I-Team: State fires two child welfare workers over Gwinnett rolling pin beating case

BETHLEHEM, Ga. - Two months before 8-year-old Sayra Barros’ stepmother allegedly beat her to death with a wooden rolling pin, Georgia’s child welfare agency received a complaint that her father called her "a demon," records obtained by the FOX 5 I-Team reveal.
But the state Division of Family and Children Services closed that case, which included allegations of the stepmother bruising the child. Now DFCS says that complaint was mishandled, firing both the social worker who reported no evidence of abuse and her supervisor who signed off.

The reason this happened is they are short on people. The pay is terrible, the caseloads are overwhelming, and everyone hates you. No one wants these jobs. If you could also be charged for what people do to their kids there wouldn't be a single soul who would take the job.

I agree with everyone's points. Really good points. I also think in certain cases judges and DAs/prosecutor should be criminally charges as well(with all these crazy stories we've been hearing about). However on the other hand, if you start firing people (mind you, rightfully so) That system would collapse one way or the other

Unfortunately, with the state of society as it is, they just might need to have training for this. Think of how people would rather video violence than to call for help, then upload to social media. I recall one case where teenagers recorded a stabbing. Society has become cold.

They usually only get moved to a new county because they're so understaffed. "Fired" highly doubt they'll stay fired in the entire state. Nobody checks and balances dcfs, they're practically a private entity that only the bottom level of society have to deal with, suffer from.

66 now but when i was 23 i worked as a waitress. Girl i knew from high school came in with man and child. Lil girl aged 4, sat with hands in her lap, very quiet. Adults ordered food and ate but nothing for the child. I wanted to ask if i could take her home with me. Less than a week later child was killed by mom and same man, not babys dad. Both went for long prison stints, but i carried quilt for years for not asking if i could take her home. I new deep down something wasnt right and since i was on friendly terms with the mom back in high school i still think she would of left her with me. These poor babies all deserved so much better.

I have a autistic child and his mother let her friend beat on him so one morning he waited and set the bed on fire with her friend in the bed When I got there the police was there and her friend was shaking so bad she couldn't talk. I ended up getting custody of him afterwards

But I’m old school & American & raised in a Military Family, thus my Parents were not lazy & would use certain justifiable force to punish. The pay rate for these workers are horrible and the caseloads are overwhelming. So they hire people who are uneducated and willing to accept the pay to be overworked. Therefore you have people who are not really there to resolve the problem, just there for the pay check. CPS/DHS in many states don't really supply the resources and services to truly protect the children. I've seen it when I was a child and now as a mandated reporter. I've had Social workers abandon a Child at the hospital because they didn't want to handle the case. I literally had to call The State on The State.

I know one child protect services bum (a family member) who was too lazy to do her work so she issued a “Home Daycare License” to a Registered Sexual Offender! All she had to do was look up their name on the registry! That was all she had to do! A teacher called Child Services to report two brothers were being BEATEN! The worker/bum kept “forgetting” to do anything so the teacher called the police. By the way, they BOTH KEPT THEIR JOBS!

Please get rid of DFACS. There are so many horror stories about them in Georgia. Many are incompetent, undereducated. and simply don’t care. So many stories of their incompetence. Start a new agency that listens to the complaints. So many are just non caring and lazy. A really good set up from bottom up could be envisioned and implemented. And judges in Georgia also need to be investigated as many lawyers have said judges don’t want to hear abt assault (especially sexual assault) so lawyers won’t bring up complaints. Unbelievable but it is true.

How many times have we seen this happen. Social workers see signs of abuse and dismiss it or even worse classify it as corporal punishment and let it go. One lady said the social worker told her mother how to not leave bruises. Children lose their lives at the hands of abusive parents and guardians when social services should have intervened.

I worked for an agency that was contracted out by DHS. I remember having several cases where the DHS caseworker either told me not to put certain things in my notes and not to report serious allegations to my bc they would handle it. They instead closed the case. They NEVER addresed serious allegations of s3xual abuse of 9 and 2 year olds in different cases, even when there were doctors notes on the charts. I definitely gave the information to my supervisor for her to do with it whatever she could and I literally had to stop working in children and youth and began working with senior citizens because it was way too hard watching thilose innocen babies suffer. Those people don't care at all. And it was our own people. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😡😡😡

For the record every single thing a social worker wants to do has to be approved by the supervisor. In Massachusetts if you remove a child from a home that family has 72 hours to go to court and the judge decides if the child should be removed or given back. It’s not just the social worker. They don’t make the final call.

It lies within its own ranks because the agency is overworked and understaffed. I’ve been doing social work for two years now, it needs a major overhaul! In my state alone, a state worker manages 60 children. How in gods name can one person manage 60 kids in 60 different homes? I’m not excusing the states failure either. We need more resources, way to stop the high turn over rate, and attractive pay to keep said workers.

@@dasiahb.7541it’s already easy. You need a degree in AA or BSW. Most states don’t require a social work license. The issue is the high turnover rate. I just left a job interview (social worker for disabled adults) where the lady said I’d be working 80 hours a week. Who the hell wants to work that?

Why in the world would anyone who actually cares about kids work for DFS, they do nothing but harm to kids. The good ones always get out!! This is absolutely uncalled for and happens all too often! 😡

Yes, it's incompetence, negligence, disregard, laziness and lack of compassion in reference to the worker and the supervisor, but let's address the manager and the director. We don't have to stop there, what about the state? Present all the stats, like how many families on her caseload, how many high-risk/ critical need families assigned, did she have a tech to assist and what was the turn around time for documentation? Don't put those women on front street, while everyone else sit on the porch! Accountability has no limits😞!!! What I really find appalling is that she continued to report to work knowing she would never be effective or successful 🙏!

@@andreiasilva7994Thanks. Seems like I've heard a similar story. An African man bringing his daughter from her Homeland, he remarried and the child ended up deceased.😢 Seems like some form of retaliation....or ritual.

I keep telling y’all CPS don’t protect the children who need help but they love taking children from homes where they are loved all because the parents aren’t living the way they government says they should. Too many actual parents will allow stepparents to continue abuse because it’s easier than actually parenting alone. This baby suffered and I hear a lot of people calling their children evil, bad or demonic when it’s not the case after all. I reported that my stepson was being abused by his biological mother and they closed the case within 48 hours without even talking to me despite me making them aware that I had proof. It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve seen him but I know that god is watching over him.

They need too be treated the same way. The workers need too go too jailed. The Father is at fault for not protecting his child. It was not the childs fault that her dad had a affair .Why didn't she beat her husband instead of the child. If they didn't want her a family member or someone would have taken. The only ones that had the devil in them is the two Adults. Put in jail for the rest of their lives they will be among alot of devil.

Wasn't the child being born out of wedlock his own fault?! He let his demonic wife unalive that baby because he wanted her gone too. The child welfare workers should go to jail too, this child was failed by all the adults in her life.

I’m surprised these people were fired. I have seen quite a few stories about children that have had open case files going back years who end up dead because of the inaction by their case workers or because the case workers will place children back with the same abusive parents who lost custody of their children to begin with. Look at poor Harmony Montgomery, taken from a loving foster family who wanted to adopt her along with her baby brother and given to two worthless junkies. The Child Protective Services, Department of Family Services are always dropping the ball and despite the enormous number of dead children and babies nothing ever changes. Ever!

Send the social workers too jail for 30 years .Maybe other workers will start doing their jobs. They are supposed too protect the children that is their job.

A "smart" social worker would quit the profession. Working with kids under age 18 is dangerous. Something happens to the kid and you risk going to prison. Get out of the profession while you can.
