80$ seems fine. My concern with kit like that isn't "will it do the job" but rather "will it hurt me"
@Tristoo
@Tristoo 2 жыл бұрын
you can grab the tungsten with one hand and the clamp with the other, and nothing will happen to you. open circuit voltage for stick/tig is usually 30v or less DC, it couldn't hurt you if it were a living thing consciously trying it's hardest. hf start might do something but usually far too low current, and the high frequency will have skin effect anyway, so even though it might burn you, it's unlikely it will kill you. obviously don't try it, but things don't just up and kill you like that. if it's metal enclosure is not properly connected to ground and a live wire on the high voltage side is touching it it would be dangerous, but the same applies to your washing machine and microwave. easy to check too, but you'd already know how to if you were that paranoid.

Lmao, what world do you live in that you think the 80 dollar unit is a 1 time use and disposable. 1: meant for at home use, by the diy guy, used sparingly but if done properly and stored properly will last a few years. Not meant for very big projects. 2: meant to be used for hours on end every single day for a decade by professionals. Meant for heavier duty welds and for very large commercial projects. Comparing the two is like comparing a 50cc chinese scooter to a brand new honda goldwing. Yeah, you can take both to the corner store down the street. But you won't want the scooter for a cross country road trip.

@BigWheel.
@BigWheel. Жыл бұрын
Practicality is variable in this field. That portability means nothing if you weld in one location all day. Or if you have a shop and run a full cart. And the duty cycle of the larger welder means nothing if all you need is to tack a fence post back together. Different tools Different uses. Same reason my $5 harbor freight 1/4 ratchet is "just as good" as my expensive half inch matco ratchet. I use them for different purposes and they do their respective jobs very well.

So, I actually did this test when I was working in a shop. The shop welder was a watercooled Miller Dynasty 400 and my foreman brought in his $500 Yes Welder ACDC and we hooked up an extra water cooled torch and circulator to it. We used a certified clamp meter to measure amperage and the Miller at 150 amps had +/- 0.1 amps variance. The Yes Welder at same settings had +/- up to 10 amps but mostly on the minus. Both machines were connected on 50 Amp breakers at 240v.

It all depends on the application. For a diy job at home, the $80 machine will work just fine. For any fanufacturing heavy or light, the $80 machine will fail due to the limited duty cycle and also limited amps. I'd also say that the $80 machine is scratch start which is the least faviourte of most welders.

Last time I ran a bead was 30 years ago. Used a Lincoln arc welder to fabricate custom motor mounts for an F-150. I have no idea how wire feeds work.

One is cold welding, mostly for superficial welds, that aren't structurally important. The other will actually offer rigidity and strength.

It's not about how a weld looks from the top depth of the weld is what makes it strong. They need to cut along the weld and see which one is deeper.

Biggest difference is the duty cycle, the little machine could probably only wrong a couple minutes if that and then would need a while to cool off, while the other one could run forever
