The fact that the RAV4 Prime PHEV makes significantly more power than this full EV is pretty telling. It’ll be pretty hard to judge the specifications until we know the price, of course. @smallmj28862 жыл бұрын
I'm a Toyota loyalist, and performance guys just don't understand why we are so loyal. It is all about the long term reliability. We want cars that we can trust to go many 100,000's of km hassle free. I drove a Camry until last November when I hit a deer. It had 312,000 km on it and I did two repairs on it beyond regular maintenance (tires, brakes, oil changes). If I hadn't had my encounter with Bambi I probably would have gotten at least another 150,000 km on it. So to be successful, Toyota doesn't need to be the fastest, the best handling, have amazing specs. It needs to be practical, decently priced, and give us hope that it will last for a really long time. We Toyota loyalists see reports of Tesla's with no heat in the Canadian winter, of Bolt's that catch fire, of Tesla's where the flash memory dies from old age, and other EV problems and it makes us want an option from the manufacturer we trust. If the bZ4X sells well it will because of this reputation of reliability. Toyota doesn't need to win on the specs, they just need to make something that feels like a Toyota. When I needed a new car right away in November, I really wanted an EV. But the only ones immediately available in my province were the Ioniq (back seat too small, range too short), the Kona (joke of a back seat), and the Bolt (yikes). So I ended up with a Prius Prime. It was the right choice at the time, and when we eventually replace it many years from now we will likely start by looking at what Toyota has to offer.

They probably decided to go front wheel drive, because the vast majority of Toyotas are front wheel drive so maybe they didn't want to change the driving characteristics too much for their existing customers so they would feel familiar to them. But this thing needs to cost less than the ID4 base model, One thing it will have going for it is that it's not a VW. They're not exactly known for top reliability numbers. I'm sure that ID4 Will be more reliable than there gas powered vehicles. But there's still a lot of secondary systems like window regulators, HVAC systems etc. And things generally cost a lot more to repair on European cars. I don't think we're going to know for sure until we get to actually drive one of these. And get some real specs and driving impressions

What benefits does Toyota see from using lower power motors and a lower capacity battery? Less weight, less expensive resources, and less cost. Lower power motors likely means they're either not using PM motors or they're using fewer magnets. In case you haven't noticed, Neodymium (magnet) prices are absolutely SOARING! A ton of Neodymium is now going for $221,788, up about $20k in a week. Lower power motors means less overall material like magnets, copper in the windings, smaller rotor, less aluminum casing material and lighter weight gears. Overall it's likely just a smaller, cheaper, and lighter package, cutting overall vehicle weight; critical for BEVs. The smaller battery means less lithium, copper, aluminum, nickel, cobalt, graphite, etc. All VERY expensive metals who have seen their prices soar this past year. It also means either a lighter battery or a less expensive chemistry. Maybe higher in Manganese instead of Nickel. For a BEV, this vehicle's powertrain should be lighter than some of the longer range competitors; so power to weight ratio should still be pretty solid. The RWD Id.4 is the same horsepower, but the vehicle weighs nearly 300 lbs more. The BZ4X wiki page says this CUV's curb weight will come in at around 4230 - 4450 lbs. That's impressive. Most electric CUVs are pushing 5000 lbs or more. A model Y with AWD is 4550 lbs, but keep in mind that they accomplished that by using a LOT of aluminum in the chassis, suspension, and body panels. I can't imagine Toyota will use much of any aluminum in this vehicle to cut weight. Aluminum prices are extremely high and still increasing. We've been sitting on the edge of an impending supply shortage for the past 3 years.... Hypothetically, if all luxury brands decide to start replacing huge amounts of the steel they're using in their cars with aluminum (See the iX and EQS, with more on the way). Say even the mid-tier near luxury vehicle electric variants like the 3/4 series, Mercedes A, C, and E classes, Cadillac sedans, and small CUVs start using just a bit more aluminum in each and every car. Where does that leave the price and supply of Aluminum. Where does that leave Tesla whose using an enormous amount of aluminum in each of their cars. I guess we'll see. ;)

This will need to have some ace-in-the-hole for it to have any advantage. If they improve the charging speeds and bring the price below the competition they might have a decent vehicle here. Sort of vague with their "under an hour" charging estimate, that's like saying a fillup at a gas station takes "under an hour," we already know that. Maybe hesitant to give a specific time since they might still be tweaking the charge curve?

So VW got the small display right as well as putting the motor to the correct wheels.

Toyota's don't sell based on pizazz, power, or any of that. They sell for their reputation for longevity. In that vain, the Piano Black has got to go. Toyota should just focus on comfortable people mover EV's for now, as that's what they're good and what the world needs. Something that is aimed to compete with Audi eTron, BMW iX, Tesla Model Y, etc. should come from Lexus anyways. We hopefully will see a premium version of this with a more exciting powertrain from Lexus.

Nope. Short hood for better approach angle and better packaging.

It better be quicker that the Rav4 Prime, at least 4.8 sec 0-60. Was waiting for this review as I’m going to buy a EV this year and so far the Ioniq 5 is winning.

I like the design but the specs are very underwhelming. I am making making some EV commitment this year... but unless this is 30k or less with incentives this is a no go for me.

Yo dude, lighten up. I knew that you were coocoo after you commented on the look of the charging port! That is why its covered.... also the design of the display is setup so you can keep heads up and look over the wheel.

Agreed that price will be the key in this. And there’s certainly some things they should update. Such as removing the pillar running in the middle of the glass roof and the glossy black all over. Also probably a car that most might want to have at home charging for if it takes an hour to charge fast (and that’s under normal conditions? Might be longer in colder climates I’m guessing) but if it’s at a good affordable price point for Toyota loyalists. It might actually do well. Always excited for new EVs either way!

Wonder if they were trying hard to make awd and fwd be same range?

everything looks like such an after thought. The interior is shockingly cheap looking. nissan’s early bets on EV are paying off.. the ariya is more impressive in every way

Nothing official but I've heard the price to be around $37000-$42000.

That "Eww" at 3:17 pretty much sums it up. As expected, it's simply not competitive. An Ioniq 5 does pretty much everything better and it was released worldwide LAST year. A Tesla? This thing doesn't even match specs with a model 3 from 4 years ago. Toyota. Doesn't. Care. They've done the absolute minimum amount of work to put this together and boy does it show.

I don’t like Toyota……period… now I am happy electric is along with hybrid or whatever not my thing. Good for those who prefer that anyway.. that design is eww… but let’s see with open mind about range, power, motor, material quality etc. 🤞🏼

I enjoy these reviews, but I would love if Kyle or others recognized the role that brand reliability history plays in customers decision-making. Even though predicting the reliability of an EV based on reliability of ICE vehicles is not clear at all, there's a lot that goes into making a reliable vehicle with longetivity that goes beyond powertrain-related componentry. In my experience, loyal Toyota customers(not me) in particular tend to take pride in the ability to drive their cars longer and farther with minimal concerns about annoying vehicle quirks and failures and visits to the service dept. I honestly would love to hear more thoughts from kyle and crew on these dimensions of car production because they are pretty important to many mainstream consumers but there's not much commentary here in most reviewers channels. I would love to see more balanc between performance, functionality, and reliability considerations in reviews.

So far, not impressed with the range and especially the power. Performance options from VW and Hyundai/Kia are better. My guess is Toyota wants to see how it sells before offering a performance version. Not sure why they would have any doubt it will sell.

Are there any 6+ seaters EVs for under $45k coming this year?
@dishwashersafe2222 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing the lack of added power for the AWD version is limited more by maximum battery discharge rate than the motors themselves.
