In this video, we take my childhood 1998 GT Performer, and add a bit of a retro flare, with modern components. We media blasted all the components, and then powder coated them for the most durable finish. If you would like to see more bike restorations, make sure and leave a comment below! Thank you for watching!
This bike consists of:
-1998 GT Performer frame
- GT Show/Dyno Slammer Fork
- Custom GT Cheesegrater replica front sprocket
- Odyssey Springfield Brakes
- Skyway TuffII Wheels, 14mm rear and 3/8" Front
- Random Pegs
- GT Piston Stem, Powder Coated White
- Profile Cranks - Stripped and Powder Coated White
- Panaracer Tires
- Decals bought here: www.ebay.com/str/ultrahive

@@turtlelaboratories no that was a REALLY good idea, I’ve been waiting for GT to do this, but clearly they don’t value nostalgia like I do. I’m building a 97 right now, waiting for parts in the mail…you got some skills man, it was a great build and the little details impress the most.

When I was in the 6th or 7th grade my Pops bought me the most expensive freestyle bike our local shop had. It was a Haro Master that was absolutely SICK! He said the owner asked how old I was, and replied, “This is too much bike, and far too expensive for a kid his age”. Pops said, I think that’s a decision I need to make Sir, I want that bike. If you won’t sell it to me, I’ll go elsewhere. He sold him the bike, and I remember everyone around was insanely jealous over that bike. I rode it for a few years and put it in our shop, so I could keep it and one day do something like this. Well, Unfortunately it was stolen, and we never found it… It was around a 91-92 model I believe. I would LOVE to still have that bike, and pay you to restore it! You did a Helluva Job Sir, and Earned my Sub! Thanks for bringing us along. #Nostalgia 💯

I've had the Odyssey Springfield brakes and the concept of not having to adjust them is pretty cool. A few weeks ago I decided after a couple of years to change them for the Odyssey Evo 2.5 and it has been a giant change in terms of being able to choose the hardness of the braking. If you can choose to buy the Evo you will not be disappointed, if it is for exhibition and not used aggressively, the Springfield will be perfect for you.

The Original GT Mallet Stem would have been a nicer touch. It has the logo engraved and is a much better stem that the one in the video. As well as the 4 piece handlebar.
@turtlelaboratories
@turtlelaboratories Ай бұрын
The GT mallet stem was a threaded steer tube, vs a threadless, so without making one from scratch in a threadless variant, it wouldn't have worked. I fell in love with the piston stem, since that's when I was really into BMX, so I prefer the piston! I agree with the 4 piece bars. I actually purchased some repops to use for the build, but the build quality was so bad, I went the route I did. Original 4 piece bars are outrageously expensive!

It looks incredible, you have access to some pretty advanced equipment in this machine shop or whatever here…I mean, I’m a retired professional motocross racer & as a _grown up_ I’m an MIT Educated Electrical Engineer & I have access to barely any of this stuff…if it were me, I’d move the 990 mounts to under the seat stays, I mean, if you’re not into that because you think it could affect the 1980s throwback look, it’s got a threadless 1-1/8” fork, and a 1980s GT Pro Performer’d have a 1” Threaded fork with GT Mallet stem, plus 990 brakes at all (?) I can’t back that up for sure, I’m around the same age as you are _(I was in 7th Grade from Fall 1997-Summer 1998)_ I still have my 1996 Dyno Air (Dyno’s embodiment of the GT Performer), and that didn’t have 990’s on it at all, and my buddy from up the street had a same year GT Performer, and that didn’t have 990’s either, so I always thought of 990’s to be newer technology or something, but I don’t know if they for sure weren’t around in the 1980s

@turtlelaboratories
@turtlelaboratories Жыл бұрын
Yeah it is the "Bike Hand" repair stand. I got the one with the plastic head. I would say for occasional use, or for on-the-go use, it is good. I have built a number of bikes on it. It hold them up, and I have yet to have an issue, but it is very flexy. For a permanent stand, I will be going with another stand eventually. They do offer one with a metal head, and it could make the difference, but I do not know. With that said, it's not so bad that I am in search of an immediate replacement.

I recently got a ( 1997 GT Performer ) I noticed the GT logo stamp on the rear of the frame behind the seat post Is different than what I remember. The G is on top of the T just like the bike frame in this video. When and in what bikes did GT change the logo stamp on the back of the frame ?
@turtlelaboratories
@turtlelaboratories Жыл бұрын
I am not sure when the transition happened, but the G on top the T is more 90's. and the older, more rounded GT when they are side by side, is earlier from the 80's, possibly into early 90's. I am not 100% sure on this, but i have a few GT frames, and this holds up with what I have in my collection, and what I have owned in the past.

I remember GT being known for that stamp in the frame . When I seen the differance in the stamp in the bike I just got I was worried it might be a fake . I just want to make sure it’s not a fake

Nice build. Were you able to get the Panaracer tires to sit evenly on the mag wheels. Reason I ask is I have a Skyway bmx with the Tuff wheels and cannot seem to get the tires to mount evenly around. Tried soapy water, massaging the tire at low psi, but there is still a slight wobble. Nice tires but they dont seem to go work too wheel with mag wheels due to lack of a clincher/lip.

Hi George! I didn't have any problems getting my tires to seat. With that said, I still haven't ridden it, and it just hangs over my desk looking pretty.

That bike is sick! Do the mag wheels bend easily? I don’t do tricks or anything. Just ride 1 hour a day for exercise ✌🏼

I actually have not ridden it. The Skyway Mags are supposed to be pretty tough, though!

How much for one of those replica cheese grater sprockets in 28 tooth? Would love to put that on my 2021 Pro Performer.

Hi George, I linked to his ebay store in the description. I am not sure he is making them anymore, but you can try sending him an ebay message!

About the brake issue: would it be possible to Relocate the brake mounts to the underside of the seat stay tubes? I know you'd have to re-powder, but worth it to remedy the rubbing issue? AND KEEP THAT SICK 'ONE OFF' CHEESE GRADER SPROCKET?!?!

This is essentially the best method, and what I would like to do, but I dread blasting all that powder coat back off!
