The difference between an apprentice and a master is that the master knows how to cover his mistakes. This guitar is already developing character!

Steve needs to get an award for most patient teacher ever! Another luthier would have had an entirely different reaction upon seeing a gaping crater (it wasn't gaping -- but I'm sure it felt that way) after hours and hours of intensive labor. Steve took a pause with a slight grin and proceeded to help devise a plan to repair the goof without harping on it and making you feel badly -- in fact, as a stand-up teacher would, he took the blame for not showing you how to use the sander properly in that curved area. People learn the most valuable lessons from making mistakes. I can almost guarantee you'll never make that same mistake twice with a sander, and Steve will always remember to show future students the technique of using a power sander in that tight bend (or opt for sanding paper instead). Even a certain fellow builder in the background got some value out of learning to make a repair after her initial OMG face! 😂😂😂 Sorry you got such a sinking feeling cause that's THE WORST (and doesn't go away for a very long time either!) -- but you worked together and devised a solution that now gives the guitar a unique artistic element that nobody will know was put there to cover a slight unplanned hiccup. Thankfully, the sander didn't cut through enough to affect the tone in the slightest. Happy ending!

I love to see how people respond to adversity and you three reacted as if it were no big deal. The solution sounds FANTASTIC too! Bravo.

Turning a "bad thing" into a "good thing." This adds an interesting serendipitous element to your guitar build that may end up being the most talked about and unique characteristic of your prized guitar building experience. It may even add something positive to the guitar's overall resonance and sound profile.

You finally made me cry. When I saw a RO sander with a 100 grit disk…. Mr S is a true human being as he took some responsibility. Says a lot about him. I suspect he and Joyce will pull it out for you just nicely. I also wondered about the truss rod access.

I knew it was coming but it was still painful to watch. The responsibility squarely lies on Showalter for putting a 100 grit WMB in a complete sanding novices hands. But I really appreciate how he shouldered the blame right and started looking for remedies. How can I fix this is the mantra of a great craftsman. A card scraper and sanding block would be a slower but safer approach. Another fix could be a sound port with a wide-ish rosette. Yep, lots of armchair advice here. Joyce's expression is priceless!

Great teachers and leaders, in any capacity, always do what Steve did. Take accountability as a way of taking the pressure off their students (or employees). Then they take it as a learning opportunity to make something good come from what was unexpected! Steve demonstrated this skill masterfully!! I learned this after 34 years of teaching music and the last 8 years working in corporate America. The leaders who I have learned the most from, and who I model my management approach after, always know the buck stops with them! This allows growth and creativity at every level! So this video, and the accidental over sanding, really turned this into a teaching/ learning opportunity that is so far above just building a beautiful guitar!

That's a rough mistake, but the solution is quite interesting. I keep finding that I'm learning constantly through this build. Wow, gotta watch the sides. I've personally been to Virginia once, and the trip actually took me pretty close to where Showalter Guitars is located (too bad I didn't know about Steve and his shop then). So I'm looking forward to seeing the solution implemented. While I would be putting Missouri or Kansas in, I think the idea of Virginia, your home, is a great idea. And I so appreciate learning, and it seems like I'm constantly learning through this build. Thanks Jeremy and Steve and Lauren!

Really enjoying this series, my first acoustic build I flattened the sides entirely with scrapers and hand sanding because I was so scared of sanding through, took hours and hours haha. Really love the solution you came up with to cover the sand through and it’s a great reminder of the process and your own experience building it.

Hey Jeremy. I see that Heart member Ann Wilson is selling off some of her guitars and gear through Reverb starting in a few days. Some fantastic guitars including a 1957 Strat and some Les Pauls. You might want to check it out and do a feature on it. They have posted a video of her showing some of her guitars and giving some interesting info on them.

I’ve always wondered if you’re building a custom if you can shape a neck to your hand like fitting a pair of shoes? I have small hands and have trouble muting the 6th string with my thumb.

added an XLR input to my 1970 fretless P bass. Was connecting the standard input to the new connector... drilled right through the body! Solution? Inlay a pearl hexagon to cover the hole. Visible only from the back...ouch!

Not to be a safety bummer, but, you have to make sure you air pressure is below 30 psi before you spray yourself with an air hose. In fact, you never should use an air hose to clean yourself. It can break skin and force fragments into your skin.
