Plant mail can be such a gamble. Looks like you hit jackpot win with this beautiful ( but slow) Esmeraldense! The struggle is real whether to quarantine new additions. I'm lucky to have a laundry room with great exposure that serves as my plant hospital/ quarantine area for now, but I'm eventually going to need those windows serving forever homes as my collection grows larger😹 So even if you do have space to quarantine, eventually you won't. 😻

Very interesting experience with your P. esmeraldense. I bought a baby one online about 8-9 months ago. I've sort of neglected it since then. It's still in its original pot, no pole and it's outside on the balcony (it's protected from the wind and direct sun though). It's doubled in size! So now I'm thinking of giving it a pole now. I'm in Sydney too so the growing conditions may not be ideal but not harsh either. I think it's quite a tough plant. Even it's been outside, I've had no issue with the plant whatsoever.

I'm having a hard time with moss moss poles. Last summer I put a monstera on it but whenever a new node grows, the root from it goes it and then after some day it turns brown and rot/dry. I've always kept it as moist as I would it with the soil and never crunchy (it's one of those with the back covered so doesn't try too quick) so I don't know if I kept it too wet or too dry. Now I started to remove some moss so that it is less dense and more airated (honestly much much less denser than yours) hoping for the best, so we'll see. But anyone has any help/recomendation?

@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy 5 ай бұрын
The moss pole will enable me to propagate/chop it without setting it back in progress due to the root system it will build within the pole. It's also an 'insurance policy' in case of rot within the pot.

Hi Jan! I just got an Esmeraldense too! A local shop had 3, and they said this is the second time in their five years of business they’ve had them, so of course I had to get one. I just got my first bottle of GT foliage focus. Do you flush the chunky mix occasionally? How much are you using per litre? I was going to start with 3 ML and see how that goes. 😊

I've got two questions please - First: Have you ever had mold in your soil mix? I've recently mixed new arroid mix that is as chunky as yours, and then I repotted some of my arroids into clear pots (as you inspired me to aquire for my plants). Now there are much larger air pockets in the soil mix, and I do see mold forming like little white/grey fuzzy stars. What to do, or is that normal? I know they're not harmful to the plants... And second question: You say you water the roots no matter where they are. When you transplant a new little plant into a new pot onto a new moss pole, there won't be roots in that pole for at least two to four weeks. But in your videos you say that you only initially water the roots in the pot, after that you only water the moss pole. How do you water in that transitional state? You wouldn't let those roots in the pot dry out, would you? Do you keep the moss pole moise with a sprayer for the first weeks or do you really put the bottle on top, making sure you water as much as it needs to reach the pot, as well? Thanks and regards from Germany. It's really hard to find large piece perlite over here! ...
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy 5 ай бұрын
Hey :) haven't had any issues with mould but just imagine your pot would be back .. you wouldn't see the mould & it wouldn't bother you. Unless the plant shows signs of suffering I wouldn't be worried. Regarding the second question - I do a combination of both, or choose one or the other depending on the time available etc. As long as you keep the roots moist it will work :) I'd say in 90% of instances I use the bottle upside down technique because it's clean & easy. I just water enough for the pot to be passively watered by the pole too :)

I think shock is a bit overrated. Plants go through changing conditions all the time. They always come out of this stronger. Even if shock exists, plants don't know difference between different shocks. It it's already "shocked" during shipping, best use that opportunity to repot it.
