That commercial song was an absolute banger. You and Jackson both understand that music is power and thus you push its limits and show just what it's capable of. Music unites us all. I know we all love to say "Beacon of light, beacon of hope" whenever we see that bridge, but I think it's time to give context as to why that bridge says that: the Lower Trenton Bridge has been around for over 210 years. When it was first built, the bridge was made out of wood and cedar shingles. The bright neon lights didn't come until August 1935. In 1910, The Trenton Chamber of Commerce conducted a slogan contest for the city’s residents in hopes of devising a phrase that would spread the fame of the capital’s industrial achievements. The contest, whose winner would receive $25 (around 800 dollars in today's money), received 1,478 entries. A local lumberyard owner at the time, S. Roy Heath, fabricated the winning slogan, which originally was backwards to how it is seen today reading, “The World Takes - Trenton Makes”. He declined the prize. The sign was actually taken down at one point before. During the Great Depression, the bridge did not have a sign for close to 10 years. The slogan refers to the fact Trenton once had a prominent manufacturing industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trenton was most famous for its iron, steel and rubber industries!

One of the wonders of the Northeast in 2023 is the ability to attend Washington Spirit games despite living in Philadelphia. I usually take a Northeast Regional to DC, enter the Metrorail system, and pop out a healthy walk from Audi Field. The return trip normally involves the last train out of DC, arriving in Philly just after midnight.

The state of American public transit - Going through the densest part of the country with the best public transit in the country, and it takes 25 hours
@lordofduct
@lordofduct Жыл бұрын
To be fair they took mostly local public transit routes over a very long distance. This would be like going from say Rotterdam to Berlin distance wise all on local trains. And honestly looking up that route on google maps shows taking several different trains for even an optimal route. If I was going to take non-flight transit from DC to Boston I would just take the Acela line which is zero transfer shot from DC to Boston taking about 6 hours 45 minutes. I guess you might not call the Acela/Amtrak "public transit"... but it is? Like what is public transport really mean? Transport taken enmasse by the public? Or does it have to be specifically owned and operated by the government? Amtrak technically has its primary share holder being the US government. I personally can't really find a good definition for "public transport" that excludes amtrak without excluding lots of other privately owned local transit companies that are often called public transport... With that said... yes the US has atrocious public transit. But the northeast actually is like one of the few spots that does have some actual transit infrastructure. And that specific route is actually a super active zero transfer route! I'd argue it's really an achievement that there is a way to take a series of smaller shorter local transit hops along that line and actually pull it off. I could only imagine what Rotterdam to Berlin would take taking smaller route trains considering that the route google suggests includes the entire Germany section of the trip being a highspeed train line and it ends up taking 2 hours longer to travel the distance despite being comparable distances using service lines comparable to Amtrak/Acela.

"Um, don't get yelled at, I don't know" - Aleena Tzu, the Art of War. Shnorpleshnaff! Definitely weird to see Grand Central so empty like that and yet so cool at the same time. Some interesting stuff about GCT's ceiling: Original plans called for the ceiling to contain a skylight, but money and time ran out, so a mural was painted instead. It was conceived in 1912 by architect Warren and painter Paul César Helleu. The mural was executed in 1913 by James Monroe Hewlett and Charles Basing of Hewlett-Basing Studio. They were assisted in the design by Helleu and multiple astronomers, and in the painting by more than 50 painting assistants. Around 63 electric bulbs were installed to amplify the visual impact of the stars! Less than two months after the terminal opened, one commuter noticed that the ceiling's design was actually backwards, west is east and east is west. Even though all the constellations are now where they should be, Orion is still reversed! He's in the correct location, the constellation itself is backwards!

One thing I noticed in this video is something that I have also seen on the West Coast: while long distance and inner urban transit systems are recovering, smaller suburban routes seem to have very sparse ridership. And it can be a quite sudden transition, like within 5 miles of a city center, the buses and trains will usually be busy, and then outside of that, it suddenly decreases to only 2 or 3 people on a lot of lines.
@MilesinTransit
@MilesinTransit Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they were ever that busy though! If I had to guess, I'd say that smaller systems have actually had better ridership recovery rates because they were always a lot more reliant on people who have no other option but to take transit, rather than middle class office workers.
@glowingfish

@@MilesinTransit That is a good point! A lot of times it is hard to objectively remember things. One thing I have noticed, though, is that the threshold of size and density for transit to be useful can fall off very suddenly. Portland, Oregon is famous for being transit friendly---but if you go to Vancouver, Washington, across the river, while transit is okay, it quickly drops off. But in terms of size and density, there isn't a gigantic difference. So a city of 300,000 people at 2,000 people per square mile will have maybe a tenth of the transit options of a city of 600,000 people at 4,000 people per square mile. (Numbers made up for convenience) I don't think there is anywhere in the NEC that can't support local bus service---even "rural" Connecticut is dense enough to have many passengers. But often people's attitude towards transit drops off outside of cities. Also, in that region, since there are lots of long distance trains and buses, the local buses might not be very popular? But I don't know, it has been a while since I have been there, I mostly know about the West Coast. Some of my Oregon videos, including my MAX speedrun video, might put some of my misconceptions into context!

That stream you went over is not the Baltimore River but Gwynns Falls, which empties into the Patapsco River. The stream was named for Richard Gwinn, who opened a trading post along it in 1669 (nice). Despite the name, it doesn't have a waterfall, but its rough, rocky nature caused John Smith (yes, THAT John Smith) to say how the stream tumbled over "felles". And the Patapsco River's name comes from Algonquian pota-psk-ut, meaning "backwater" or "tide covered with froth". Ah yes, making people walk across the tracks of the Northeast Corridor at Martin State Airport...what could go wrong? Martin State Airport is named after the Glenn L. Martin Company which once produced tons of military aircraft there. The state ended up purchasing it in the 1970s, and it's jointly a general aviation relief airport and a base for the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard.

The NJTransit ticket paper has not changed much since the first self-serve ticket machines were introduced around 1998. Once Secaucus and then Newark Airport (or was it the other way around) opened, they added a mag stripe for the fare gates at those stations, and then more recently they added the white box for the QR code so the conductors can scan them (which is now also what opens the fare gates at the two stations that have them). But the two different off-brand renderings of "NJ Transit" on the front and zero on-brand ones anywhere on the ticket remain constant.

But then - the next bus stop is right around the corner, only 10 meters away, the local train station is a 20 minutes walk away and from from there I can get a train to the big city three times per hour and even a few long distance trains per day. And I am complaining!!!! 😅

@TooSmalley
@TooSmalley Жыл бұрын
I don't know if its the same in most of Europe but Public Transportation here usually refers to state-funded services that tend to be limited to said state. You can get direct transit between cities and multiple states but thats gonna be through train services like Amtrack or bus services like Greyhound or Flexibus. DC to Bostons is about 450 miles (724km) which is about 8-9 hours in car.
@wookie2222
@wookie2222 Жыл бұрын
@@TooSmalley Here in Germany, it is basically the same. We have Deutsche Bahn (in the end funded by the federal government) that operates long distance routes between cities and states and is involved in some states' public transport. On a state level, we have mostly state funded public transport running busses and trains and sometimes also operating the busses inside the cities. Since we have 16 states and each one of them tends to make things a little different, it would take far to long to go into detail. But let me take as example my route to the next big city: I can use trams and busses to get to the main station (or just walk). The busses and trams are operated and funded by my city (VBBr). From there, I could either take a long distance train to Berlin (operated and funded by Deutsche Bahn/federal gov.) or - what I usually do, since they are going three times every hour - I would take the local commuter train to Berlin operated by ODEG (50% owned by the state owned italian railway company and 50% privately owned). And since a couple of months, we have the 49-Euro-Ticket, which is valdi for all public transport all over Germany (49 Euro per month). This makes it basically possible to travel from Freiburg im Breisgau to Flensburg for only that ammount of money, as long as one only takes public transport. Using long distance routes, the ride would take around 9 hours, by car around 10 hours and by public transport anything between 15 and 20 hours.

Metuchen isn't a thing, it's a person! Metuchen is derived from Chief Matouchin of the Raritan people who first lived in the area. It's like how Wyandanch on the LIRR's Ronkonkoma Branch was named after Chief Wyandanch of the Montaukett...despite the fact the Montaukett never lived in what's now western Suffolk County as their tribal homeland is what's now Montauk. I love how many indigenous place names there are in NJ and Long Island. LI and NJ definitely have the best place names in the country! And speaking of, Mystic is another name of indigenous origin, derived from the Pequot term "missi-tuk", describing a large river whose waters are driven into waves by tides or wind! I appreciate the wicked cool space tunnel at New Haven Union Station. It reminds me of the Star Tunnel part of the Space Mountain queue at Magic Kingdom, which coincidentally enough also goes under train tracks as the queue goes under the WDW Railroad in order to go from Tomorrowland to the actual ride. Add some Star Tunnel music from the queue to New Haven Union, and it would be perfect. Something else I love about New Haven Union is how each bench features a model train on display, such a nice touch. It's the little things that count, after all!

"MARC Train MARC Penn Line Train" - DC Union Station 2023. That MARC ticket does look legit! Whether you like the Maryland flag or not, there's no denying that the Maryland flag is unique. While other states put their shield/coat of arms in the middle of the flag, in the case of Maryland...it makes up the WHOLE flag! It's the 17th-century heraldic banner of arms of Cecil, 2nd Baron Baltimore. The black and gold is Lord Baltimore's banner (from his father, George Calvert 1st Baron Baltimore) and is also on the flag of Baltimore (though the Baltimore flag has the Battle Monument in the middle which commemorates the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812), while the red and white is called the Crossland banner and is from his grandmother. During the Civil War, Marylanders who sided with the Confederacy affiliated with the Crossland banner while those who fought for the Union wore the Lord Baltimore banner. The flag in its present form was first flown in 1880 but wasn't officially adopted as the state flag until 1904.

Back in the day I did the Chinatown buses from DC to NYC and from NYC to Boston, but at this point in my life, "just take Amtrak" is my mantra. My fiancé and I have been dating "long"-distance between DC/Baltimore (I moved) and south Jersey and I have spent more hours of my life scrutinizing that Perryville-Newark gap and staring at the Cecil County transit schedules than I care to admit. MTA is working on closing the gap, but of course by the time they manage it we'll be married and under one roof. The Perryville MARC trip was probably only as slow as it is because it is a local train; the express trains can, I believe, reach speeds of 125 mph which matches the Northeast Regional. I've seen schedules for the Baltimore-Philly leg of the Northeast Regional as low as 69 minutes (nice).

In LA to reach the Reagan Presidential Library by public transport I had to set off very early to catch the last of the N/B services morning train to Simi Valley then wait 30 mins for the bus that cris crossed the whole city before it reached the other end then walk several miles and then do the same returning catching about the only afternoon s/b train.

Fun fact: it would have taken the same time to get from far south-western to far north-eastern Germany using only local / regional trains as well, roughly 530 miles distance compared to the roughly 400 miles distance from D.C. to Boston. So Germany isn't much different in that aspect, just that you'll stay more time on the train than using local bus services
@carmarcam98
@carmarcam98 6 ай бұрын
Decided to take a look at Spain here and, only on local transit, you could go all the way from Madrid to the French border in a day! (767km, or 480mi) It also involves merely two trains; the one lone regional train from Madrid to Barcelona (9h30 with no amenities other than a toilet!) Then any regional from Barcelona to the border town of Portbou, sadly no way to get to France. One could also take one of the two Regional Madrid-San Sebastian trains and then commuter rail to the border town of Hendaye. Though that is a shorter route
@eechauch5522
@eechauch5522 Ай бұрын
I mean, I’m not sure which exact route you had in mind in Germany, but it doesn’t take a day (as in ~24h) to do a similar route like this in Germany. Since you mentioned south west Germany I picked Freiburg as my starting point and going to Hamburg (which is about 500mil, so similar to DC-> Boston) takes a little under 13h (assuming all 6 transfers are reached). Berlin is a similar story at around 14h. So it’s still slow, but it’s not 25h slow.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting Ай бұрын
@@eechauch5522 actually pretty much an entire day, to be precise 20hrs51min to 22hrs21min. Freiburg is good, but still not in the far south-west. Neither Hamburg nor Berlin are in the far north-east. From Berlin you can go another 3 hours north by train to get to Stralsund, and 1 more hour going east from Stralsund to Sassnitz. I looked up the ride from Weil am Rhein, located far in the south-west at the border to Switzerland and France, to Sassnitz on Rugia in the far north-east. Looking it up right now at 11:10 AM I'd even have a similar departure time like he did in the video: he bought the ticket at 11:23 AM and the train departed at 12:15 PM. In my example from Germany the train would depart from Weil am Rhein at 12:02 PM and take only 20hrs51min, with 9 transfers / 10 trains being necessary to get to the other end of the country. Taking only regional services obviously: 1) 12:02 PM Regional Express Train RE7 to Karlsruhe Central Station, 18 stops, arriving 2:21 PM 2) 2:28 PM Commuter Train S9 to Mannheim Central Station, 14 stops, arriving 3:22 PM 3) 3:35 PM Regional Exrepss Train RE70 to Frankfurt (Main) Central Station, 15 stops, arriving 4:45 PM 4) 5:19 PM Regional Express Train RE30 to Kassel Central Station, 11 stops, arriving 7:34 PM 5) 7:46 PM Regional Train RB83 to Göttingen Station, 10 stops, arriving 8:45 PM 6) 9:04 PM Metronom Regional Express Train ME RE2 to Uelzen Station, 19 stops, arriving 11:47 PM 7) 11:59 PM Metronom Regional Train ME RB31 to Lüneburg Sation, 3 stops, arriving 12:25 AM 8) 12:45 AM Erixx Regional Express Train erx RB83 to Büchen Station, 3 stops, arriving 1:08 AM 9) 4:58 AM Regional Express Train RE1 to Rostock Central Station, 14 stops, arriving 6:50 AM 10) 7:00 AM Regional Express Train to Sassnitz Station, 22 stops, arriving 8:53 AM Most of the transfer times are rather short, but you'll notice the 3h50min transfer at Büchen - a common issue when traveling regional services in the middle of the night

I work near grand central and am usually in or around it between midnight and 2am. I used to come into Penn at 1:40-1:50am. The S train is a life saver if the 7 isn't running into manhattan overnight, and actually that happens a lot. If it's not the 7, if the 1-3 lines are out near midtown, they run the S for some reason I don't understand, which happens far less often so you hit it on a lucky night. As someone who had to do that trip regularly at that time period, you'd be surprised at how often I was able to use the S. I'd say at least 25-30% of the time I was able to use it. Also that time of night, the 7 would have NOT got you to grand central on time, they run every 20 minutes after 1. This is why I walked to work on the east side every 1:45am from Penn before grand central. The 1 to 7 transfer took minimum 30-40 min total ride time, as for some reason every train is timed to get to Times Square right after the 7 leaves, as you found out. That's no joke and I don't get it. Also at that time, I guarantee you the single M42 running is going westbound. I have caught that bus only ONCE at 1:45 going eastbound. So that option is out too. So if the S wasn't running and i was actually in a hurry, either I'd walk to the BDFM, get a citibike, or at worst, get a Lyft. Citibike was guaranteed 5 min or less.

Bad news, Ned Lamont is proposing a 44% cut to SLE service and about 12% to the New Haven line. Ridership and costs. I trust Ned, so it must be a tough situation in the outer burbs for offpeak rail. Counterproductive but it’s the news.

@@kitchin2 I hate to add to the bad news, but coming from Boston (I'm a regular commuter on the Providence Line from it's namesake city) and MBTA hasn't seen the expected gains to justify extension beyond Wickford Junction, so they've tabled any ideas about extending to Westerly for the time being. It's a shame but it makes sense because Wickford Junction, which just opened 11 years ago, nor the also new-ish TF Green/Warwick Stations (2010) have not hit the ridership targets that the T had hoped for when they were more ambitious about extending into Rhode Island. A trip to Kingston or Westerly could one day be in the cards if ridership were to improve though and with the T's plans to electrify the entire Providence Line, that would have an immense benefit for future extension plans down the line. On the bright side, Rhode Island did gain another station on the line with the opening of Pawtucket/Central Falls, which is how I discovered Miles' channel!
