I put this antique object on an eBay auction and I sold it to a buyer in the USA (California) but it’s been STOLEN! I’ll show you the auction and how much it sold for, but I made a massive mistake which allowed a thief to steal the object. I’ve been talking about antiques, how to make money, buy and sell here on KZfaq for 6 months and on the BBC for 20 years, so I should be the last person in the world to get done! However, although I’m embarrassed about it, I’ll share the story of how I was done and how it happened, so you don’t make the same mistake I made…I know I won’t! And if by watching the video, sharing, commenting and liking it, someone might recognise this item we could catch the thief… wouldn’t that be great! If the item is returned or I get the money, then I’ll donate it or the money to a charity of your choice. Cheers, David Harper
If you have anything interesting to sell that would make a great youtube video, please get in touch - www.david-harper.uk/

My suspicion is the buyer has your item. The quick off the mark 'send me proof of purchase' followed by 'didn't receive it' has happened to us too. Maybe worth taking a scroll through their feedback comments, as sellers will sometimes flag this kind of practice with a positive comment (frustratingly the only kind we're allowed to leave.) Hope you solve the mystery.

A fourth option is that it is lost in the mail someplace. It does happen. It could also be held up in customs someplace. While I live in China currently, I have bought books from an English website that is usually pretty good with shipping products. It took me three months to receive my products due to Covid and Customs. Of course I am an optimist and hate to accuse anyone of something until I have proof, so I prefer to think it as lost. Regardless, hard lesson learned. Thankfully it was less than $100. It could have been worse.

So sorry this has happened to you, David. First I do know that COVID has definitely lengthened delivery time (I mailed something to my friend in Canada (I live in Michigan USA) and it took almost a MONTH for her to get it.) But, I really believe that the buyer got the item and because of your mistake and not doing tracking/signature he figured out he could get a refund from you. Lesson learned!!! From your #1 FAN!!!

To be honest, I've shipped things within the US that have taken over 2 weeks. That's pretty crap that the buyer did this to you (and that eBay was so quick to side with them and refund their money). Does the buyer also sell? You should be able to see their account to see whether they are strictly a buyer or whether they sell as well. I'm just glad the bottle didn't sell for even more, so that you weren't out even more money. :(

Being glass....possibility it had lead???? If so, it may possibly have failed x-ray and sent by ship....which can lead to a very long period of time for it to reach the USA and especially during Covid.....3 to 4 months wait time to Australia if sent by ship...which occurred to me on 2 occasions with glass paperweights from the UK. And unfortunately with eBay they believe the buyer and NOT the seller in 100% of the time. Ebay used to to be a wonderful place to buy and sell in years past....NOT NOW...they have become TOO GREEDY and expensive with their own postage and fees....Sorry for you David. ps...lodge an insurance claim with your postal service as you have receipt of postage...not sure if your postal service have insurance on "lost" items posted overseas, but Austalia Post certainly has. Good Luck David.

Fortunately it wasn't a big ticket item so it's natural not to be too concerned with tracking and insurance etc. It's still annoying though when people scam you for nickels and dimes. Stay well. eBay always sides with the seller…I was a high rated seller of small vintage and antique items, with also lots of costume designer jewellery…on one single purchase, the customer complained non receipt, went into dispute, I did due diligence with Post Office, and long story short, after doing all I could do and even giving customer a full refund, eBay basically snuffed me out. No appeals, nothing, and I am being completely honest here. Over night I was shut down…first bad rating after ten years!,,

I would say the buyer is responsible David. I've been selling on ebay since 2004 and have nearly 14000 positive feedbacks. The most recent problem I had was with a vintage telescope, it was perfect but the buyer stole a lens he obviously wanted from it, cross threaded the scope returned it and opened an item not as described case, of course ebay sided with him and refunded his purchase cost plus return postage! The seller has little respect from eBay, we are on our own. Thankfully most people are honest, it doesn't happen often.

Hi David Brave of you to cough this one ! My money is on the buyer being the culprit, especially when they asked for a copy of the postage receipt. To check to make sure there was no tracking on it before instigating the “I never received it “ ploy. Forgive my ignorance as I’ve never done any business on eBay, but I assume you have lodged a complaint with them yourself. Would they not be able to look at the buyer’s profile and check back on his modus operandi ? Pound to a sack of you know what, he or she has pulled this stunt on other unfortunate folk, who may have dropped their guard for a second, as you did, or indeed were too trusting to start with. As an old Police mate of mine used to have this mantra on his tea mug : “ In God I trust and everyone else is a suspect !” Sad indictment on humanity but there are always people out there ready to do you over and make off with your hard earned ! Chin up Matey 👍

I've been selling all over the world using eBay for a while now, selling antiques and collectibles just as you do. I have been using the Global Shipping Program by eBay and all you have to do is pay postage to the eBay depot in the UK, and once it reaches there it's eBay's issue. It costs no more than normal UK shipping for you and eBay charge the buyer abroad as they see appropriate to get it from the UK to wherever it's going.

The real reason I am responding in comments is in hopes that Mr. Harper will respond. I was curious if Mr. Harper thinks that the experts on the various BBC shows would have equally good success in a foreign market, such as in America. If the USA had their own version of Antiques Road Trip, would the British experts be as good with pricing and selling in auctions? Or, it is a regional thing where the experts are good because they know the region's pricing and typical antique products? If the answer is unknown, maybe that is a side angle that BBC shows could look into and bring "experts" from other places in the world to try their hand in the UK.
@DavidHarperAntiquesTV
@DavidHarperAntiquesTV 3 жыл бұрын
Good question Bill. British antiques experts wouldn’t be as good in America, because they dont know the market, which would make it very interesting. The antiques themselves would be no problem, because they are what they are, however on some TV shows now, they’re bringing in experts who aren’t really experts, so that would be even more interesting! 25 years ago, I shipped antiques to and from America, but I’d be well out of touch with the trends now!

Well, having watched a few American shows like Pawn Stars, American Pickers and Storage Wars, I am constantly amazed at the prices paid for stuff that would be worthless in the UK! This is not meant as any kind of insult,by the way, just an observation of how different the markets are. You could not sell a baseball or cards in the UK, for example, probably no more than we could sell a George Best signed shirt in the US. There seems to be much more emphasis on who owned what than there would be in the UK for example. Also the US is a much 'younger' country, so you haven't had time to accumulate junk and stuff like us old European grottlers!

I'm a buyer and I have to look at it from that stand point. Yes, because there was no tracking the buyer could be the culprit, however, I think that it is the postal service that stole it. They know there is no tracking and it could have been carried out by an employee and no one would be the wiser. I've had items that weren't delivered, but you have also to consider how it was shipped. This Media Mail is a joke, even to those that work at the post office won't use it. This is a bit of a no brainer, the buyer has pinched it. It would have arrived the day he sent the first 'where's my item' message, or shortly beforehand. Never send anything without tracking, we only use eBay global shipping for international sales on eBay. Never trust anyone, no matter how nice they seem. Someone in Germany tried to pretend they hadn't received an item from us, it was over £200, he opened a case saying that the tracking said it had been delivered but he didn't have it. Within the hour, eBay closed the case and called him out as a liar, probably because they would have been liable. In all other instances they will side with the buyer.

A few years ago a friend sent me some gemstones from the US. They weren't valuable, as in Koh i Noor or something to get the Dutch excited, just something she thought I would like. When they arrived there were 3 missing. The biggest and flashiest naturally. The box was covered on all joins with that US mail security tape, she had watched the post office person apply it. So how was the magic done? On close inspection, the tape on one end had been slit and carefully replaced, but the wording and lettters were Ever so slightly out of synch. I am in Spain. They are Not going to have access to US Mail security tape, nor is any ordinary bod. Therefore we concluded that the package had been opened by a US Mail employee, then carefully resealed. Not quite carefully enough. There was nothing on the package to say how many there were, and it was only when she asked me how I liked my birthstone that we realised it wasn't there! I blame the US system demanding to know what is in every parcel. She had written 'Gemstones' Some knuckle dragger obviously equated that with value and decided to help him/herself to a few. When we worked out which were missing, she said 'Well, we can take satisfaction in the fact that although they were the biggest, and most 'in your face' they are practically worthless. Imagine his/her face when s/he takes them to a jeweller.' Another friend has an online friendship with a lady in Georgia. She asked if he could get 2 secondhand laptops for her and her friend, as they are beyond their budget in Georgia. They would pay him. He duly complied and decided to hide 2 teddy bears, a big one and a little one, in her parcel, as a little gift. Everything arrived, Except the little teddy bear! Work that one out! They didn't take the laptop, just a tiny teddy bear! Again that Had to be a postal worker.

Hello David Harper ....I am Peter in Mile End...It so happens when I have sent items in the post and for some reasons the postage paid doesn't cover the journey, perhaps through an undervaluation of it' I will risk a standard delivery... Even then if the buyer said they have not received the item you can sometimes get in tough with their local post office and have a word with them so they can put an enquiry through to find who their local mail delivery officer is... That person is usually a regular guy that can be asked if he or she remembers posting a small package.. But I am very sure the buyer did get the item and even perhaps has done this scam many times before... You can always ask e-bay if that customer has complained about any other business people on their website...

Sounds suspiciously like the buyer has done a number on you. Here in Australia we not only have tracking, but we have registered post (signed for) and we have insurance (different levels for various values I think it’s $3 for up to $100 of item value) so you are completely covered. If the item “doesn’t arrive” then the post office takes responsibility and pays for the item. I always make sure buyers pay for this service lol

I can't recall ever being scammed online, but it is a fear with ebay, one reason I don't ship internationally. Maybe you should take a trip to America when covid allows and confront the buyer, I would be furious, although presuming you'd have had to fill out customs invoice any postie in the chain could have seen what it was and potential value and that it wasn't tracked and stolen it. Deffinately alwaystrack in the future.

Sad but your not getting the money or the object back. The chances are too small. I send nothing without tracking. If I need to take photographs of the packed box to show condition Its being sent I do. I believe firmly that if you make it easy to steal by not protecting yourself with no tracking or proof of delivery you will lose items. The only saving grace is that less people steal antiques than other things.

Your fault mate . . Plain and simple ebay has always had the policy . Your need to claim against royal mail ..whatever cover they offer . With the service you paid . Most post is tracked even without paid tracking ..they will know how far it got . If they say it was delivered . You dipute against eBay .with the proof and they give you your money back . Or if not royal mail pay to the amount of your cover you paid for
