Good for you my brother Paul. Glad to see a fellow guitarist go for the guitar he needs because it's what actually suits him/her, their specific style, and tone that pairs with the player and not just getting a guitar because it's the status quo, or its so gorgeous to look at etc. I am a PRS guy, but I also love Strats, Charvels, Jacksons, some Ibanez. Always go for the guitar that best does the job for you. Variety is crucial though as well. Cheers to my brother from another mother

Hi Luis! Just catching up with comments on the 335 😀. Yes, I definitely think you’re right. If I win the lottery, then the first thing I’d do is buy that PRS back again, ha ha. But since I’m in the real world, it makes sense to have the 335, since that’s much more my style. Cheers Luis, hope all is well on your side of our planet. 😀

I am with you on the swap . I bought a PRS about 15 years ago , so beautiful and well made , sold it in a month because I was not in love with it ! If I can not be enamored with a guitar , think about it , worry about it , and constantly want to pick it up and play , then it is not right for me . As I mentioned I traded my PRS custom 22 for the same nocatser 51 you have and never for one second looked back. You made the right the right choice in my opinion...your 335 sounds like dynamite and one can feel the legacy pf Larry Carlton, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and the great Freddie King. The hard part as you say is not to fall in love with a new guitar or fake old one. I have bought probably fifty guitars in the past even a Music Man which had little sustain four PRS (none of which I kept) and I have sworn to myself to keep to my current collection which is down to four. As we know its all in the fingers. I do feel however that when it comes to acoustic guitars it is hard to make a cheap one really ring...when I was 15 I heard CSNY and had an epiphany and when I was in my 50s I could afford my first Martin and not a day goes by without me deeply appreciating the bell-like beautiful tone and when I play out it always hits the spot. I feel PRS are making too many weird kitch coloured instruments and have fallen into that American trap of excessive marketing and the new bird inlays strike me as cheap and nasty.

Great choice Paul. Always difficult on YT with the natural compression however like you l'm a massive Gary Moore fan and remember seeing him at the Barrowlands when he wheeled out his 335 for a couple of numbers and it blew his LP's away. I knew then l had to get one. There's that " air movement " so difficult to describe but immediately apparent when you play one that separates them from solid body guitars . Love them. Enjoy yours !

I had a PRS McCarty 594 shipped to me. First thing is they are beautiful guitars and very well made.. No flaws at all. I was surprised how thick the neck was on the PRS. The PRS lacked the character I was looking for which is what my Les Paul has. Though the PRS is a great guitar I sent it back as I didn't bond with it. The Gibson 335 was next. It took about 10 minutes to bond with it. I was not used to a larger body guitar. Once I got used to the neck and body I stopped playing all my other guitars. It has that Gibson warm tone while still having a bright open sound

Congratulations on your new arrival!! I never thought the PRS stood up to the 59 Custom LP, Those first few notes through the Katana were like a morning chorus on Valentine's Day. I'm still on the fence regarding the Marshall especially with the volume cranked, I don't mind a little crunch in the right setting but when it crushes note definition, for my ears anyway it takes away some of the finess. An excellent example is Mark Knopfler and "Wild Theme" usually played on a Schecter strat with lots of sparkle and jangle. However in Montserrat he uses the Gibson 59 LP, just on the edge of breaking up, many commenters took a dislike to unclean sound, preferring the original. I and others heard a new quality, a depth of tone and a voice like that of someone crying whilst singing, a tune which always had lots of feeling now had heart and sole to match. I don't know if you watched it yet but "Blues Jives at the Crossroads" is up although I rushed it and did it in one take and the settings on the effects pedal, combined with those on the Katana and palm muting gave too much of a muted effect. I tried it, same settings on another guitar and the difference was chalk and cheese. A re-do is called for, funny how different pickups sound so different on the same setting!!
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Michael. I was intrigued with your comments on Knopfler’s choice of guitar for Wild Theme / Montserrat..... so I’ve just given that a listen. @michaellilley6725
@michaellilley6725 5 жыл бұрын
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I thought you might enjoy Mark Knopfler's "Wild Theme" in Montserrat, I did too but then the pickups were just breaking up and no more, I enjoy the crunch channel on the Katana for the same reason but find the Brown channel with a decent bit of gain just too crunchy. I'm sure you'll make many videos with the 335 it just suits your style so well, I miss my Ibanez AS 93 semi hollow with its beautiful Babinga wood but the bridge pickup lacked meat so I swapped it for the Epiphone with the Gibson pups. It's all about tone at the end of the day, which ironically in my latest post I smothered out of the Fender Stratocaster by overdooing the string muting yet with only light pressure it can sound so good. The central heating is playing up again, guitars don't like big changes in temperature, cold seems to cause upbow making the action higher and less playable. Feel free to critique, I think I will re-do" Wild Theme" and Blues Jives at the Crossroads with different guitars, I also need to compare the Katana and the Orange. Happy playing...Michael...

It’s from Gibson Memphis, made 2005 and so I’m not sure what Gibson were calling these pickups at that time... Regardless, it’s interesting that your Bill Lawrence pickups transformed your experience... my subscribers might find this interesting too. Cheers for watching Mario 🙏

While I don’t own a 335, I do have a Heritage H-555 30th Anny edition. Very figured curly maple top. Has a set of Seth Lovers in it that sound phenomenal, a real tone machine. It’s a really dressed up version of a 335. I have a Yamaha A 2200 also, fantastic semi hollow. With all that said, I have two 3 PRSs. Two of which will go to my kids. One is a whale blue Wood Library DGT with a Korina neck, Rosewood fretboard. The other is a Custom 24 in Autumn Sky, that was taken to the 2012 PRS Experience. It has a Private stock flame maple neck with Brazilian Rosewood fretboard. Simply stunning. They are both unbelievably well made, great looking and sounding guitars. I know it’s easy, even fashionable to bash PRS but if you get the right ones, they are wonderful. Your 335 sounds killer!

I completely understand the decision to surrender the PRS for the 335. I made the same kind of decision when I traded my PRS McCarty against a 57 Custom Shop Les Paul Junior. No regrets (Paul, you helped inspire that move with your own Junior demo). Maybe Richard Thompson best expressed the general sentiment in Red Molly: “Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do, Ahh, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52". Cheers. Tom

Never really liked the feel of the PRS s I have played in the show rooms . I know they are good guitars , but definitly like the tone and feel out of the Gibsons and Fenders even with Gibsons QC issues way more at a much lower price point . I have recently bought a 2017 sg , 2019 60s Les Paul , and a 2019 American elite Tele after selling off my 72 strat . In my opinion these years were very good years for build quality for these brands . I also have a 2006 american standard strat which also was flawless out of the box . The 72 strat was a terribly made guutar in my opinion . I had a lot of work done on it ,but it was just never right . I just held on to it until i found a buyer willing to pay the accessed vintage price .

Nice acquisition, and sound. Its a coincidence, Im in the same boat: Have a PRS c24. Love the feel, playability, comfort. Also a real pleasure just to look at. However, not exactly jiving with some of the tones. The more I pick it up, the more I'm convinced I gravitate towards Gibson/Fender. I'm also intending to replace it with another Gibson. A couple times I thought maybe a Mccarty is more my jam, but it doesnt quite hit the spot, doesnt have the same vibe.

Hi Johnny. Actually, it’s a cracking guitar and I love it dearly. However, over the last year and I half I developed an obsession with the idea of owning a Jazzmaster…. And since I really couldn’t afford any more guitars, one had to go to make room 😩. And since I’m lucky enough to have more than one Gibson, one of them had to go. It was agonizing choosing…. Since I simply could NEVER part with my R9, or Gold Top or Black beauty or Junior… it had to be this 335. A very hard decision. Thankfully I’m completely in love with my Jazzmaster 🙏

Hi Jeremiah, thanks for watching. Yes, the first few phrases were through my Boss Katana 100 combo, on the Crunch Channel (probably the best amp I’ve ever owned). Then the final section was through a rather expensive hand wired Marshall, called the Astoria - probably the 2nd best amp i’ve ever owned. It’s a 30W valve amp. Delighted to hear you also have a 335...... I’d never played one before, but now I’m hooked. No pedals used in this clip, except the Marshall has a wee Reverb & Delay pedal hooked up, since it doesn’t come with anything.

@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Aidan, sorry for late reply. I’m generally a bridge pickup guy. So on that guitar, I’ll usually have the volume pot up full but the tone pot rolled off 50%. If I’m on the neck, I might have the volume rolled down to 80% but the tone up full. And on the middle position I tend to go for that classic blending trick, where I’ll have everything up full except the next volume…. I roll that back a little, 80%. Awesome

Ah, that sounds like a lovely dilemma. And of course the answer is “take out a loan for another £2k and buy both” 🤣. Actually I’m not joking. They’re both lovely, and for me, essential. A committee would probably vote in favour of a 335 because they’re SO versatile. And yet I play my Gold Top more often ‘cause it looks, sounds, and feels so dam cool. Well, I felt a bit overwhelmed at first too. But as soon as I did the following I was a very happy man: a) Clean channel b) Gain full up c) EQ slightly mid-scooped d) Tasteful amount of Reverb & Delay Play your guitar. The result is a very warm fat impression of a valve amp. Then if you want to go heavier (towards Gary Moore levels of Drive), I either twist the booster mod knob or just switch to Crunch. I tend not to enjoy the Brown or Lead channels....

@paulstaffordcook8799 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher. I’m afraid my advice on a PRS is useless. I’m a traditionalist... When I look at Gibsons and Fenders I’m inspired. I’m transported back to my teenage years. PRS are beautiful items but I just don’t feel any desire to pick them up and play. No doubt this is a failing on my part. If you CAN be objective, then I bet a PRS Semi Hollow will be amazing, and will be an awesome purchase. Just not for me. As regards the string gauge and sound? Yes, I have some experience here. I do think bigger strings (more mass) give a meatier tone. I like a meaty tone from most types of guitars, so I use 11s on all my guitars EXCEPT my Strat... On my Strat I like a thinner, more delicate sound, so I use 10s. Hope this helps.

@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gos wo 👍. I found out that Joe Bonamassa does this to his Gibsons.... so I researched it on KZfaq. To “top wrap” properly one must screw the stop tailpiece right down to the wood, in order to create the steepest possible string break angle. Even then, it will still be a reduced angle to what you’d get by normal factory stringing. The supposed advantages are a slightly slinkier feel to the strings, reduced chance of string breaks, and greater sustain and resonance. The first one is a definite. The second one? Probably. The third one? No idea, but it kinda makes sense to me to have the tailpiece in full contact with the body. It also looks cool. So I do it to all 3 of my Gibsons 😀

Hi Denti dens. Actually, I’m not entirely sure, since I didn’t buy it brand new. I know only 3 facts about it.... (1) serial number and tags both date it to the year 2005, (2) it’s from Gibson Memphis, (3) it has their VOS finish. So I’m guessing it must be a Gibson Custom shop 60’s era. I think the trick with the 335 is to set up a tone that is nearly clean, but with a little grit from a pedal or the amp. Bluesy break up kinda territory. If you’re really not satisfied then you could consider a pickup swap to one of the many PAF imitations (Monty’s, OX4, Bare Knuckle, Lollar).. Hope that helps 👍
