Cult of the Lamb is ultimately two games, but the genius of the title is that the connective tissue between them is so strong yet so precisely calibrated and so subtle that you barely notice how much you are being shepherded, pun intended, back and forth between the two game modes.

@@markwheeler4245 Why not just play what you feel like playing. I have like 20 or more games that I still haven't beat but I don't care ether cause I got bored of it/it sucks/prefer to play something else. I feel like I'd start to hate a game if I forces my self to play it until I finish it. I remember I took a 2 year break from Sekiro because I couldn't get into the new combat system. When I came back, it clicked and I ended up platnuming the game. Now imagine I had to fight demon of hatred and sword saint ishin who is one of the hardest bosses fromsoft has created thus far, when I'm struggling to keep and burnt out from the constant stuggle. Just play what you want bro. If I game is really good then you will come back to it when you want to replay it or give it another try. If you love it then playthough until you platnum it but no need to do whatever it is your doing.

For the inevitable expansion to add synergy that was lacking in the games combat as you said I thought of being able to fuse two weapons or a weapon and a curse together for both slots. Have them change completely how they interact and function as well as add tarots that diversify the builds more. Give us charms or runes of some sort that function similarly to curses that add passive effects to weapons like for instance “more gold when killing with dagger or send out a knock back wave of water with the mallet”

I'm very happy about these second generation roguelites, because they have an ending, a story. That was my biggest pet peeve with the original ones. Like you said, they are meant to be played and that's it. But Hades, and Cult of the Lamb has more than that, it's not just play to play. It feels like the roguelites games have soul now, which I personally felt the first generation roguelites, like Slay the Spire never did. Instead, they are just "Go to the end, don't die"; while the newer ones feel like they have a purpose or a lesson.

Glad everyone is having a blast with this. Will be giving it a miss though, as I just do not get on with procedurally generated games. Oh lordy, have I tried.

I will say that this game is a good deal easier than most popular roguelites... Plus there is a difficulty slider. Seems like they really wanted ppl put off by the genre to be able to enjoy this one

Its like a 'Don't Starve' meets 'Binding of Isaac' vibe for me. Very fun so far. Wish it was a tad deeper. Its missing something, idk what that something is per se...but im having a blast so far

Echoing what others said, the review intro alone sold me. The devs will now have you to thank for this brilliant marketing!

Y'know on one side I would love to see some replayability and more expansion of the management area and stuff to use maybe some electrical stuff such as getting followers to run in wheels to make power for lots of stuff. Buuuuuuut at the same time this game seems like a carefully balanced show. So I think as is it's really good and I work love to see some expansions later on

Its a really good gane, however, there are some bugs that might hinder your experience. I encountered one where i cant keep progressing on the cults skill tree so waiting on a fix might be good

I know I've had several bugs as well, had to break and rebuild my farm and seed silo because nobody would work them, lost all my seeds and spent the next 2 hours scrounging for enough food to prevent dissenters, then died staring at a loading screen that obscured the boss that loaded in behind it

So this game is indeed amazing in its concept, but I think it is ultimately too simplistic. Combat is very simple, and it would have benefitted from the ability to choose a base weapon at the start of a run, and then getting various upgrades to that base type as you go, with successive runs upgrading the base weapon. Something like Hades. It's not as fun to just be locked into a weapon for a run, and it feels too random. The ability progression is very simple. You don't really get builds as you progress in a run, again, unlike Hades. I'm not seeing things like reflect projectiles, slow time, and things like that. It's also pretty easy to just hit dodge and roll your way through a run. In the village, it doesn't seem to make a difference what you do. Yes, it's got its charm in there, and like the opening to this review, pretty funny the things that happen, but then you realize it sort of doesn't matter. Can lose some or most of your followers and it has little effect on anything. You don't seem to be able to lose your village either, to some great calamity or lack of planning, so the game seems to be a one and done deal, which is too bad. Unique premise, not very well developed, and a bit simplistic on the gameplay loop, but such a cool idea. I'd not have reviewed it too terribly high imho, but just my take on it. I guess I don't regret getting it, but it definitely is not all that it seems to be made out to be by so many reviewers. Just my opinion.

yea I am one of the dissenting negative opinions that this game is just kind of boring, the combat is really repetive and mediocre, and the base building tedious, i refunded after an hour

@@lswallie I should have, but I played into it longer than that. Literally every review and pretty much every comment on Reddit loves the game, and I am sitting here looking at what I see as faults wondering why they weren't called out. Not a knock on Skill Up specifically, or anyone. This is one place I usually go to get an idea of a game. I read between the lines and decide for myself, but I failed here. Literally no one called out the over-simplistic nature and lack of depth this game has. Again, my opinion though.

There are some pretty annoying bugs but otherwise it's really solid. I do wish there were a bit more depth to the dungeon sections, but it doesn't detract from the overall experience too much. I think it would have been worth at least talking a little bit about the bugs present, though. I haven't experienced this one myself, but a lot of people are having an issue that softlocks their progress because they're unable to get the level 3 cult upgrade, and that aside I've had a whole lot of weird bugs. There's another common one where follower quests will often target a non-existent (dead) follower instead of properly targeting the one who gives it to you, so that the quest fails instantly. I've gone through periods of time where about 60% of quests have insta-failed because of it, though it comes and goes. I've also had my cooking fire just straight up disappear from my camp, and when I tried to build another, it said I couldn't because I already had one. Then just earlier tonight, I got back from a successful dungeon run to find that all but 2 of my followers had disappeared from camp, despite the menu still showing all of them. In both of those last two cases, simply saving, returning to the main menu, then reloading the save fixed them, so no harm done, but those are some pretty serious bugs. I'm sure the developers are working on patching things, so I don't know how much longer stuff like that will be happening, but I was a little surprised Skill Up didn't mention bugs at all.

13:10 I think that's the game's most important virtue, that it walks you through the principles of a cult without giving you a lecture. If this game didn't have cutesy graphics, it could be a great Lovecraftian game with a strong social commentary on how the so-called secular world runs on the same principles as a cult with human sacrifices.
