In this video, I'm staying onboard the legendary Queen Mary for a few nights. The Queen Mary is a floating Ocean Liner / Ship hotel permanently docked in Long Beach (California), close to the city of Los Angeles. This ship was initially launched as an Ocean Liner for Cunard White Star Line, but later retired after a lengthy period of service, at which point she was acquired by the city of Long Beach for tourism purposes.
In this video, I'm going to take you on a tour of my 'Deluxe Stateroom', and then take you on a tour of the ship. Not all areas of the ship were available to tour, due to the fact that the Queen Mary is an ongoing restoration project. Additionally, the ship operates as a tourist attraction where tickets are required to tour the ship, and so not all areas were accessible on my chosen tours.
Historically, the Queen Mary was built in Clydebank (Glasgow, Scotland - yes, close to where I grew up!) back in 1930, and her maiden voyage took place a few years later in 1936. In 1967, she retired as an Ocean Liner, and arrived in her new home of Southern California in December of that year, where she now operates as a floating hotel, attraction, and weddings & events venue.

It's the soul of the ship that pulls like minded folks (no matter where she may be berthed) to her. I never got to sail on her or other major namesakes from the days of serious cruising, but I did take a cruise ship from Beirut to Cyprus when I was in first grade. I've been hooked ever since. Liked your tour, but----and this is critical from an 80 year old perspective----where was the toilet? Ha! I saw the tub, shower, and sink-----but not the "necessary". Keep on touring, son.

I'm so pleased that she is being restored and wasn't sent to the scrapyards like so many other old ships. Watching this, I could imagine people of the 1930s walking around and the soldiers during the war. So much history. Thanks Fraser.

Great video as always. I had a day visit to the Queen Mary back in 2012. It was quiet and not many people around. The hotel was closed at that time. But a lovely chap in the radio room told us some fantastic stories. Completely agree about some of the corridors. One did send a shiver down my spine. No explanation but was a bit spooky! Can't wait to visit her at some point again!

Fantastic to watch this! We did the tour last September as we were picking up an Oceania cruise out of Long Beach. It was magical to see this ship ... but agree with you that the long cabin corridoors really did feel creepy and unnerving - we felt the same way in the dimly lit engine rooms as well. Thanks for the vlog! :)

The QM's successor, the QM2 built in the early 2000s, shows how ocean liners in today's era are larger & fancier than ships of the past were. That definitely includes the QE2 built in the late 1960s, around the time the QM was retired. The ship in Dubai reflects the age of the Vietnam War, Woodstock & polyester, so to me it isn't as ideal as a stationary hotel as the QM2 will be (when it's retired) or a historic site as the QM (1934) is. But as your previous cabin in the QM was, a ship that's 90 yrs old certainly needs way more renovation work than a ship over 50 yrs old does.

An absolutely beautiful ship, with a style and quality that could rival anything today. Thank you so much for posting, a wonderful video. And to think it was built in my hometown by men who would have gone home to tenements with no inside toilet and no electricity. I know because my mum said they used gas for lights in the 1930s with chains hanging from the ceiling. Even in the 1960s a lot of the tenement flats in Glasgow still had no inside toilets. I remember we had one on the landing we shared with several neighbours. I just find it interesting the contrast between the beauty and craft of what the Clyde workers created and how they (we) lived.
