It was 70 on Christmas Day in Kentucky. Alas no hunting LOL. My Son bought a hoarder house to flip and I found 7 flatirons in excellent condition. 4 were donated to a Nature Preserve with a working 1800's farm! Best of finds to you Brad in 22!

The piece of glass showed elongated bubbles with is indicative of it being rolled into a sheet form. It could very well be from a colonial window. The tint could be due to iron contamination in the glass. Entertaining as always. Thanks!

Could it just be an old stained glass window pane??? My stained glass window panes from my 1875 house are not perfect... but then again many of my house windows still have wavy glass that are clear glass... edited to add that I do have green stained glass panes along with amber blue red

It appears to be bottle glass, part of the side panel of perhaps a case gin. The rough edge looks like just a rough break, the opposite side of that edge being rounded forming a corner.Brad kept moving it (LOL) so was hard to tell for certain.

@@jdjd7127 Stained glass was not really a thing in 1700's/early 1800s colonial houses. Nearly all glass had a tint in Early Glass due to the sand properties and firing abilities. They can tell eras of glass by the color. That glass is "colonial green" and looks like window glass.

My father was born in rural Cape Breton, NS, in 1930. When he was a toddler one of those irons was knocked of the wood stove and landed on his leg. The burn left a nasty scar he then had for 80+ years to remind him to stay clear of hot things. His branding was the shape of the footprint of your new iron!

That glass is part of a colonial window. There is a house down the street from me and the windows were made from the glass bottle glass. Glass bottles were even melted down to make the windows and the bottom of the bottle was still there in the panes for some. I was amazed to see the bottoms in the windows still. The color they used back then was mostly that coca cola green type color. But i do see clear white ones as well. I am in Mass.

Good idea testing the XP Deus ll at that location, Brad. Your small vee shaped iron piece with the blob on it, may very well have been a movable vent cover at the base of an old cast iron stove. The blob being the handle to cover or uncover the vent. A few of the reasons I enjoy your vids is because of how much you enjoy making them, the respect you give this hobby, your equipment and the companies that supply them, as well as the respect you give both the land and the landowner's requests and last but not least the respect you have for yourself, always willing to go the extra mile to bring your best work to us over the years and honoring our requests, thus giving us respect. Thank You, Brad.

My Grandmother who passed away in the early seventies used those irons like you found. She had about 4 of them and as one cooled off she'd get another out of (the oven or the stove, I forget).

They usually heated those flatirons on top of the wood or oil stove in the kitchen. At least my grandmother did until the house got electricity in the late 60s! Heating the irons on the stovetop allowed for easy transfer of cold iron to hot one!

I can almost guarantee your finds are based on simultaneous multifrequency. When I put up my F75 and AT 3 years ago for multi frequency I went over my normal cellar holes. The finds were amazing, especially in and amongst iron. Especially small silver coins I had missed with my old machines. I'd never own a single frequency machine again for hunting Colonial New England. Lotsa hype over the XP now, but I'll wait until guys in our area get them and learn them before I dump 1600 bucks. If it is better than what I'm swinging after review, of course I'm in !! Love the flat iron, I've found a few too, they are pretty cool.

@David GONZALES ... a similar item was used to allow food to boil in a cast iron pot or frying pan without the contents boiling over the sides and making a mess. Another trick I learned from my Aunt Helen, who had one of the first cook shows on TV, was to place a wooden spoon across an open pot of spaghetti to also prevent unwanted boil overs. I've tried it and it really works! My Great Aunt had a set of irons like the one Brad found that were preheated on a woodstove. But, we were not allowed to touch them until we were in high school. I used to think it was because my Father cared and didn't want to see us go through the pain of being burned. Years later, I learned that he was more concerned with the idea that hurt kids didn't do their chores!

My Granny lived in a old country home built in the 1800's in the middle of a national forest in se Oklahoma from 1948 until the late 80's. She had half a dozen of those old irons that were of different ages, but since her house had the old dog run through the middle of it, and double doors at either end plus doors off the dog run into different rooms of her home. She used them as door stops, and they all had handles on them so she use to sit them on the tail end, and lean them back on the handles. Your correct some of her iron's had removable handles to that fit into slots in the tops, and she told us that they were like that, because the handles didn't take the heat from the coals in the fire, and would eventually break off if they were used often.

Clear was the hardest color in glass. That is one reason early windows were often “ stained glass”. Probably a large bubble was blown shaped into a cylinder , cut down the side and laid out flat in a kiln to cool slowly.

Instead of leaving those pieces of glass against the tree, why not keep them including fragments of old pottery that you find and grout a six pane window with them. Call it “a window into the past“ I collected Seaglass from all over Scotland and England for that very purpose. Beautiful

the first iron you found was hollow, they would put water inside. This new one is solid, they relied on the think iron to hold heat. One can see how irons developed as tech advanced, late 19th CE they were heated with kerosene or another flam chemical.

Some especially in the north eastern region used coal in the irons themselves. These are typically the ones that are highly decorative in appearance. Then of course the heavy cast ones were better irons, because combination of heat as well as shear weight made the creases come out sharper, and pushed the wrinkles out better. But the all were bad about burning the women folk, and many a scorched linen shirts, table clothes, and cotton sheet also were the results too in many cases. They say that the ladies and young ladies alike had to be extra careful around the open fireplaces too back then, because the frilly petty coats caught on fire, and typically by the time anyone noticed, it was too late the burns were too great to survive in those years. Mainly because no one knew how to best deal with third degree burns over a large portion of the body, and lack of antibiotics to fight the infection.

That glass looks to be early New England glass by the color. Glass professionals can tell where it was made by the color from the different elements in the local sand. "Black Glass" was dark green or green like yours, usually from Mass (Sandwich Glass Works etc.) and rare as most glass was shipped from England. True clear glass was not widely available till much later. All glass had a tint. It looks to be window glass as there seems to be a channel or "rabbit" on the straight edge for accepting lead or affixing to a wood "stile". Elongated bubbles mean it was formed into a flat sheet for window pane glass.

I think the nox 800 or the previous deus would have found that ornate button. It might have been an area you didn't sweep the same direction or right on top of. But to do it thoroughly, you have to go all metal mode. Nice selection of finds.

Brad, interesting enough I was looking into good quality detectors. I found and watched several videos on other channels with a real nice detectors. As it so happens it is the same detector your using in this video.

Another great video Brad. I think that iron also had a removable handle, under the front clip and over the back. Thanks again.
