Choosing the best CPU cooler for ITX PC's usually boils down to a question of air cooling vs water cooling. But in this video I wanted to find out how the best ULTRA low profile CPU coolers under 47mm end up performing at 65W and 95W. Are these really worth buying for an air cooled ITX PC or do you need to search for something bigger?

Love the SFF focus. Would really like to see LGA1700 / 12th gen on low profile coolers (sub 50mm). Using any technique possible to make it run, be that PL2 limits, undervolting, duct-ing, using 25mm fan on L9i, etc. Just want to see which coolers are able to handle 12600k / 12700k the best and at what power draw.. I have a Dr. Zaber Sentry 2.0 with a 12600K. Currently using an NH-L9i 1700 for a cooler with the Noctua duct kit. It just BARELY keeps up under full synthetic load with stock settings. Low to mid 90s for temps, BUT it is stable there without climbing any higher. Gonna try some undervolting and see what that does. Also have a few more coolers on the way to try. Biggest headache with LGA1700 is getting a cooler that fits these motherboard options.

Honestly, I've spent a lot of time trying to optimise things and the only real thing that had an appreciable affect was changing my Big Shuriken 3's fan to a full size NF-P12 fan. At this stage I already had all of my other fan slots filled on my NR200 (NF-A12s on the bottom, A12x25s on top as exhaust). I found that even stuff like fan profiles didn't lead any appreciable improvement, but having stronger fans on top as exhaust helps GPU temps significantly (intake not so much).

Those low profile coolers benefits the best in sandwich layouts cases like the DAN A4 or the Louqe ghost S1. Also, Noctua makes some a foam gaskets for the NH-L9a which concentrates the direction of airflow better into heat sink better. I've saw a drop in about 7C when using this in My DAN A4 with a 3600x cpu. This also allows me to run that fan a little slower to reduce acoustics. I highly recommend using those gaskets where the NH-L9a is closer to the side panels of the case.

Love the high effort testing, but a lot of these coolers are set-up without their optimal configs - usually most of the coolers with 92mm fans are swapped for a9x14s, since we want optimal heatsink performance with the best noise normalized fan. Stuff like the is47k should be set up in intake instead of exhaust with a Noctua L9 backplate / bracket (10c+ drop over stock, depending on QC, and even then some units have concave coldplates), or replaced with a Black Ridge v2 entirely. Hidden gems like the Z39 ($10-15) are used instead of the is30/l9a to reduce the effects of side panel vent turbulence etc with the fan also in intake, for a lot better noise-normalised thermals. Here's a list of all the coolers that are usually best in class for most cases, from a few years of data in the SFFPC discord: 36mm: axp90x36 w/ a9x14 swap 39mm: z39 w/ a9x14 intake swap 45mm: bent Black Ridge v2 w/ a9x14 47mm: axp90x47 FULL Copper w/ a9x14 OR C7G w/ a9x14 OR: Black Ridge v2 w/ a9x14 intake for better noise with turbulent side panels 47mm w/ VLP ram: Black Ridge + p12 slim / a12x15 53mm: axp90x53 FULL Copper w/ a9x14 58mm: axp100 (58mm) Copper w/ ty100bp 65mm: L12 Ghost Edition w/ a12x15 swapped (or nfb9 kept, small diff) OR: axp100 65mm ty100bp / Big Shuriken 3 w/ scythe KFS for better RAM compatibility (or p12 slim swapped onto the BS3 for reduced cooling but better noise normalised) 66mm: L12s bent down (for use in Ghost S1, Formula X1 etc) OR: axp120x67 w/ a12x15 70mm: L12S w/ a12x15 Anything Higher than 70mm but lower than tower: C14S

@@HardwareCanucks This is true to a certain extent, but some of the coolers (z39, is47k etc) on here are relatively cheap even with an a9x14's cost added on (staying cheaper than say a L9a or AXP90CU respectively, even the 47k with the noctua backplate), and performing a lot better than the "better" cooler's stock configs for acceptable noise levels - mainly due to some brands' 9015 fans being pretty horrible, ID cooling etc in paticular. One cooler you didn't add, which is ridiculously short and able to fit into 1u chassis is the CNPS2X from Zalman. They are normally very cheap, around $15. Some users on r/sffpc have done testing in the past and adding a 25mm thick fan on the L9a/L9i actually does not provide any additional benefit. I'm so glad you made this video. I needed a good list of small coolers for my laptop. My OMEN 15's 80w 10750h and 100w 3070, overload the small cooler. The cover on the bottom has grating along the bottom above the heat pipes. So I am cutting a square out, so I can use some thermal pads to put a cooler on them. Even a little bit of help will go a long way. I have a laptop stand that will already work perfect for this. And I don't move my laptop much from my living room. It's connected to the TV. So I figure the rare occurrence of me wanting to move the laptop around or out of the house, wont be much of an issue. The laptop will literally just be sitting on top of the cooler, so just a simple tilt and lift should get it up without ruining the thermal pad I'll be using. Again, thank you guys for doing this video. Saved me some hunting. I'm going with the IS-47k, since the fan is between the cold plate and heat sink. As long as I can get around the same temps I get now, with less noise than the fans in the laptop. I think setting the fan speed of the laptop's fans to decent sound level, along with the IS-47k at a similar level, will make the gaming experience on my OMEN so much better. While still making it portable enough.

I hope you can include the Thermalright AXP120-X67 and the new revision Scythe Big Shuriken 3 Rev. B for the low profile cooler roundup. They're both 67mm tall and will match up against low profile mode on NH-L12S. It would be also interesting to test both with Nidec Gentle Typhoon or NF-A12x25's. Both coolers should be able to fit the Meshlicious with standard thickness fans whereas NH-L12S is only good for low profile mode with stock 15mm thickness fan.

I’ve got both the noctua and isk47. The isk47 outperforms the noctua on my 5700G in all tests…. But I use a noctua fan and turned it into a down draft, rather than up draft. The heat sink is just better than the noctua. So it’s a little more expensive since you gotta buy a noctua fan, but it performs well if you are willing to mix and match.

Your frustration with Cooler Master's kit is what many of us had felt for years. I found the installation process of the Hyper 212 Black RGB Edition to be a PITA and doesn't give you any hints at when you're too tight when screwing down the heatsink. The GP200 was almost as bad but the performance was absolute garbage for me.

I'd like to mention 2 things: 1- I understand there were height restrictions for this video but the IS-47K would perform a lot better with the fan on the top. I hope we can see that results in the next video. 2- In the NR200 all coolers would perform better with a fan on side bracket feeding fresh air from the outside. This has been tested by Machines & More and Optimum Tech. Anyway this was a great video.
@HardwareCanucks

Completely understand. Honestly though if you are going to ful the fan, it becomes higher, thus defeating the purpose of a truly low profile heatsink. At that point you may as well go for a higher 62mm heatsink that's gonna net better performance right out of the box....

Nice review. IMO these are fine for 65w parts. I did upgrade from my C7 that worked floorless on my Intel 4000s and 6000s series. Had to give it up when I went AMD 5000, as my first 5600x would have needed an upgrade fitting kit, and it died and I ended up with getting a 5800x instead. Won't stress out the C7 on such an OP CPU as it seems to overheat some tower coolers. But anything under that and I have no regrets on the C7.

Not familiar with the other coolers, but L9a is definitely not easy to install, especially not on an assembled system. You need three hands to do it comfortably: one to attach the cooler from the front, one to hold the backplate front the back, and one to insert the screws. Oh, and also you need two heads to monitor the whole process, one in the front to make sure the cooler is aligned, and one in the back to make sure the backplate and screws are aligned.
