually assaulted when I was 4, being abused by my mom's girlfriend, being touched by my mom's brother, having depression, seeking for the light and hope, being bullied, always getting neglected till I found Jesus. This is a good eye-opener actually. The author gave all he can do in his power. I won't watch it tho. But it's nice to know that this kind of anime exist to give a another point of view in life. To show what other people that they are still not aware of. It's traumatizing to watch I know (it's banned right?) . A open minded person will not hate this anime. Maybe be sad about it but not hate it. If you know what I mean. To everyone who experienced it too. A better future is ahead of us. Never give up. Just like I did. 💕💞 i didn't exactly experienced the whole thing like the whole details. It's more like a symbolism for me. Like when her mom died, for me it's when my father beats my mom. It broke my heart so much.

I "liked" this movie about as much as anyone can like an overly depressing film with no happy endings. That girl was given a raw deal. The ending really broke me- she was at least, maybe going to have a peaceful life where she'd be cared for, but instead, random bad luck leaves her all alone and abandoned. THAT was her reward after all her suffering.

So uh I ended up watching this movie awhile back, and from curiosity I decided to do some research on it and found that Shoujo Tsubaki according to google translate (I know it’s not the most reliable but this time it actually makes sense) means ‘Girl Camellia’ (I think it’s supposed to be Camellia Girl). This movie was actually based off of a story called The Camellia Girl. It’s basically a story about a poor girl who sells camellia flowers to make money but later on ends up performing by being tricked, forced, or sold. I also read somewhere that the Camellia Girl in the story is only supposed to suffer and struggle which makes sense regarding all that’s happened to her. Sorry this was really long I just wanted to give a little bit of insight to the story.

I watched this and it wasn't "scary" in the way everyone was saying it was, i think to most it was just intensely disturbing? There wasnt any sense of fear it was just a constant feeling of grossness and shame that kept hitting scene after scene. There was no light at the end of the tunnel, and you knew it would simply get worse when you went into it. I feel like the largest part of the film itself that gets left out when people talk about it is the fact that as someone who is watching we know that this child wont ever forget or be able to leave these things in the past. As a watcher and as someone who is only reacting to a story, we are seeing the beginning and the aftermath of a heinous lifetime but we can pause at any time to feel better. We can turn off the movie and go do something else but this story will continue to play out. The real horror here is that these events do play out in some place and time at some point in this world. She will forever live in a shitty world and have memories of the constant battle she has been through her entire life, she wont grow up and she wont grow out of this trauma. She will carry it until her death even if she tries her hardest to forget it. I think the real "fear" is that someone wont grow to overcome these things and these horrible actions towards her were her reality but our fictional. The ongoing trauma and pain meant to hurt her forever does it's own job as the monsters in this film say so often. They force her to suffer because they can, and because they want to, I think that's the real horror in stories with things like this in them in general. People can be monsters simply because they can and many monsters in this world dont have a reason to harm people, they simply choose to do so because that's what they want.

I really enjoy your comment. No to be cliche or anything, but it’s damn deep. I agree with what you said although I haven’t seen the movie myself and never will. But your making lots of great points and thinks that create thoughts that no one really wants to have so we push it to the back of our mind until it involves someway(hopefully not) it’s horrifying to live with the knowledge that something that you see on screen or somewhere, when it’s something terrible, we can pause, stop looking at it or forget it, however, it’s probably happening somewhere in the world.

@@tasie8352 bro, it’s not that deep. The animation style is meant to be unsettling? I’m sure that was the animator’s aim given the content genre. I didn’t say it’s bad, I said it looks cursed which is still a valid art form/style and it can be admired whilst being scary to look at in the same breadth. Is that not befitting? People watch “Saw” and may be disgusted but can still appreciate it. That’s the point lol
