Tina Liu a lot of tattooist now don’t know nothing about patterns tbh all they do is draw and give it but let me tell you in every samoan pattern every single one has a meaning behind it and they’re very sacred but if the tattooist is an actual Samoan who knows then he’ll give you a secret pattern and that’s known as the protection pattern and he’ll tell you what it means but that’s depends

Last time I checked, we Samoans do make our own tapa mats they just aren't frequently used as everyday wear as the Tongans do. And considering that Samoan tatau is one of the oldest art forms, to say that there is any link to Tongan heritage is a pretty weak claim. Take pride in your own culture but don't try to claim ours was inspired by your own.

Fun fact: The word tattoo, or tattow in the 18th century, is a loanword from the Samoan word tatau, meaning "to strike". ... In Marquesan, tatu." Before the importation of the Polynesian word, the practice of tattooing had been described in the West as painting, scarring or staining.

Experience a live tatau session being done on a male (obviously with the permission of the tufuga) and see the reality of how its done and the pain all men go through when receiving this. I myself have one and never regretted it. And from there on you can learn bits and pieces of the culture and get a sleeve similar to Dwayne but not identical. That way you kind of feel like you understand it in your own way and appreciate the culture. Or tell the tattooist your background and your upbringing and he'll incorporate it into your sleeve 😊 just a thought bro but love your content. Side note: get it done in nz.

Every islands have different names for their own tattoos, and each patterns represent something about their culture and family. They all have different meaning... The leg tattoo is not called Kau vae, I believe the person who wanted one in the video did not know much about the tattoo itself. It is called the “soga’imiti” not kau vae.. Kau Lima yes that is correct (arm tattoo) which is a casual name for arm tatt.. Not to be a downy for the people on this video but i would love to have an expert explain the real meaning and actual names of these tattoos on the video instead of just casually calling it as whatever they can come up with...

Yes! The word ‘Tattoo’ originated In Polynesia from the name TATAU 👌🏾We’re what is known as “the original story tellers” & Tatau’s were used as a form of text to pass down stories & document events, family info threw generations. I real Polynesian never gets tattoos for no reason or coz it looks pretty or colourful or cool or the designs rad (like white peoples 🤣) There is ALWAYS a reason for us. Usually to Showcase family linkage, heritage, specific event, or tribute. Always a meaningful purpose. I am a Samoan, my dad comes from a well known Samoan family with high titles & land. I chose to get a malu at 29 (with consent from my parents) to represent my family n pay tribute to my mother. She organised it with the master tatau suluapi & made me get it in Samoa. My Malu marking mark my mum’s family line. My mum has 9 bro’s & sis and 1 daughter from each of my mums siblings have the Malu marlins of our family. Every poly has different marking it’s a a family brand. That’s why it’s so unique n special. You won’t get jumped lol but guys right don’t get what u don’t no. Get a mix of poly islands not just 1. Hence why the Polynesian culture has survived and thrives threw time😁

Honestly bro, in today's society, da usos & tokos are more friendly about it.. at least out here in the bay area. Although we would appreciate for people to be educated about the art they put on their body, it's still our own kind tatting them up lol

Every pattern tells a story of everyday life in the islands. From the shape of small fish, ocean waves, to the shape of spearheads stacked next to each other to weaving mats in some and to the extend lines of weaved ropes from pandanus dry leaf, all in fine minute detail... They did not just make the patterns out of thin air.. The original tatau tufuga (artist) conceptualised the patterns using their everyday knowledge of what they see and use as tools in pre coionial-era.

I wouldn't say you need to go through a test or anything. For me personally just learning, embrassing and acknowledging our culture and knowing that you'll educate others already kinda makes you worthy to have one. But it does piss me off when random people who know nothing about the culture and dont educate themselves just think "hey it looks cool I wanna get one". It's cultural appropriation at the end of the day, just be respectful and the fact that your learning all of this and are so interested just shows how open and willing you are👍
