Just throwing it out there, Mr. Birchum seems to really hold onto the idea that he's one of the manliest men around, so while he has an interest in bears, he may end up preferring to go for less masculine men like Karponzi to reaffirm that he's the most masculine man around. If the dude from his commercials was real, Birchum would probably see him as attractive, yes, but also a competitor and a threat to his own masculinity. There is no way Birchum can tolerate looking like the "woman" in a relationship.

Here is a thought: Richard starts spending more and more time with all his guy friends. Jeanie, while sulking about it, is asked by Karponzi what is wrong. Karponzi says maybe her dad is bi and that's why he is spending so much time with them. Jeanie processes that for a while and... decides she's okay with that. Then she tries to get Richard's friends to fight over him, but in her subtleties about "A lucky one of you might be spending more time here than you think" and so on and so such while they're all over visiting, she accidentslly makes them think Richard is gonna kidnap one of them. Them after they nervously join a Pubcrawl woth Richard, they black out at stop one and wake in Richard amd Wendy's bed, Richard having been turned away by hos friends' wives and so he put them to bed and slept on the couch while Wendy used what used to be Eddie's old room. And after the group go downstairs Jeanie shames them for leaving her dad with the tab. "I thought at least one of you'd be a gentleman!"

When I first heard about Mr. Birchum, one of my first thoughts was something along the lines of 'Wouldn't it be funny if a bunch of people started posting gay fan works of it, to the point where that was the first thing you found if you looked the show up online?', and that seems to be kind of what happened. I'm actually working on a fic myself. It's a bit slow going because I tend to be interested in really digging into a characters feelings, inner world, and relationships to other characters, and the source material gives precious little to work with on that front, I've had to depend a lot on what can be inferred from canon, or just invent things out of whole cloth. The worst part is - there's this old saying in fanfic circles that shipping something ironically is the first step toward shipping it sincerely - and that is the hell I seem to have fallen into. I am a fairly easy mark for enemies-to-lovers as a narrative trope and couple that with a deeply conservative man coming to grips with the fact that he's attracted to his male coworker and all of the emotional baggage that entails, and you've got the potential for a genuinely really interesting romance. Just the potential for it, mind you, in practice these characters are about as flat as the paper they would have been animated on 20 years ago. But, part of the wonder and joy of fanfiction is that it can give us things that canon can't or won't.

I too have looked into the “gay Birchim” phenomenon and the clear consensus -across multiple social media sites-is that Birchim is the bottom. Pretty much always. I’m so curious about what that implies (or exposes) about how we understand masculinity, identity and sex. Or it’s just lefties trolling conservatives in a really- time-consuming way 🤷‍♀️
