1. These are 9th & 10th graders. Our plan isn’t about this year. It’s about the next 8-10. The one thing everyone sees from top down about them is that they are NEVER SCARED of a challenge. Not one player on this team. Now imagine not being scared to fail for 8-10 years. Being willing to get uncomfortable and make mistakes for 8-10 years. Growth…. For 8-10 years. Remember, read the first sentence. 2. They coached themselves. This will give them an opportunity to get an understanding of what it’s actually like to be a coach and have to make adjustments on the fly. It’s not easy. They struggled in the second half because they weren’t able to adapt to our changes in patterns. Something I can now show them and teach them to because we have the film on it. 3. This was their first real test of actually playing together. They competed with COLLEGE LEVEL athletes for 16 minutes & it was their FIRST time ever playing a real game together….. First hand, I genuinely found it hard to do anything against their defense. I had 4-5 turnovers in the first 16 minutes. Now imagine other 9-10 graders……… 4. We punched them in the mouth in the 2nd half. They got hit with adversity and didn’t know how to control their emotions. & that’s okay. They are young. And I have plenty of time to teach them. Yesterday was the baseline. Now we work. 5. Im so proud of the leaders they’ve become for each other in the last month. They are all constantly talking. Sometimes so much that when the gym is quiet, it’s weird… I love it. 6. We know there will be loses. We’re getting the feeling of losing in right now, & learning how we should respond logically to find solutions to make sure it doesn’t keep happening. This is something other programs DONT do because they want to rush into action in April after only having 2 practices. But, what do I know. Im just a cocky kid.
