What is the difference with all these brands? There's Folk Art Glass Etching Cream, Etchall, Armour Etch and more.
I tried 4 different brands of glass etching cream - ones that you can find at your local craft supply store, ones from the hardware store and ones you can only find online.
Check out this video to find out which one is the best, which ones suck and check out how easy it is to make cool drinkware with stencils and glass etching cream!

Thanks for making this video! Folk art was the only one available at my store and I thought I got a bad batch because it was so thick. Was so upset until I saw your video. Craft game back on!

Thank you so much for making this video, price was a factor for me as was availability. Few people mention that when reviewing products. Very informative, clear and concise!

I've been etching with Armour Etch for 25 yrs. LOVE IT. I put a good even heavy coat on, wait a few minutes and wash off with warm/ hot water then clean as usually. I've left it on a few minutes to an hour. NO difference in shade. I always lay my glasses down to help make sure no shadow.

Hello, Thank you for this great comparison video. I bought the Etchall brand about a year ago. Last week I finally used it. The cream had turned brown. I decided to use it. My project came out great. I noticed as the day went on the frost appeared more prominent.

Thanks for this! I just bought the Folk Art because it was the only one available locally in store. I am going to use it tonight and your video makes me feel better about the product.

Yeah! I was surprised. The reviews of Folk Art Glass Etching Cream aren't great but I liked it better than the other brands. It was slightly thicker and easy to see. My only advice is to always leave glass etching cream on longer than the package instructions.

@@PopshopamericaForever yeah I was a little worried from the reviews but it worked out great! Like you said, leave it on a little longer than it says and continue to go back and move the etching cream around. Thanks again for the video!

I've never tried glass etching until today and I bought the Folk Art creme. I wasn't very impressed, but maybe I did it wrong which is what lead me to finding this video. I used a Folk Art sponge dabber and left it on for 15 minutes. I didn't move it around half way through because the instructions didn't say to do that. It's streaky and not very even looking. So after watching this video, I'm going to try it again and see if it works any better.

Yeah - it's funny what they DON'T tell you on the label! I learned the swirling method through trial and error and making many early projects with streaks. If you consider ever project an experiment and try something new, you can learn a lot! XOXO

Thanks for your great video! Question: Slightly off topic... I have a pair of American Optical Non Polarized Sunglasses that have real glass lenses and are are really badly scratched. I have seen several videos of people using glass etching cream to remove scratches from EYE GLASSES. Will this work on sunglasses with glass lenses? I bought the Folk Art Etching Cream, Any advice?

I have also heard of people doing this but never tried it! Perhaps this is helpful? lifehacker.com/armor-etch-removes-scratched-coating-from-glasses-5138438 If there is a way to test one tiny part of the glasses that would be helpful.

Hi..is using a popsicle stick to apply the FolkArt better than using a brush ? I used a brush and I left it on for 15 mins (at 7 mins i dabbed again like in ur video ) , rinsed it and it still left a few streaks . What do u recommend? Thank u
@PopshopamericaForever
@PopshopamericaForever 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "streaks" I don't see a way that frosted glass could have streaks unless you mean striations of the pattern that did not etch. If that is the case, the cream was not applied evenly and left air bubbles. You can use a popsicle stick but a brush, q-tip, paper towel - really anything like that should work. Let me know your thoughts and we'll figure this out!! ✨

Thank you for this tutorial. I wanted to try my hand at etching glass, and I found myself at Michael's. They only had two bottles of etch cream. One was Folk Art, and the other was Armour. I bought FA, because it was 2 bucks cheaper despite the fact that all of the tutorials I've seen use Armour. After watching this video, I'm feeling better about my purchase.

I've been etching for a few years now and I predominantly use Armour Etch. However, I find that it has A LOT of crystals in the cream and if left on the glass, it will not etch the glass. When time permits, I will strain the cream to remove the crystals. Very messy! I have seen the Folk Art etching cream and Etchall, so I am not excited to try them after watching this video. I have a big job coming my way and I'm tired of the hit or miss with Armour Etch. Thank you for your demo!

@sandraoguynn the crystals form when the etcher gets cold. Etching cream is also known as honey cream because just like honey, when you heat it up, the crystals dissolve. Put a bottle in a warm bath for a few hours. I start with tap water as hot as it will go and fill a pot so that the bottles are half to 3/4 submerged in water. I put it on my stove. Every half hour I turn the burner on LO to rewarm the water for about 10 minutes and then shut the stove off again. DO NOT let the water boil. You just want really warm water that doesn't burn you. Shake the bottle every 30 minutes. I find it takes about 3 hrs for 10oz and 5 to 6 hrs with a 22oz bottle to get rid of the crystals. Shake or stir twice an hour until it's nice and smooth. This method also works for etcher that's hardened in the bottle to loosen it up. Also, if the etcher is beige or brown, it's because it got too hot (usually during shipping). It doesn't affect how the etcher works:)

Hi interesting film, I recently changed from using Armour Etch to Etchall cream, Etchall Cream is re usable they say?
@PopshopamericaForever
@PopshopamericaForever Жыл бұрын
You can try to reuse the cream, but in my experience it's NOT reusable because as it cures on the glass for 10 minutes, it begins to dry. Additionally, it's impossible to get the cream off in a way that you can reuse it. For example, I remove etching cream by running it under water. To reuse it, you could likely need to use a popsicle stick or some kind of spoon or scoop...It doesn't seem feasible.

Where do I purchase the correct type of stencils to use?
@PopshopamericaForever
@PopshopamericaForever 3 жыл бұрын
The best thing to use are sticker stencils. You can get them anywhere - craft supply stores, hobby stores, online. There is a WHOLE WORLD of different stencils - alphabet stencils, flowers, plants, and everything under the sun!

You should also etch a large area with each and compare how consistent the etching is. Using armour etch, we had inconsistent etching. Now we go over it in different directions with fresh etching cream. I wonder how the others would fare for larger areas? Less TLC to get full etching? Longer vs. shorter etching time results?

@@PopshopamericaForever Haha. It is 30+ minutes long! I skipped to the conclusion part and then jumped around some to find the juicy bits. I actually did watch and list to the significant parts. I just really want to know if one really etches deep and consistent compared to armour etch. We have about 4 rounds of etched glasses under our belt, but still have not mastered it as it is not 100% consistent etch. I do like your video and you did a great job. Maybe have a TLDR section for those with limited time. Thanks!

@@markpeters1316 Armour etch (and other etching creams) aren’t made to go on areas larger than 1in x 1in (it’s all over their website, instructions, troubleshooting etc.) You’ll always get inconsistent results using them that way, which is why they say for anything large, sandblasting is the way to go, not etching cream (plus sandblasting is cheaper in the long run)
