While I am trimming and sanding wooden parts I reflect on how I am going about promoting my craftwork and what I know I should be doing better.
Discussion of KZfaq, Etsy, Pinterest, Instagram, craft shows and my own website www.lowbot.co.uk.
Insights into buyers of craftworks and why they buy.
I sell plans and automata on my website and also in my Etsy shop.

Great video. The creation of content on the fly is difficult for most. Talking, unscripted while working is even harder! As someone who got their start doing contemporary craft shows I completely agree that it is the best sounding board and the cash in the pocket brings an exhilarating feedback loop. There is nothing like the thrill of the paint drying or the welds cooling as the work is loaded into the van prior to the roadtrip to the show. The setup frenzy followed by the artist tribe coming round to see what's new. The interactions with the buyers, collectors and general interesting people is in stark contrast to the hours spent alone in the studio. You realize you are not alone. (I guess social media fills some of that void) Then when a sale is made it means so much more. Validation. I have spent a career balancing production and one of kind work. I have had as many as 9 employees and in those days felt like I was working to keep them employed. It helps to gain a wider audience, so at times it is a necessary. Making what I want. Making for a client. (constraints are good) Pushing my skills and craft. All interest me. Unusual commissions that rhyme with your aesthetic are exciting and can lead to new areas of exploration. Thank you for your video. I'm a big fan Phillip.

It looks very interesting but I will not be getting there. It is a bit of a run out from here. It would have been good to meet.

We have internet banking here and for the markets we give customers the ability to pay with a bank transfer option if they don't have cash on them. There is an ATM nearby and some go and get some cash and come back but there's quite a few that will do the bank transfer.

A bank transfer cuts out the service fees so you are winning there. I am surprised that many people are happy to do it in a market environment though. It will be easier when we can just bump phones.

Thank you for these videos. I have been sold out of stock for the past month and focusing on finishing up the robot series so I can move on to something more exciting. How do you balance the desire to make more inventory with the desire to create? I find myself dreading making inventory because it takes so much time away from making new things. I also am having problems deciding on a price point. I have my prices set where they need to be for me to continue to create and replace my equipment over time, but not high enough where I will be able to expand and upgrade my shop. Have you done any videos about the subject of pricing and how you evolved over time? I'm really enjoying the conversational style of this video.

Thanks. I can relate to your comments. Designing and making g are such different disciplines. I suppose if you make one offs the processes merge but for batch production they are far apart. When I was making wooden toys I employed 3 people part time. Now, in the UK at least, the bureaucracy involved is horrendous. I now use. CNC machining to the same effect. It is slow but takes away much of the more tedious legwork. I tend at most to only add a couple of new items to my portfolio each year. I am working on a video on how I approach pricing so watch this space. Best regards, Philip

@@woodenpersonality I really appreciate you taking the time to answer. I will have 26 designs by the end of April, and there's no way I could keep them all in stock, so I plan to make batches of 1-12 at a time (of the more popular designs). I have a CNC and that has been a life saver for me, though I tend to spend almost all of my time sanding now... I'm slowly working my prices up as I get more skill and have higher demand, but I'm finding the local markets kind of force me to lower my prices if I want to sell anything in person - the internet is such a huge marketplace compared to the local markets, so I only end up selling a few pieces here and there (or the really small inexpensive items) locally. Etsy has been much better for the larger automata. Thanks again for the response - I look forward to your video!
