Etfs and mutual funds are the safest way to go. BUT well established companies as individual long term holds are also priceless. JNJ APPL MSFT BP XOM etc...

I'm slowly moving everything toward ETF's/CEF's. WPC was enough proof that even if you do your research, the rug can be pulled out at anytime out of the blue.

I do a little of both, I have a regular dividend portfolio investing in individual companies, and in my Roth IRA I do mostly index funds and REITs and both are doing well!

Hi Bob! Your calculations still show being better investing $5 a day on QQQ instead of $105 a month, in this market?

Total noob question here but is there a difference between SPY, VOO, or VTI? Is investing in one better than the other? Does it matter which one to pick?
@BobSharpe
@BobSharpe 5 ай бұрын
Not a huge difference between SPY & VOO. Both track the S&P 500 index, so they are ultimately the same thing. The only difference of these two are SPY is 0.09% expense ratio and VOO is 0.03% expense ratio. Very very cheap either way, but VOO is technically less expensive (LMK if you have questions on what the expense ratio means). As far as VTI, that one is different as it tracks the entire U.S. Stock Market (VTI = Vanguard Total Index). This gives you exposure to over 3,000 different stocks vs SPY & VOO which only focus on the 500 companies listed in the S&P 500.

Stocks are how I'm up huge the past year. But ETFs and mutual funds are where I told my Mom to put her money because her risk tolerance is very different from mine. She won't get the return I am but she'll do way better then what the bank was giving her.

I hate to be so blunt, but ETFs are better for people too lazy to do the work and/or too busy to do the work. If you are willing and able to do the work, individual stock picking, should outperform.

If you own 10 stocks … unless you go 10 for 10 even two tragic stocks can destroy your portfolio. And cancel out your other gains. ETFs is Greeeennnnn + across the board .
