New! These paints are available in amazon in an affordable 24 pack: The Maries Masters watercolor can be found at Jerry's Artarama open stock but Amazon now has the 24 set at an awesome price: amzn.to/3T9llcH It's a much better value that shopping on Jerrys or buying open stock on amazon.
These are a delightful surprise (or I happened to pick amazing colors!) Today we are taking a look at Maries Masters Watercolors: amzn.to/3yf6baj I did find them on Amazon is sets of 6 for the same tube price I paid at Jerrys (they are sold by Jerry's Artarama via Amazon so that's probably why) however their individual tubes are much more expensive on amazon. Sadly the price has gone up on Jerry's as well. I paid $2.49 per tube on sale in august and the new super sale price is $3.19 and the regurlar Jerry's price is $4.99 (with a list price of $9.95 per tube but as you know the list price is pretty arbitrarty) They had the sets on Super Sale but they were out of stock with the 24 set costing $45 with a regular Jerry's price of $80. Warning: Every other modern Maries product I have tried has been awful. Avoid the cheap sets as they stink and the watercolor shrinks and cracks in palettes. They are not the same. I think the "Marie's" name is slapped on all kinds of budget art supplies. The watercolors I am reviewing today are the only ones I can recommend. Please don't be fooled by the cheap sets for under $12, they are not the same. Trust me.
The colors I bought: Lemon Yellow (PY3), Crimson (PR149), and Ultramarine Blue (PB29. Al 3 performed and mixed very well. This line of paints has a lot of mixed pigments and I can't speak to those but these single pigment colors were excellent. The mixing was great and not muddy at all. The yellow showed some opacity on my black marker line but it did not seem full of fillers.
Pros:
Price (for now anyway)
Quality
Awesome granulation in the ultramarine blue
Mixes well (the single pigment colors I used did anyway)
55 colors (22 single pigment and 11 perarl/metallic)
Pigment and lightfast info available
Cons
Hard to find (Jerry's Artarama seems to have a monopoly on this product, they might own or license Marie's name as it appears on many of their products that sell under other names on Amazon)
Bottom Line: If you can snag these at the price I paint I totally recommend giving them a try. they are much better than other student grade paints at the same price and the 3 colors I picked seemed pretty dang professional. I can't speak for the whole range but I'll probably pick up a few more colors when I have Jerry's order going. These are not the same as the Phoenix artist's quality paints that I reviewed here: • 58 Cents a Tube?!? Can... (I suspected they might be due to packaging and number similarities on some of the colors.) So the price increase of Maries over Phoenix makes total sense. I wouldn't pay top dollar for the Maries Masters over other artist-grade paints but if you can get them on sale they are worth a try, at least the colors I bought are.

I loved art as a little kid, so my parents signed me up for a local weekly art program. My mom bought me a set of Marie’s watercolor and gouache paints for the class. They were incredibly cheap, cheap enough for me to play around without my mom getting angry at me (Asian parents don’t splurge on art supplies for their kids lol ). Every week my grandmother would walk me to the class and patiently wait for me outside of the classroom. That was more than 20 years ago. I haven’t used anything from Marie’s for years, but every time I see its logo, it reminds me of how much my family loves me.

Just a reminder to everyone that these are Marie's MASTERS watercolor, not Marie's "Artists". Brands can be so confusing with how they name their lines of products. I'm really impressed with the colors you've mixed from those three colors. Especially the greens, ochres, and umbers. I might have to try these 🙂

Marie's Masters might be a little better in strength than cotman has become of late. Thanks Lindsay 💜 But I still love the orange in the W&N burnt sienna. My cotman burnt sienna is a few years old so idk how the new compares. But people have been complaining cotman is getting really weak.💜

I recently bought maries artist grade gouache and they are excellent. A little goes a long way. Its nice to know that the watercolors are also really good.

I own 30 tubes of these Marie's Masters watercolors (which is their prof line). I love these paints, and it surprises me that there are not many reviews of these online. They're super cheap, and they're really good quality. They don't have cadmiums or cobalts, to keep prices down, but the quality of the paint is really good.

I've learned so much about mixing colors by watching you and sometimes, I impress myself! Of course, all credit goes to you on these things. I love the cute little travel set, I think i'm gonna make some for my nieces and nephew for christmas but use the tubes that I bought on sale some time back. Thank you, Lindsay!!!

Really nice! That granulation is wonderful! You amaze me with what you are able to do with only three primaries! I don’t have any crimson reds. I always thought crimson was a warm red. Now I want to try some! I love cool reds!

This video was so much fun! I don't think I have ever heard you get so genuinely impressed and excited about a paint! Lol.... I get it tho! I ordered a set of Marie's student grade paints years ago when I first started. They were my first tube paints (I started on a Clarence box set, like the Christmas gift for kids sets, from hobby lobby) lol 😆 but it was enough to make me want more. Anyways I was so disappointed in the Marie's my chalky kids set was better and more consistent colors. So I would never had guessed the pro paints would be any good. Glad you tried these and made a video! I'm still skeptical but I trust you over anyone else on KZfaq! ❤️

I think companies licence the "maries" name so you have to be careful. My first paints were Marie's and they were great but when I bought more the were awful and smelled like chemicals. These Marie's masters are awesome tho. Hit or miss with that brand.

I got Marie’s watercolour paints for me birthday, in a funky cool pallet, loads of colours 24 lovin painting with them. Very bright and clean colours. Sure was a surprise for me, great review.

Wife: wow. I am glad they were worth the money. I cannot believe how many colors you got in that painting and the mixing. Not because of lack of talent, but because sometimes the primaries do not mix into nice colors together. They are vibrant and beautiful making your already great take on "bat" vibrant and beautiful.

I have the ultramarine and lemon yellow. They are the only student grade paints I've tried. They were great in every way except that they were a bit chalky and didn't move much. They rewet beautifully and are very vibrant as you say. I also love the feel of the tube lol.

Hii. I think I was the one you were pertaining to who reviewed this before. 😂 I got 18 colors back then, and they're good. Now, what's interesting is that, Light Wish through Pauk Rubens sent me a 24 colors set of this, now under Light Wish brand. So this is what I'm reviewinv next, as a set. I also suggested them to send you a set. 😊

I have the Maries Masters 24 set. I like it a lot. I have it in an old pencil tin and it seems to be the one I grab when wanting to do quick practice paintings and studies.

Thanks for this! The section on mixing skin tones was excellent!. Perhaps there is room for a longer video with a focus on that that? I am terrible at it and can use all the help I can get.nit is encouraging you can get so many skin tone options from just 3 tubes. I don't have this set but have many other similar colours that I could try that with. Really liked the baseball painting video too!

We have some Marie's paints, my 11 year old got them as a gift but I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were for a budget brand.

Oh I had forgotten the baseball kid painting was done with these! I really do like this as a triad, you got a great range in that painting. Fun fact: There are variations in PB 29 - for instance, french ultramarine which is redder than average. There's also green shades of ultramarine that mix lovely greens - this one might be a green shade. DaVinci makes 3 shades of ultramarine! Jay Allen Quesada is the creator you were thinking of. He has amazing reviews!

Thank you for the detailed info packed review Lindsay! Man oh man, am I tempted. But I have enough watercolors to last me a lifetime and sadly my chronic hand pain has gotten worst. So no art and painting for me for a while. Siiigh, I will have to live vicariously through you Lindsay. 🤣🤣🤣❤❤❤

I hear ya on having enough paint! I also have hand pain, but I use black pepper essential oil mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with Jojoba oil. I happened upon it during a Google search and even gave some to my elderly neighbor and she loves it too! I hate for anyone to be in pain, so I thought I'd pass on the info. Best of luck to you!

@@starshinesoldier - Yes! Just rub a little on (I put mine in a roller bottle) and give it some time. I usually put mine on at night and let it work it's magic. It might take a couple of applications and you might want to make it stronger or weaker as needed (if it burns make it weaker by adding more carrier oil, but at a 1:1 ratio I, personally, have never had it burn, and the smell is pleasant and fades quickly). I figure it can't hurt to try. 🙂

I’m so disappointed with Jerry’s recent door busters sale. The fine print said that the prices were valid until the date at 11:30 Pacific Daylight time. I went on the site near 11 -m and tried to place my order. The door buster items loaded into my cart but with the “sale” price not the lower door buster price. I tried several times with several items including some of the door busters I was not interested in. I couldn’t get the door buster price so I didn’t place my order. I sent a note to Jerry’s with screen shots proving the times and items and how they loaded into my cart. Never heard back. I think it’s really scammy. I’m sure I’m not the only one. How many customers didn’t notice before placing their order. Sad. I’ve always liked shopping Jerry’s but I did not care for this experience and no explanation or correction from them.

I have had trouble with several sites that were close to deadline exclusions. Sometimes I think it’s more of the website looking at your computers clock and deciding that you are past the deadline and I’m simply won’t load the correct price in the cart. It could be your browser and not a website glitch. But then again maybe it is, I had trouble at cheap Joe’s and Michael’s! So I never ordered either I think perhaps if we want something we better not wait till the last minute. Good luck next time and don’t take it personally Jerry’s doesn’t have it out for you, neither does cheap Joe’s or Michaels they just have techs who work their websites who know nothing about art and probably don’t care. Thanks for this! I'm primarily a mixed media artist but want to dip a toe into more watercolor. I got the small mixing set from Daniel Smith but may pick up a few of these to experiment when I put in my next order. It seems like a good way to experiment and "find my style" (more or less) without committing to the super expensive brands.

Told you they were good ;) Seriously though I feel like these are the most ignored product ever. They are completely different from the "artist" line but I guess they are just expected to the be the same. I know of one other review and they have been out for a long time. The only complaint is some of the unnecessarily multi pigment colors, otherwise I would suggest them to anyone looking to get decent paint on a budget. Oh.. and they go on sale at Jerry's constantly so don't pay the "regular" price unless you really want a color that has been out of stock or something.

Good to know! I paid $2.50 a tube at jerry's. That's the best price I've seen. I was turned off by other Maries paints so I was skeptical but I had requests to review them and im glad because i wouldn't have tried them otherwise.

Hullo Lindsay, I am also curious about what paints you choose to expand your selection of a new to you brand? I went through quite a few brands when I came back to traditional art work and purchased 3 primaries and creating color wheels and mixing colors. It can be tricky to choose from online sources but most companies have a sample set of dots if your not sure of the colors or you are not familiar with how certain pigments are. I have been mistaken about a color based on pigment information. I try to expand my palette with warm and cool primaries and I choose a Sap or Hookers green just to see how convenient it is! I hope you show your viewers how to expand your primary choices.

The tubes remind me of Winsor Newton labels. They are 9ml? Yes the tubes on Amazon are sold by Jerry’s Artarama.

PR 149 is a lovely pigment called Perelyne Scarlet, which is kind of a misnomer since it's quite a nice middle red, although yours is more scarlet than DS's version. I have a thing against PY 3 (I'm not sure why it's still so popular when it's always opaque and has serious lightfastness issues - and there are so many better choices) but of course who doesn't love ultramarine 🙂

Py3 used to have good lightfastness. I don't know why it has degraded in batches made in recent decades. Hard habit to break. I love it.

@@thefrugalcrafter I don't know if it was better in the old days, but I know Bruce from Handprint has always recommended you choose other pigments. And I've seen it fade in many people's lightfast tests 😞

@@thefrugalcrafter PS, such a great tip about using golden brush fibers for mixing 3 pigment mixes!!! Thank you for that - definitely trying it. Sometimes I keep separate brushes for each color, but it's hard to keep track.

Hi Lindsay. Just wanted to ask if you have a video that explains and compares Tim Holtz's mediums with other brands? I know next to nothing about "art" and the products, and love the look of Tim's work, but wondered if there were more cost conscious options from other brands. Not only would I like to "share the wealth", by trying other brand's products to dabble with, I'd like to know if there are products that do the same thing. I don't even know if TH products are the only thing out there that do the same thing. I know that I need to learn MUCH more about what products are out there, how they work best, and would love to hear an explanation that I trust -- without any brand-bias. THANKS!!

I haven't used any of his branded mediums. I go for liquatex usually. I don't think of ranger as being the highest quality (and they are often overpriced) so I recommend liquatex. The store brand from jerrys artarama is good too.

I'd probably get a quin rose and maybe a burnt seinna. I'd have to look at pigments because they had a few weird mixes. The price in sets would have to come down I think before I'd buy one.
