03:02 Yeah they get “leaked more often than you’d think. I used to work for an effects company that did work in film, TV, Theatre, Adverts etc. We did everything from animatronics, practical effects to sculpting and make up effects. Including doing life casting when required. We had a lot of moulds from casting both actors and props in storage. On some days when work was slow, as apprentices we would grab some of the moulds to use to practice and learn about casting techniques. Like I said the shop had a lot of moulds in storage including things like the original mould for Darth Vader’s helmet from ROTJ. So to “practice” fibreglass moulding on one very slow day I made a few castings of Vader’s face plate and helmet! I made 4 fibreglass castings that week as practice. They weren’t perfect and all required some work to look good (the silicone mould was over 33 years old at the time). I kept one which I still have and spent a long time filling, sanding, cleaning up and painting. The others I sold on eBay! I imagine the guy who sold you RDJ’s face cast probably did the same thing. Had access to the mould and just made a load of plaster casts to sell! 😂

To be honest, I think your head looks better than the Hot Toys and other companies' heads! Excellent work while on your break!

I don't get why companies don't use scanners for their work. Hot Toys literally had celebrities over to their store for autographs and pictures. What a wasted opportunity!

@@zedabyu Actually most companies that produced smaller than 1/6 usually directly use the scan data Marvel provide so they tend to look very similar despite from different companies because it require less detail. And getting portrait license from actors/actresses is extremely hard, you can't just go and scan them on set even if they agree with. However, Marvel usually provide scan data of the character, but they're extremely crappy that we tend to just resculpt their entire face in the end which is much easier than clean up the messy scan and I believe Hot Toys is very aware of it so they just end up sculpting from scratch. Perfect scan like what you have in the video doesn't exist in the industry, because actors/actresses time are valuable you can only work on what you have which usually less an hour which not only include the shape of the entire body with costumes but also all the textures in different lighting scenarios. The initial setup and the final calculation are also include in that one hour so eventually we have to scan one character under 15 minutes with all the requirements they need and that's why the result usually really really bad, how bad? They're like something scanned from an App on your phone. But it's never the shape they care about when scanning, it's the highres textures came with it because artists can perfectly recreate the characters' likeness but it's hard to replicate their skin texture and shader so the matter is when doing a scanning is how many things you can do with the 15 minutes you have. Sorry for writing so many because what you wonder here just happened to be my working area so probably can give you an insight about things related to scan data and why companies like Hot Toys tend to sculpt from scratch then using the scan data Marvel provide.

Nice attempt at using more blues in your paint application. The flesh tone spray was way too opaque which covered over the blue. Seal between layers and thin glaze over with thinner coats to allow bit of the previous colors to show through. Should give more depth and complexity. As you demonstrated human faces aren’t perfectly symmetrical like an android, individuals have many slight imperfections like you showed with Downey’s nose shifting to one side. So looking for these details is what makes a great sculpt.

Great vid! Maybe a suggestion when you paint the blues and reds, use a translucent base mixed with the beige so the colors underneath show up a bit more. Looks fantastic though. Do you think the revopoint mini would scan let's say 1/6 head sculpts better than the new scanner that's using a different laser ?
@zedabyu
@zedabyu Жыл бұрын
The MINI definitely has the best resolution right now to scan a 1/6 headsculpt. RANGE is meant for bigger things. POP 2 is like an in between, which I prefer for most of my projects.

A little note about a life cast is that life cast tend to pull the facial muscle inward and downward, so it's better to add the volume back when using it as a base, especially the nose and the mouth area.
