The whole segment with Polyphemos relies on an ancient greek law; the law of xenia, or hospitality. This law was so important that it was overseen by Zeus himself - as in, those who violated it would be punished by Zeus and basically boiled down to "dont hurt, maim, or kill your guests so help me" and would in part be 'signed' by sharing a meal between host and guest; eat the food, you've entered the contract, and now xenia protects you both. Now, my only source for what I'm about to say is a translation of the Odyssey I read so I can't vouch for the accuracy, but according to xenia, those who requested your hospitality were to be lodged and fed for three days before the host could ask them their name or business. Strike one against Polyphemos, who asks this question right out the gate. Then there's the concept of guest gifts - as part of hospitality being exchanged, host and guest would exchange gifts upon their meeting, usually something valuable. Strike two against Polyphemos, who decides his guest gift to Odysseus will be eating him last which. Is not a guest gift due to the very spirit of xenia. Obviously. (Side note; this is also the crux of the Underworld, where if you eat the food, you're Hades's guest - which means you never leave) Anyway while us modern folk would think Polyphemos justified in demanding who tf is up in his house killing his animals and threatening violence, by ancient greek standards this made him a thug, and notably a bad host deserving of some eye-poking. (Oops this got long- But I felt context adds another layer to the song so here it is uwu) (Also, in the translation I read, Poseidon visits Polyphemos after the ordeal while Odysseus is on the raft sailing away from [spoilers] and once he learns what a terrbile host his son was he essentially drops his grudge which is. Fair, I guess. If a bit late lmao)

@@LoreCatan That's because Polyphemus prayed to Poseidon and told him what happened. Poseidon is a god and can hear prayers in his name. At least that's how the story goes. After Polyphemus prayed to and sobbed to his father, Poseidon went off to kill the man who mutilated his son. He didn't stop to wonder if Polyphemus deserved it. Which is fair. That's a fucking horrible comparison. How is finding sheep you thought were wild and killing them to eat, only for them to have an owner who was eventually going to eat them, you offer barrels of wine as compensation and the owner accepts just to decide to kill and eat you a viable comparison to that. the only way such a comparison would be even close is if you 1. are living out in the woods or a cave instead of a house 2. were going to eat the dog yourself 3. they offered you a few bottles of expensive wine and 4. you decided to eat the person who did it after accepting the wine.

@@gun506 in Greece wine was pretty common, so basically Odysseus killed his livestock (or pet in Polyphemus's eyes), and offered him a cheap can of beer as compensation, and there is no way Odysseuys thought they were wild because they were in a cave filled with food and supplies
@gun506
@gun506 5 күн бұрын
@@notavegan3 He literally has the line right after they killed it about how all these sheep gathered is too good to be true and they are in a dark cave, even if there were other supplies or food in there they clearly didn't see it or notice it until after they already killed them. We have easy access to wine as well does that automatically make a bottle of expensive wine equal to a cheap can of beer? I'm placing this comment on Casper's video too, but a little Greek insight to Remember Them. In Greek belief, for someone to pass over the River Styx and make it to the Underworld, they have to pay the Ferryman, Charon. That payment is typically buried with their body. There wasn't time to bury the fallen men. Odysseus knew his men and Polites would have no afterlife. He knew there was nothing he could do, except.. Remember Them.

8:39 one thing I haven’t heard anyone mention is that, in the context of raising animals, “favorite” means some combination of “this is the best one I have” and “this is the one I breed the most from” and “this is the First one I ever got” AND “this is my pet”. Basically, Odysseus and crew killed Polyphemus’ Starter Pokemon. Just to make the Cyclopses response make more sense emotionally. That was something it took me about fifty listens to realize myself. Even knowing it had to be coming from the first few lines he has due to general genre awareness, that first named character casualty hits like a ton of bricks. It just goes to show what an incredible job the music and the art do together to pull you into these people's stories and make you care about them even if you know it's gonna sting. side note: As someone with a background in raising herd animals(never had sheep myself but I had friends and neighbors who did, while I grew up around my mother's horses, and my brother and I raised goats, which are kind of similar to sheep but more independent and sassy) you really do reach a point, very quickly, where they are individuals to you and also your babies, and you will fight any and all threats to their safety, up to and including god, with your teeth and fists if that's all that's handy. So while I don't agree with his methods, I 100% understand where Polyphemus is coming from in this saga, and it's not so much cyclops behavior as it is average farmer/shepherd behavior. That's just how it is. You defend your flock or herd to the best of your ability, because they need you and they trust you. To be fair, at this point, that's what Odysseus is doing, too.

OMG Gigi is going to upload her Monster animation!! must have it in your reaction of the underworld said he was going to connect it with his animation of The Horse and the Infant! By the way, I'm loving these new collaborative reactions. It's great to see you being able to contribute new information now that you're involved in the fandom and Casper's reactions are so genuine and destroyed haha

By ancient Greek standards Polyphemus's violations were even more egregious, with him in the wrong and violating xenia from the beginning. But by modern standards he was still in the wrong after he accepted the wine. Odysseus stated the terms for him receiving the wine were them leaving alive. By drinking the wine he accepted those terms, only to immediately change them and decide he was going to kill all of them. That makes him a thief as well as a murderer, using the personal injury he received as justification. To remain sympathetic and on the right side of things morally he would have had to decline the wine and refuse the terms, citing the fact they weren't enough compensation.

19:22 I don't think that's it. I think he was insulted by the trade, overhyped wine for his favorite pet, so he decided to punish Odysseus further, echoing his father.

Yeah I think that's where he was coming from too. Interesting to me though, by drinking it without expressing that sentiment, he lost the moral high ground. Drinking it meant he accepted the terms, and then went back on them. If he had refused the wine then by some modern standards he would have been in the right to take at least Odysseus' life in exchange for the harm done to him, but because he drank that wine he became in the wrong.

@@feistsorcerer2251 @sora9138 had something interesting to say assuming they're right. My interpretation could be completely wrong at least for the actual Odyssey, I might still be right for the musical.

@@somedudewatchintv5297 Yeah they have a really good comment from an Odyssey and Greek history standpoint. I wonder if Jay has elaborated about that moment wrt Epic in any of his behind the scenes stuff, because I still think your interpretation holds a lot of merit for the tone of things in Epic.

one thing that kinda broke me when I started watch the fan animations is the parallel scene in mircsy's Warrior of the mind were they are fighting the boar and Odysseus is able to save Polites from the changing boar vs Survive where the scene is setup the same but Odysseus cant save Polites from the cyclop's club

The thing is, Poisidon is also known as the father of monsters which is why the character design for the cyclops is so cool and why the coming chaos is soo good.

When offering the wine you can tell from the animation that everyone knows there’s a trick being made. But what I really love is that you can almost tell from the singing as well, that it’s not just a desperate attempt to trade for their lives but he’s also hiding something. Or maybe my mind is playing tricks due to knowing the story. Though I’ve often felt like I’m better at understanding tone than body language.

24:26 I also perceived this as the infant being a (potential) future enemy that is the son of a present enemy and the cyclops being a present enemy who’s the son of a future enemy.

I just realized something. In Polyphemus, Odysseus says "Why would the lotus eaters pass up on all this food" as if there's no possibility that they just prefer Lotus because they've been mind controlled by it.
