***** About Venison for Dinner *****
Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000 miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I used to work with Holstein cows for over 20years, ten years I a robotstall. My secret trick if they don't let the milk down is, scratch the udder with your nails not hard just like if you would give the cow goosebumps. It works on heifers who is newbies and other cows. Like your videos, hello from Sweden.

I love that you addressed numbness and hand milking. I had mild carpal tunnel but then injured my neck during my last pregnancy in a way that causes numbness from my shoulder to my finger tips. That healed with A LOT of chiropractor appointments and would only flair up when I overused (cutting meat during butchering weeks was a huge aggravation and cutting lots of vegetables and fruit for canning projects). Fast forward a year later and we got our first milk cow. Nothing aggravated that old injury like hand milking. I had the muscle soreness in my hands and forearms but additionally I had constant pins and needles in my entire arm and I would wake in the middle of the night with shooting, excruciating pain and my middle and ring finger would be ice cold like they lost circulation. I've had 4 natural births, but this had me up at night in tears. I kept pushing in hopes it would get better (while seeing my Chiro multiple times a week). It got worse with everyday. I struggled to pick up the baby. I was dropping jars. I couldn't open anything with a screw top because my grip was so weak and numb. I was honestly devastated because here I was finally milking, my dream come true and I couldn't function! Finally at 6 weeks I caved and bought a milk machine, used. It was expensive and I had to skip 2 months of grocery budget to make it work (thank goodness for food storage!) but it changed everything for me! I can have wonderful, clean, raw milk and still function! After many more chiropractor visits I was able to get mostly back to that state where it only flairs from overuse. I can sleep at night again and I don't have constant tingling. If anyone else is in that position, know that you can have a milk cow and not live in pain. It might not be quite as romantic with a milker but all the other benefits are still there and its pretty nice to strain milk and see a crystal clean milk filter lol.

Love this. We were blessed finding our cow this January, as she is a saint, but the first few milking converting to hand milking from machine, and me not having milked anything for over a decade, the sore hands and challenges were real!! Crazy enough, my momma barn cat, who is normally a great milk barn employee, decided to use me and Girlie (cow) as steps to the rafter, it's been a crazy morning, lol.

Fun video 😁 I can relate on the fussy dairy animal level but on a much smaller scale. Goats love to kick the bucket over, jump around like a rabbit and lay/sit down on the bucket which is so frustrating but I don't have to worry about them hurting me with the kicking so that's a big difference.😂

buy cattle panels or some post in ground and some cross post three way. The cows must have limited access to the hayrolls or they stomp on it. Of course good way to make ground fertile. Can drop rolls in different parts of pasture and then in spring have bunch of grass growing up.

I have a question about the pooping in the stanchion. I saw a video near the beginning of my milk cow research where a couple were trying to quickly milk their cows and get off to church but the cows each pooped like three times. The couple were really impatient about it and said this happened a lot. But in your videos I never see the cows (your owned cows) poop while milking. You mentioned in this video that they learn that its bad manners. How do you teach them that? Is cows pooping while milking a big issue with all cows and you have to train it out of them? What should I know about this?
@VenisonforDinner
@VenisonforDinner Жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's that people are rushing them. For example if they are bedded down and you get them up, you should give them a few minutes to do their business. I guess it's also a control thing as well, so you want to show them who is boss. So you are giving them the time to poop before milking. Getting them into that habit is important. I hope that answers your question.

Yeah you really want to wood chip that sacrifice pasture. You want a deep wood chip because it causes foot problems to let them sit in mud and (other things) like that. You also risk making yourself and your family sick. Mainly because if you are taking cows outside of a organic system into your system they may bring with them strong issues. As they might have got some level of antibiotics. It's like playing loto with that kind of stuff. Robot milking cow, the times we live in right lol. I don't know why but the concept of robot milking cows is so much fun to think about it. Because those cows suck around humans doing the same thing but they are so chill with that robot system.

And never fails it's always somebody that's part of the itty bitty titty club. 😂 At least this year's have all been decent temperament.
