I rented a Tesla Model 3 through the Uber / Hertz partnership for over 6 weeks and 10,000 miles. In this video I give my thoughts on the experience and discuss if you should consider this option.

In my area, a Tesla from Hertz for uber costs $280 after 7 weeks of renting one + $210 monthly incentive for renting an EV. You have to take into account depreciation when comparing renting vs buying one, and rideshare and personal insurance, and repairs and maintenance and $250 per tire, etc. In the end, it comes out to about the same as owning one if the weekly rate is under $300, but only if you do it full time. If you do it here and there, renting is not worth it.

For me its worth it. I spend $200 plus a week on ubers to work and am inbetween cars so its an opportunity to make extra money and have a car for the meantime.

In my state an EzPass transponder was attached to the windshield so I assumed that if I drove on a toll road I would be charged whatever the toll was. Little did I know that if the transponder is used, you will automatically incur a fee of between $17-$25/day ($129/week), which makes no sense unless you are driving in and out of Manhattan 2-3 times a day. Also, supercharging fees were billed through a third party and they are 3-4 times what you would normally pay directly to Tesla. I rented on two separate occasions and neither car had a charging cable, which I thought strange (my personal Tesla was being repaired, so I have a cable).

Hmm...Monthly payment + increased insurance costs + Maintenance items (especially tires) + Charging + depreciation + lack of vehicle if in accident VS. weekly cost + charging. It's not yours so if it breaks, not your problem in the long run, just long enough to trade it in and get another. Nor worrying about the depreciation of it after you have put a million miles on it. If you're in an accident, you're going to lose some money either way in deductible. Seems better off to rent IMO, at least when it comes to long-term use. Maybe not in the short-term, but I'm talking a year-by-year use breakdown.

If someone is scared of deprecation/maintenance/repair costs then they have no businesses being a self employed contractor. Those people would be better off working for a company as an employee, where they have less risk and less reward

In my area we can rent it for 6 months. It all depends, I pay average of $630/week with charge included. I make $2000/week. Yes it is high but for me to work till I can get my own is OK. If you not making enough with this rental or driving less than average, not worth it.

Liked the video! I rented through hertz for a week. More just to have a Tesla for a week for the future next car. For sentry since can pull up on screen that would be easiest way to pull up then record the screen. Mine came with the 110 plug and mobile connector so was nice to have that as well. Real bummer no app access though that would have been nice.

I rented through Uber just to see if a Tesla is something that I might want to do gig work with I ended up buying one with insurance and payment it's $1,000 a month I was paying $700 a week I would recommend getting a long range with the standard I had to charge twice a day with the long range I charge at home easily up to about 85% go out and make my $150 now I do multi app with several apps I usually get home with about 25 to 30% left try to stay at 100 to 150 Mi a day when I rented I didn't care about mileage is the only good thing I make double payments also getting it paid off as early as possible is also a good thing saves on interest

in my scenario I am in a pinch and do need a car. This has been great and zero issues hitting the 435 + 30 trips mark. Normally I do IT and Uber part time. I lost my job about a year ago and struggling to get back to work. Once I am back to work and comfortable with my new role, I will be purchasing a Model Y. I personally prefer the SUV model and sadly Hertz for our location doesn't have the Model Y's anymore. I must say in my own personal experience so far the 2 ladies there have been nothing but nice to me. Helping as much as possible due to the fact that I live in the Springs and rather not drive to Denver for every check in. However, I have heard all the stories at that location and thankfully none have come true for me at least.

I am renting through Hertz with Uber while my van is getting some bodywork this week. My deductible with the program is $1000 not $2500. Plus by paying Hertz $10.52 a day extra for added insurance I have extra coverage on my insurance with no deductible which is a must. So I am paying about $475 which makes it worth it for me for the week.
@EV_Ben
@EV_Ben Жыл бұрын
I'm glad its working for you! I still think $475/week is way too much. You could buy one of these cars for less than half that, and then your money is going toward paying it off rather than an endless cycle of payments. Pay careful attention to the paperwork. Deductible is $1k when you're not active on Uber, but jumps to $2,500 for accidents while you're active. At least that's how it is here. Thanks for watching!

@@EV_Ben You can't see it like that buddy, maybe you can finance a tesla for 700 a mont with a 5-10k downpayment... what about the insurence, maintanence, tires and most important Car depreciation? if it breaks, i just get a new one if its rented. if you buy a brand new tesla and use it for uber/lyft you must be crazy. the amount i drive i would have to buy a new tesla ever 3 years.

@@Snakeshit294 I pay 620 a month with insurance including gap and my credit score is 660 thats not good. The only real maintanence is the tires and break pads(not really as the car slows its self down via regen breaking) as there is no oil change or any fluids. The only filters are the cabin fliters. So Id say its not worth renting due to the fact you could own one for that amount of money. Also the battery is up to 300k miles.

I fully own my second car, a 2016 Toyota Corolla with only 85k miles that I only drive for part time for Uber. Guess what? I don’t have any kind of car payment on that. If I rented a Tesla, I am sure that my weekly payments would be like I’m paying for a car payment again. It would be high enough that it would also include that car payment plus gas. Your video surely shed insight on the numbers. I rather keep my fully paid Corolla that I only do part time driving for Uber. If I rented, I would have to slave away just to make the weekly payments. NO THANKS.

How do you use the Uber rental through Hertz with Lyft as well? Yeah and how much do you pay for insurance on your car and if you buy a new car and use it for Uber, which very few people recommend, your personal car goes through lots of wear and tear on your car and putting 60k miles on your own Uber car a year for 2 years your at 100k miles easily and you have to buy a new battery and with 100k on the Tesla good luck finding somebody to buy it batteries only last about that long…

This video failed to explain that car payment is for 60-70 months and as a full time Uber/Lyft driver your going to put at least 8k-9k miles on the Tesla every month. This video also fails to explain the Tesla will be out of warranty within the first 12 months of ownership with a full time Uber/Lyft driver. The best and ONLY car a full time Uber/Lyft driver should purchase new is a Prius or Camry. The Honda Accord is a good car as well and would round it my top 3 cars for Uber driving full time. NEVER purchase the Tesla used or new it's DEFINITELY not a car that's practical for Uber/Lyft driving full time. I also have to MENTION with the Tesla you'll be watching your life disappear having to fast charge at least 2-3 times a day or every 3-4 hours. This will definitely turn your 8 hour shift into a 10 hour shift every time and there's no way around it. I'm a full time Uber driver in Orlando, Florida and I've rented the Tesla for 4 months straight. I was making $2,100-$2,500 per week driving my personal gas car driving the full 12 hours per daily shift that Uber allows. I'm the Tesla in making $1,700-$1,850 per week and this is due to the constant 45 minutes per charge and charging at least 2-3 times per 12 hour shift. Whoever believes Tesla is the car to use for ride sharing is an idiot 😔
@KirbyZhang
@KirbyZhang 4 ай бұрын
sounds like in your market you drive a lot of miles. Teslas are not efficient driving long range. They're good for city driving (but there they have the wrong suspension). I only put on 2k miles/month driving 40 hours/week. I charge once every two days, either while waiting in queue at airport, or overnight at the city public works. My main complaint is the stiffness of the suspension, which I will be swapping for something softer.

@EV_Ben
@EV_Ben Жыл бұрын
Getting upside down is a potential issue, but not as much as with most gas cars because Teslas last for so long. If you drive for Uber full time you will get nowhere near 100k miles a year. Probably closer to 40-50k. If you're going to drive that much, the savings on gas, maintenance, and repairs will easily pay for the car, plus tax incentives make it an even better deal. I would recommend paying it off early to avoid getting upside down, but the overall long term financials make a ton of sense, speaking from personal experience
