I also hold books that deal with depression to a higher standard than I might some fun and fluffy book. So many people with depression turn to books for solace and guidance.

It unironically helped me a good bit a few month ago. I was in a really big emotional slump and I feel like I just needed to hear from someone else to keep going. I have to say that I don't have depression and I can see why it could even be harmful to read for someone with strong depression because you don't just magically wake up somewhere after committing and then everything turns out good if you just live, laugh and life lol

Romance novels tend to be bad
@alenanela1743
@alenanela1743 2 жыл бұрын
@@addheading I think that there are good romance books out there. The issue is too many bad romance books are given the green light to be published simply because a bad romance book is more palatable than a bad (insert any other genre) book. Cuz ~ loveee ~ and what not. And good grief, there are some truly, TRULY terrible romance books out there. It’s a shame honestly. Btw I am not a romance reader.

Right now a lot of romance novels have very sexist treatments of one or both partners. I rarely dip back in because I read hundreds growing up and most never address consent or like not hitting your spouse. There's a lot I read which fully lean into the she's horny = she's consenting area, and, eww. So it's less romance and more how modern day romance is. This is my take and my guess in one.

I can imagine Jess's shock after reading Twice Shy; I had the exact same reaction after reading You Deserve Each Other. Sarah Hogle is a gem!! As for TS, I think I had too much expectation so I didn't find it as much promising as I hoped it to be? Nonetheless, the book was great!! If you like TS, please check out YDEO. It's hilarious!! Also, not all romance books are the same. I started the genre with hopes but they were crushed. Probably I'm into the Sarah Hogle genre.

I really enjoyed the Midnight Library. As a teenager I went through the growing up depressed stage. I do think thought that you don't necessarily need depression to be depressed but what we think of when we hear depression (despite being the word for 'in a state of being depressed') is so singular that I feel like it's a bit one-sided to say 'a depressed person wouldn't do this'. Just my thoughts though.

Helloo. This video is great! I want to say I’m one of those people that actually found the midnight library helpful, but I’m kinda a sucker for inspirational quotes lol. I do find they help me on rougher days because I can’t find anything positive to say in my own brain…so it just kinda makes me pause and find a new lens to see the world through. Not necessarily the authors, but it makes me pause and find a refreshed way to look at things if that makes sense. I’m someone who beats myself up a lot over decisions I’ve made, and get in loops in my head of how if maybe I did one thing in a different way, I’d be happier. So this book made me think on that, and was a good reminder that maybe I can’t go back in time, but I can work on shaping my present into what I want it to be. One line I really liked is how Matt says something along the lines of “We feel like a black hole, but we’re a volcano and we can tend the land to grow into a forest again” (terrible paraphrase but I think you might know what I’m talking about). For me personally, it was a good reminder that even though I was going through a time where I felt really empty and with nothing positive inside myself, that quote gave me something to hold onto at the time that I might make it out of how I was feeling / what I was going through. (Note that I’m not saying this or any quote magically fixed and transformed my life, that doesn’t happen. It just gave me that bit of hope to hold onto and I think we just need that sometimes) I can understand how he’s not for everyone, but his quotes really get me through the day sometimes, just as that smidge of hope. I also want to note that Matt Haig does struggle with his own mental health. I think he actually had to take a break off social media since the end of last year because of it and still has not been around since. He’s writing out of his own experiences with it, and maybe like a dad preaching out of what’s been helpful for his in his personal struggles with all the best in heart. And yeah, maybe dads will get it wrong sometimes, buuut they try? Thank you for your reviews and I’m looking forward to more of your videos. You’re super entertaining and adorable 😊💞

Five plus stars for your shirt game in this video, especially the black and white and the plaid! The short chapter thing is seriously a plus. Lol. If slowburn is your thing, the third Brown Sisters book might be right up your alley. I think Midnight Library wasn't so much "oh, my depression is magically cured" as it was about Nora realizing she wanted to live amd reaching out for help. I've never been suicidal, but I definitely recognized her feelings of hopelessness when looking at her life. Of feeling washed up and wasted and like you've accomplished nothing. That was super relatable for me.

Twice Shy isn’t my favorite romance, but I think it’s a good entry to romance because there’s not really any sex scenes. But Sarah Hogle (I loved her other book You Deserve Each Other, which has a bit of a slow burn element) takes her time building up relationships with her characters, and tackles issues that couples in relationships deal with. I also liked that they were building up this really cute inn. It’s a very wholesome romance, if you are looking for a few books that I think have romance but also tackle relationship and individual issues I highly recommend “Beach Read” by Emily Henry, “The Bromance Bookclub” and “You Deserve Each Other” by Sarah Hogle. There are more, and honestly others would probably name different ones

I was so excited to get The Midnight Library for Christmas one year because I had heard a lot of good things about it. My aunt, who is working on her masters in psychology, said she wanted to read it. I guess a little background, I have bipolar and BPD. I have had multiple near suicides, psych ward stays, tried many different therapy types and medications, etc. When I read it, I thought it was very preachy and honestly a little ridiculous at times. I mean in one life her brother is dead because of a decision she made. That sends a bad message that other people's decisions could potentially be your fault. Also, sure, the message was to appreciate the life she has. But honestly, just because her life could have turned out worse doesn't make the one she tried to escape any less bad. Sure, her perspective may have changed. But that didn't change anything about her actual life or the potential brain chemistry causing her depression. There's also the fact that a lot of those other lives put her in a really good position in life, but she hated it because someone else was suffering. It's not a bad thing to care about others, but the last message a depressed person needs it this idea of sacrificing your own happiness for someone else. She returns to her old life because her brother, the old man, the kid, etc would be worse off without her. But again, her life isn't any better than it was. It's been a while since I read the book, but I also didn't enjoy it.

What is happening this year. If jessie liking romance isn’t a sign that we should arm ourselves with novels and protect our book shelves in 2022 then I don’t know what it is. I’m other words prepare yourself XD

I LOVE THE PLOT TWIST AT THE END OF THE VIDEO

I an still livid about The Maidens!!! Like honestly the setup of the plot sounded like something I would be into, especially because I was in a dark academia phase when I decided to pick it up but apart from the Mai character that I truly just hated and that incredibly bad plot twist at the end … what I absolutely despised the most was literally that this is never in a million years how police work works!!! I studied forensic science and we talked to a lot of people who will be brought into different crimes to support the police work with niche knowledge and it made me just so furious to see it so misrepresented in a book that so many people are apparently really enjoying!!! Like I am literally still upset about this book even though I read it more than one year ago

I recently read the midnight library. And the start was so depressing that I was pissed, but if I look at the overall book it was really nice imp.

loved this. maybe i just choose the wrong videos to watch, but i feel like more often i see you talking about books you havent read, than ones that you have, and i have to say the latter is just way more interesting. nice to hear your thoughts about them, and i think this premise is just so fun as long as the books are that right kind of /bad/ like the so bad its good, or in the case of the last one, just good! i feel the same abt reading romance books, i think im way more inclined to love the ones i pick up just because i basically never read them. its the same with thriller/contemporary mysteries. again not a genre i ever read, but when i do im so enthralled because im not used to it. then ill look at reviews online and everyone says its terrible lmao. but they probably know more about the genre and are able to be more critical!

Read The Midnight Library as one of our book club books. Having lost someone in 2020 in a manner similar to the main character’s situation it was definitely an impactful read for me. Plus the idea of multiverses and the decisions we make really intrigued me. For those reasons it’s a win in my book. I haven’t read the others mentioned but I’m definitely interested in reading “Twice Shy” now.

I truly loved The Midnight Library, it was definitely my favorite book of last year, possibly because I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was fantastic.

1:26 Mood. K but a friend of mine sent me this video cause of that last book and your reaction to it. The way you feel about that romance book is cute, the way you describe the romance in the book as cute, cute. Also, your comments section is amazing, so much love and positivity from your viewers - that alone has me tempted to binge watch your channel. I think your presentation is a little too... "flashy"? TikTok-y? for my tastes, but the fact that your viewers are just so... *good * says a lot about you and your content. So yeah, anyway, I hope that all sounds like a compliment, that's what I'm trying to say.
